Leslie Odom Jr. to reprise his Tony-winning role in 'Hamilton' this fall
Odom, who played Aaron Burr opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda 's Alexander Hamilton, will return to his Tony Award-winning role at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Sept. 9 through Nov. 23.
'I was born on the stage of the Richard Rodgers in so many ways. It gave me life in a way," he tells The Associated Press. 'I'm really looking forward to it.'
Odom and Miranda both left the show in July 2016 after the same performance. Odom had been with 'Hamilton' since it first began performances in early 2015 off-Broadway.
'I look back on it fondly, I do,' he says. 'It was the start of so much for me. It was the start of a career that I always dreamed of. It's just the beginning. It's the genesis.'
He estimates he played Burr some 500 times, but it never got boring: 'It still had revelation for me, and it still gave me reason to look a little deeper and focus a little harder.'
When he returns, he'll be with a new company of actors and will bring to the audience his willingness to discover in the moment, something he says he learned doing 'Hamilton.'
'I want them to see something exciting and alive. And the best way for me to do that is to be open and present in that moment,' he adds.
Odom earned another Tony nomination last year for the comedy 'Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch' by Ossie Davis.
After 'Hamilton,' he was on the big screen in 'Glass Onion' with Daniel Craig and 'The Many Saints of Newark' with Alessandro Nivola, and portrayed Sam Cooke in 'One Night in Miami.'
He lent his voice to the animated series 'Central Park' and starred opposite Kate Hudson in Sia's 'Music. ' His TV credits include 'Abbott Elementary' and 'Blue's Clues & You.'
Odom, who studied at Carnegie Mellon University, became the youngest cast member in the Broadway company of ' Rent.' Before 'Hamilton,' he appeared on TV in the series 'Smash' and 'CSI: Miami,' in the film 'Red Tails' and on Broadway in 'Leap of Faith.'
During the pandemic, Disney+ broadcast a filmed version of the original Broadway cast of 'Hamilton,' who Miranda has called 'an incredible '28 Yankees of actors'.
The Broadway show won 11 Tony Awards, including best new musical, best book and best score. The cast album has been a blockbuster, and the show has toured to packed houses.
The musical charts the rise and fall of statesman Hamilton and stresses his orphan, immigrant roots — 'Immigrants. We get the job done!' is one line that gets huge applause — as well as his almost Greek tragedy of a fall, fed by ambition.
Based on a biography by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Chernow and developed during the presidency of the first Black president, the show was optimistic and ambitious, tweaking Broadway traditions but respecting them, too. Odom says he's rereading Chernow's biography to get ready.
Many in the cast alongside Odom were relatively unknown to the wider world when they hit the stage: Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos and Phillipa Soo. Even Miranda wasn't yet a brand name.
Odom, who shoots Hamilton dead, sang on many of the musical's best songs, including ″Wait for It″ ″Dear Theodosia″ ″The Room Where It Happens″ and ″Your Obedient Servant.″
He says he often sings the songs during concerts but will have to relearn the score. 'One of the most important gifts that it gave me was this association with some recognizable tunes that people like to hear,' he says.

Hollywood icon shares concerning update from hospital bed as he cancels event
Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2010, shared a heartbreaking health update from hospital after being diagnosed with a virus, forcing him to cancel on an event Hollywood legend Richard Dreyfuss has shared a shocking health update from his hospital bed, as he's forced to pull out of this year's SharkCon event on medical advice. The iconic actor played Matt Hooper in Stephen Spielberg 's three-time Oscar-winning film Jaws, which turns 50 this year. But the 77-year-old, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2010, was looking frail as he spoke in the video, which was shared on the SharkCon Instagram on Sunday. Explaining to fans that he was too ill to take the five-hour flight, he appeared visibly unwell as he addressed followers. He was wrapped up in a Jaws blanket as he spoke in to the camera. Richard said: "Hello fellow cons. I am very, very sorry to tell you that I've been diagnosed with, viral, er…What is it?" His wife, Svetlana Erokhin, spoke off-screen, confirming her husband had contracted viral bronchitis. After a few attempts, he managed to repeat his diagnosis before he continued. He explained: "I've been told by my doctors I cannot fly and I would have to fly five hours to get there. I'm terribly sorry because I had planned to be there [at SharkCon] and I had been looking forward to it, but I am unable to do so. "I don't want to get anyone else sick, and I don't want to get sicker myself. I feel terrible about not showing up and I feel worse about exposing you to this apparently very viral illness. "But there will be other times and I will make it my business to show up. I want to wish you all good luck and happiness and I want you all to feel very sorry for me, and very sorry for yourselves. "I'm in a lot of pain and that has to come first, my health. I feel very good about having the time and enough health." His wife added: "And such great fans!", with Richard agreeing: "And such great fans." She said: "We love you, we miss you all and we will see you soon." Richard added: "That's my wife saying that! She's right, she knows how to do this. So good luck, happy health, happy con–bye!" SharkCon organisers shared the video, with the caption: "A message from Richard Dreyfuss. All prepaid autographs and photo ops will be automatically refunded. It will take 5-10 business days, plus what your bank takes to process. We are sorry for any inconvenience. Thank you." The actor was inundated with messages of support from fans, with some sharing anecdotes about the Oscar winner. Sharon Stone wrote: "Honey, feel better. The world is not good without you, then come over and give me a hug." A fan added: "My buddy was a limousine driver in NYC and his company drove a lot of stars. He said most stars ignored you and were aloof but Richard Dreyfus was the best! Always chatting with the drivers and such a cool guy. They all loved him." Actor Jake Busey, son of Gary Busey, wrote: "F***! Well, hey Rick. DAD and I are sending you love and healing energy. This is only a small hurdle you will beat. So wild. We were just watching you and Roy in jaws 3 days ago. Get well soon and feel better fast !!" Rosie O'Donnell added simply: "I love u Richard [sic]." A fan typed: "He will always be one of the great actors of his time."

Fringe 2025 – Connecticut public school shows high cost of coming to Edinburgh
Fairfield Ludlowe High School students in Connecticut, USA, are gearing up for their last stateside performance of Pride and Prejudice – which will also double as their last fundraiser. The performance will take place on 17 July and afterwards the Drama Club is bringing a more limited cast to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in early August. The expense of bringing a show to Edinburgh is already well known to be considerable, and in the case of Fairfield Ludlowe it is definitely a determining factor in the number of students who will actually arrive in Scotland later this month. Only 14 out of an original cast of 42 will make the trip. All manner of fundraising has gone on to make the trip viable – (including Sohana's father, Mick, dressing up as Sandy Clause in the depths of winter to pose for photos on the beach with anyone who would pay). Mick Reed 'helping' with the fundraiser The school's fundraising page explains that the total cost of the trip will be around $100,000 with travel to London for two days and Edinburgh for 10, accommodation, venue rental, costumes and production expenses – including the hire of the performance space. But the school was determined the play would be part of Fringe 2025. Their fundraiser says: 'Being accepted to play the Edinburgh Fringe is beyond our dreams. We are proud to take a public school show to the largest and most influential arts festival in the world!' Send off show The send off show in the US next Friday will mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth with a party at Roger Ludlowe Middle School offering prizes which include Broadway tickets. There will be none of that booty to share when they arrive in Scotland, but performing the play is their way of marking an important date in the Austen history – and offering a tremendous life experience to their students. The show – Pride and Prejudice – is one to mark in your diary – and be quick to do so as there are only four performances on 1,2, 5 and 6 August at 9am. 'This isn't your grandmother's Austen! Bold, surprising, boisterous and timely, this Pride and Prejudice for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life. It is a bold, surprising, boisterous and timely production. 'Outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, but can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?! 'Bridgerton meets Upright Citizens Brigade meets Jane Austen. Join this cast of 14 High School students from Fairfield, Connecticut as they dance their way through the Regency marriage game.' Regency costume with a modern twist The Edinburgh Reporter spoke to teacher and director, Christy Newsom along with student, Sohana Reed, who plays Miss Bingley. Christy is originally from California then moved to New York where she worked as a professional actor. She explained that she wanted to start having a family and of course 'those two things don't always go hand in hand'. She then began working in theatre education and found that she got the same level of fulfilment from that side as she did from being on stage herself. She has taught at Fairfield Ludlow since 2019 where she said the school has 'the most supportive principal and admin. They are so pro arts and the school has been recognised on a state level through various award ceremonies. I'm just really proud of the growth in the department that we've had.' As to the show Christy explained that this is not the traditional Pride and Prejudice. She said: 'We've decided to do what we're lovingly calling the best of. We are combining the books and the BBC version and the Keira Knightley movie and modern sketch comedy. The kids are wearing full Regency garb but with Converse and drinking out of red Solo cups. There's music, there's dancing. It's definitely quirkier than your original Austen. Sohana explained her role, saying: 'Miss Bingley likes this one guy, Darcy, but Lizzie the main character – she and Darcy are falling in love and Miss Bingley can't do anything about it. She is mad all the time, constantly annoyed by life – and she hates the country!' And as for Sohana's preparation for Edinburgh – she is buying a waterproof. Don't miss their early morning performances. Pride and Prejudice – 1 – 6 August at 9am in The Great Hall at Nicolson Square Venues Watch our online interview here: Like this: Like Related
