Naismith, 38, was axed by Hearts - who McInnes will take charge of - in September and is thought he is keen on a return to the dugout.
The ex-Scotland international refused to rule himself out of the running for the Killie job.
But after being out of football for the first time in his life he insists he will take time to weigh up what he does next.
Asked about the links to the vacant hotseat on the latest episode of The Warm Up, William Hill SPFL's weekly preview show, Naismith said: 'I'll go serious for you and give you a good answer. I'm enjoying the time out.
'It takes over your life, management. It's on your mind all the time.
'I loved it but I've loved my time out. I'm at the point where everything needs to be perfect for me.
'So it has to be the right club, you believe in what it is and that you're going to make a difference. That's where I sit.'
SunSport told on Monday how Naismith would be a leading contender if McInnes left.
McInnes initially claimed he would be in the Killie dugout for the final two games of their season, despite the clubs agreeing he could move to the Jambos.
But he dramatically left his post this morning following Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Motherwell.
Derek McInnes spotted leaving Rugby Park for last time as Kilmarnock fans thank ex-manager
That has hastened Killie's chase for Naismith, who became a club hero after coming through the ranks then netting 32 goals in 105 appearances before being sold to Rangers in 2007 for a club record fee £1.9million.
He was a part of Steve Clarke's backroom team then took charge at Tynecastle on an interim basis in April 2023.
After landing the permanent post he guided them into third spot in his first full season in charge but was then axed just six games into this season with the club sitting at the foot of the table.
It's thought that experience hasn't put Naismith off the role. He has used his time out to further his education by going on club visits and speaking with managers he has worked with in the past, as well analysing things in various media roles.

In between getting married and a short holiday, it became evident his family made it clear they wanted to remain in Scotland with Tynecastle by far the preferred those 18 months, he has played under three different managers with Steven Naismith and Neil Critchley both shown the door with Liam Fox, who has also left the club, standing in as interim head coach in these cannot be overstated the influence Derek McInnes has had in making this deal happen. 'It's the toughest decision in my career'
Leaving Celtic was "the toughest decision" Greg Taylor has made in his career as the Scotland defender signs with Greek outfit Brendan Rodgers wanted to retain the 27-year-old's services despite agreeing in January the return of fellow Scotland defender Tierney once his contract ran out this summer with Taylor said it would be "unfair" to pin his international teammate's return as the reason he moved on, the left-back admits there were "a million things to weigh up"."It's probably the toughest decision I've had in my career, definitely," he told Sky Sports."When I left Kilmarnock back in 2019, it was that bit easier because I was progressing. I wanted to go and try and play for the biggest team in Scotland."I think at that time there wasn't many that believed I would play as many games as I did, but the one person that really did was myself. "I was lucky to go and play 200 plus games for Celtic, which was unbelievable."It wasn't easy. There were a million things to weigh up, but I just felt it was the right time to do it. I wanted to play regularly and that's probably the big factor."

James McClean makes telling admission on Wrexham and Ryan Reynolds' involvement
James McClean has reflected on Wrexham's meteoric rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, backing the club to defy doubters with a historic promotion push in the Championship Wrexham skipper James McClean has lifted the lid on how involved co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get in running the club. The Hollywood actors have transformed the Welsh side's fortunes since taking over more than four years ago. The Red Dragons have enjoyed three successive promotions under manager Phil Parkinson, taking them from the National League to the Championship. Former Republic of Ireland international McClean played a key role in their two most recent campaigns in League One and League Two. And the 36-year-old wing-back has praised Reynolds and McElhenney for resisting the temptation to interfere in playing matters. The pair are heavily involved in supporting the club in other ways, including boosting its profile through the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, providing players with advice and making savvy business deals to increase revenue. However, McClean believes that leaving key football decisions to Parkinson and his coaching staff has been a masterstroke by the two A-listers. He also spoke in glowing terms about his time at the club to date and how it has helped to prolong his career. "It's class and I've found a place where I'm appreciated," McClean told the Irish News. "People have got a lot of respect for me and when that's the case, obviously I'll go above and beyond to repay that. "It has given me a new lease to life, I'm enjoying my football and I feel like I can do this for a long time yet. Rob and Ryan are 100 per cent part of it, but they are very clever men. They are part of it to a certain extent. "They obviously don't get involved with team affairs, they leave that to the managers, but to have owners involved as they are in the right way, it's class. There are no words to describe the impact that they've had and the praise they deserve, because it's absolutely above and beyond." Wrexham are currently preparing to play in the Championship for the first time in 43 years. Parkinson has also brought in two new faces to help his side compete in the second tier, with Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward joining, and more expected to follow. While the manager is expected to be well-backed in the transfer market by Reynolds and McElhenney this summer, some pundits have already dismissed Wrexham's chances of pulling off an unprecedented fourth promotion in a row. But McClean was bullish when asked about the club's hopes of reaching the Premier League for the first time ever and warned people not to write them off. The ex-Sunderland and West Brom player said: "The rise of the club from where it was a few years ago to where it is now is great. We're on a roll at the minute, momentum is like a steam train, the buzz around the place is brilliant. "From our point of view, it's the same as every year. We'll go into the season with people telling us 'this can't be done' and 'that can't be done' and 'this is a step too far', but with Wrexham it's the old fairytale story and let's see how we get on." McClean added: "We we told two in a row would have been tough, three in a row would be impossible and four in a row is just non-existent and it won't happen. We've done the previous ones, so I wouldn't put it past us doing the unthinkable." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
