NEW DELHI: China is now adding 100 warheads to its nuclear arsenal every year, which is already more than three times India's stockpile. While India continues to maintain a slight edge over Pakistan, the recent cross-border military conflict between them risked escalating into a nuclear crisis, says a global arms watchdog.
China has 600 warheads, up from 500 in Jan 2024, while India has 180 and Pakistan 170, as per the latest assessment by the Stockholm International Peace Institute (SIPRI) released on Monday. Russia and the US, of course, are way ahead of others, together accounting for 90% of all nuclear weapons.
Taking note of
Operation Sindoor
launched by India against Pakistan on May 7, a senior SIPRI researcher said, "The combination of strikes on nuclear-related military infrastructure and third-party disinformation risked turning a conventional conflict into a nuclear crisis."
Indian officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, however, have stressed that the May 7-10 hostilities came nowhere close to either side contemplating the use of nuclear weapons.
India, however, did strike the Sargodha and Nur Khan air-bases, among others, in clear strategic messaging. The first is located near Pakistan's underground nuclear infrastructure and storage facilities at Kirana Hills, while the second is close to the headquarters of the Strategic Plans Division that oversees the country's nuclear arsenal.

The SIPRI researcher, on his part, said, "As the recent flare-up of hostilities in India and Pakistan amply demonstrated, nuclear weapons do not prevent conflict. They also come with immense risks of escalation and catastrophic miscalculation - particularly when disinformation is rife - and may end up making a country's population less safe, not more."
Overall, the SIPRI report said China's nuclear arsenal is growing faster than any other country and is likely to touch 1,500 warheads by 2035.
Both India and Pakistan continued to develop new types of nuclear weapon delivery systems in 2024, and are also pursuing the capability to deploy multiple warheads on ballistic missiles.
India has "slightly expanded" its nuclear arsenal from 172 warheads last year to 180 now, with its new "canisterised" missiles making it possible for them to carry mated nuclear warheads even during "peacetime", it added.
As reported by TOI earlier, the China-specific Agni-5 (strike range over 5,000 km) and the new-generation Agni-Prime (1,000-2,000 km) ballistic missiles, which are being inducted into the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), come in hermetically-sealed canisters.
The Agni-Prime will gradually replace the Agni-1 (700 km) and Agni-2 (2,000 km) missiles already in the SFC's arsenal.
With missiles with mated warheads in ready-to-fire configurations, the SFC gets the requisite operational flexibility to store them for long periods, swiftly transport them through rail or road when required, and fire from wherever they want. The Agni-5 was also tested with multiple warheads (MIRVs or multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles) for the first time in March last year.
The SIPRI report said Pakistan is developing its "nascent" nuclear triad of aircraft, ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles, and sea-launched cruise missiles like the Babur-3 being fitted on Agosta-90B diesel-electric submarines.
India, in turn, has a "maturing" nuclear triad, with two operational SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles) in INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, strengthening the naval leg of its nuclear triad. The third slightly larger SSBN will be commissioned as INS Aridhaman this year, as reported by TOI earlier.

India, China Review LAC Situation, Plan 'Special Representatives' Talks

New Delhi: India and China on Wednesday reviewed the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh and prepared the ground for the next edition of the Special Representatives' dialogue on the boundary question. The two sides discussed the issues at a meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) that took place in Delhi. They expressed "satisfaction with the "general prevalence of peace and tranquillity in the border areas, leading to gradual normalisation of bilateral relations", the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. It said India and China also prepared for the next round of the Special Representatives' (SR) talks to be held in India later this year. While India's Special Representative for the dialogue is National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, the Chinese side is headed by Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Wang is expected to visit India for the upcoming SR talks. The last episode of the SR dialogue was held in Beijing in December last year. On the WMCC talks, the MEA said the two sides reviewed the situation in the India-China border areas. They "agreed to maintain regular exchanges and contacts on issues related to the boundary affairs at the diplomatic and military levels through established mechanisms", it said in a statement. "With a view to advancing effective border management and sustaining peace and tranquillity, the two sides deliberated on various measures as explored during the previous 23rd round of SR talks," the MEA said. The Indian delegation at the WMCC talks was led by Gourangalal Das, the joint secretary (East Asia division) in the MEA. The Chinese side was headed by Hong Liang, the director general of the boundary and oceanic affairs department of the Chinese foreign ministry. Hong also called on Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Over the last nine months, India and China have been engaged in normalising their relations after ending the military face-off along the LAC in October last year. Though the two sides have disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. The WMCC talks took place days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited China to attend a conclave of the foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and a deadly clash in the Galwan valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Russian city of Kazan in October last year. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up the disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok.

PM Modi reaches UK; likely to seal FTA

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reached the UK with the formal signing of the landmark India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be the key outcome of his two-day trip. Modi will hold wide-ranging talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday. Starmer will host Modi at Chequers, the British prime minister's official country residence near London. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal is likely to sign the FTA alongside his UK counterpart Jonathan Reynolds after three years of intense negotiations. The UK views the deal as its biggest trade win since Brexit and hopes it will inject fresh momentum into research and technology partnerships with India. In 2023-24, bilateral trade between the two countries crossed $55 billion. The UK is India's sixth largest investor with $36 billion invested so far, while nearly 1,000 Indian companies in Britain employ around 1,00,000 people. Indian investments in the UK stand at close to $20 billion.

Farmers, oppn demand Kokate's resignation over string of controversies

Pune: Farmers' organisations and other social outfits, along with the opposition, have started mounting pressure on the state govt over Manikrao Kokate's resignation as agriculture minister. Protestors in some parts demanded his immediate sacking from the cabinet. After he was recently captured on video playing a game of cards when the assembly was in session, the minister landed in deeper controversy with his 'state govt is a beggar' remark on Tuesday sparking outrage among the farming community. Kokate, who represents Nashik's Sinnar assembly constituency, was responding to questions about his previous remarks that beggars do not accept Re 1 in alms but govt provides crop insurance for that amount. So who is the beggar here? Govt is a beggar, and not the farmer. My statement was misconstrued." President of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana Raju Shetti criticised govt for not dropping Kokate from the cabinet despite his controversial remarks. He said, "Nearly 20% farmers are not able to sow their fields and many more will have to spend more money on re-sowing due to inadequate rainfall. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like $30K Goes a Long Way in This Clementi Condo squarerooms Read More Undo Instead of providing relief to the distressed community, Kokate was playing an online game in the monsoon session. If he behaves irresponsibly, the chief minister and deputy chief ministers should take responsibility and remove him as agriculture minister." When the opposition targeted Kokate after his video surfaced on social media, he refused to resign and said he was ready to face an inquiry. While trying to clarify his position on Tuesday, the minister landed in more trouble when he said govt was a beggar. Welfare organisation Prahar's founder and former MLA Bachchu Kadu said, "This is probably the eighth or the ninth time that Kokate has made a controversial statement. It is quite shocking that he continues to be a minister. By calling govt a beggar, he has indirectly admitted that the state is facing a financial crisis. Either govt should respond to his statement or take action against him." Members of Maratha Kranti Morcha and NCP (SP)'s Pune unit demanded Kokate's resignation. Newly appointed NCP (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde said, "The farming community and the opposition want Kokate's resignation but he says he will not quit. It shows that the chief minister and deputy chief ministers have no control over their ministers." He added that when Congress-NCP was in govt, several ministers resigned on moral grounds after they faced allegations. "But, it looks like Mahayuti is starting a new trend of shielding its ministers," Shinde said.
