Las Vegas named as one of the best retirement towns for 2025… but it's not why you think
Unlike the blingy Nevada-based casino metropolis, Las Vegas, New Mexico, offers a much more quaint retirement experience. With a population under 13,000, this small town is steeped in history and surrounded by hundreds of miles of natural beauty.
It's home to more than 900 historic buildings, two national parks, golf courses, rivers for fishing, and plenty of bird-watching opportunities.
Typical home prices sit just above $300,000, making it an affordable option for those seeking a slower pace.
The weather is mild year-round, with the mercury rarely dipping below 12°F or rising above 91°F.
An Amtrak station and a nearby airport keep it connected to bigger cities, while local conveniences like Walmart, Love's Travel Stop, McDonald's, and Sonic provide everyday comfort.
Just 70 miles east of Santa Fe, Las Vegas, NM, has landed a spot on Travel + Leisure's top 50 places to retire in 2025.
'The Las Vegas area has become a popular place to retire and relocate in the later years of life, even if you are not completely retired,' a spokesperson for Las Vegas' Chamber of Commerce told DailyMail.com.
'The Las Vegas Area is rural and quiet. This makes it easy to just live life without any stress of city life but not far enough away from civilizations to still make it convenient.'
They also pointed out the city's vibrant arts and culture scene, which features several local musicians and galleries.
Instead of casinos and five-star hotels, locals can also spend time visiting the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge or the nearby Storrie Lake State Park.
It is also a good place for any older Americans with health concerns as there are 33 hospitals in San Miguel County.
But the town is not perfect: the nearby Gallinas River is the main supplier of water for residents.
The plant processing the water has struggled to keep up with residents' water demands since the Hermit's Peak and Calf Canyon fires destroyed thousands of nearby acres in 2022.
Las Vegas has issued several water advisories and ration warnings since the natural disaster.
The city is currently using federal relief aid to distribute water and find longer-term solutions to the availability crisis.
Other low-key retirement communities
Multiple towns across the US are bustling with newly minted retirees.
DailyMail.com put together a list of the 21 best retirement towns, taking weather patterns, housing costs, and amenities into account.
Florida, which has consistently drawn millions of new retirees each year, only had two towns that made the list.
The past year has also seen some surprising trends in retiree migration.
Last year, Mesa, Arizona took the top spot as the most popular destination for newly retired movers.
Florida kept its crown as the state attracting the most retirement-age residents, but Maine has the highest percentage of residents over 65.
For millions of Americans, the prospects of retirement have seemed to dwindle as the economy continues to struggle with a cost of living crisis.

'I have to ask the sheriff for special permission, because she's under 18. It sounds like a comedy sketch, but it's legit!' Stacey explained that she had to rent a trailer for Minnie to stay in with dad Kevin and that the little girl would watch out the window while she was filming. What to know about the earthquake that shook the New York area Saturday night
A relatively mild, 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the New York metropolitan area Saturday night. Here's what to know. What happened? The earthquake hit in the New Jersey suburb of Hasbrouck Heights at about 10:18 p.m. Eastern time at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers). It was felt fairly widely in northern parts of the state, southern New York and even in southern Connecticut. There were no initial reports of serious injuries or significant damage in New Jersey or across the Hudson River in New York City. City officials said that as of late Sunday morning they had not been called to respond to any building-related issues. The Big Apple has more than 1 million buildings. Many posts on social media reported the ground rumbling, and the U.S. Geological Survey reported more than 10,000 responses to its 'Did You Feel It?' website. Though people in the United States might associate earthquakes more often with the West Coast, scientists say these types of incidents on the East Coast are not unlikely. How frequent are earthquakes in the New York area? The area feels an earthquake about once every couple of years. 'The northeast part of the United States does not see large earthquakes very often,' said Jessica Turner, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center, which is a part of the USGS. Since 1950, only 43 other quakes of this magnitude and larger have occurred within 155 miles (250 kilometers) of Saturday's event, according to the USGS. A much larger, 4.8-magnitude quake that struck in Tewksbury, New Jersey, a little farther west of the city, in April 2024 was felt as far away as Boston and Baltimore. Some flights were diverted or delayed after that quake, and Amtrak slowed trains throughout the busy Northeast corridor. New York was damaged in 1737 and 1884 by earthquakes, according to USGS data. How do East Coast earthquakes compare with West Coast ones? The difference between East Coast and West Coast quakes lies in the 'mechanism,' said seismologist Lucy Jones. California is at the edge of the San Andreas fault system, which has two tectonic plates: the Pacific Ocean plate and the North American plate. Two plates move and push to build up stress, meaning earthquakes happen relatively frequently. New York falls in the middle of a plate, far from the nearest boundaries in the center of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea — resulting in residual stresses and making it difficult to predict where earthquakes will occur. The area is also home to the well-known Ramapo Fault line. Geologists have not seen evidence that would suggest it has had a large earthquake in some time, but there have been smaller ones. Saturday's quake cannot necessarily be associated with this fault, experts say. The same size earthquake is felt over a much larger area in New York than it would be in California. 'The rocks on the East Coast are particularly cold and hard and therefore, do a better job of transmitting the energy,' said Jones. In California, the various faults are more akin to a broken bell, which doesn't transmit energy as well. Does this signal more to come? Every earthquake makes another one more likely, but within a range, scientists say. 'At just 3.0, the chances are there will not be another felt event,' Jones said, estimating about a 50-50 chance there will be no activity that can be recorded. I had a butt injection in Los Angeles' most walkable area - where you don't need to hire a car
There are some things that are just 'so LA'. Think palm trees, celeb-spotting, Lululemon-clad women holding their overpriced Hailey Bieber-inspired crafted drinks - and, more importantly, traffic. After hopping off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan, I'm keenly anticipating all the glitz and glamour awaiting me, while dreading the amount of time I'm about to be stuck in a car this week. But, forget what you've you've heard about needing to rent a car in LA, there's a part of the City of Angels you can actually walk around and still feel like an A-lister - West Hollywood. There's so much to see here, including the Sunset Strip, Design District and Santa Monica Blvd, - and you can see it all in breathtaking views from the Skybar of my Alice in Wonderland-themed hotel, Mondrian. This hotel's location is testament to why WeHo is known as LA's most walkable area. Here, I'm a stone's throw from The Comedy Store - often deemed the greatest stand-up comedy club in the world; The Viper Room, a nightclub partly owned by Johnny Depp; and The Abbey, a favourite bar of Elizabeth Taylor and the inspiration for Chappel Roan's hit song Pink Pony Club. Naturally, the food scene in West Hollywood is remarkable, and you won't even need to leave your hotel to find a decent joint. At Mondrian, I dine at the newly opened Casa Madera which offers delectable Mexican cuisine under starry lights and large open windows showcasing the painting-like sunset. While the hotel itself is pretty swanky, the restaurant is its standout jewel, with some of the most good-looking patrons and views I have ever seen. I also eat at Ladyhawk, a restaurant in the Kimpton LA Peer Hotel, which won Best New Restaurant in LA Magazine, thanks to its prodigy chef Charbel Hayek. The Middle Eastern spot has one of the most delicious mezze platters I've tasted, complete with fresh hummus, a muhammara dish made of roasted red peppers. And for breakfast, I visit another famous hotel - Sunset Tower, which served as residence to Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. But I didn't go to LA just to eat - it's all about the active lifestyle here. After a morning workout at Taylor Swift's favourite fitness studio DOGPOUND, I head out on an e-bike tour with Bikes + Hikes to learn more about WeHo - where porn theatres and brothels have been replaced by cannabis lounge, State Social House, and rows and rows of cannabis dispensaries. Even actor Woody Harrelson has his own one - aptly named The Woods. I choose not to indulge in any of the green stuff - opting instead for some relaxation. And you certainly won't be lacking that in West Hollywood, as it has the largest number of wellness offerings on the West Coast. I try several treatments, including the red carpet facial at Bamford Spa at 1 Hotel - a go-to for the likes of Jennifer Coolidge. I sip on tea and freshly made smoothies while awaiting my appointment. Even before the facial, I'm feeling more relaxed, sipping on tea and freshly made smoothies while waiting for my appointment. And after, my face is positively glowing, with my skin having gone from dry to dewy in just an hour. But I feel like a fully fledged Angelino after the two treatments I have at Next Health - a vitamin injection in my butt and cryotherapy. It might sound mad having a bum injection, but the Beauty B shot is full of good stuff for skin, hair and nail health, like biotin and folic acid. I'm usually apprehensive about injecting anything into my body, and after seeing two of my friends get light-headed from the treatment, I do have doubts for a second - but watching the more regular customers look so nonchalant as they have vitamin drips via IV and red light therapy eases my nerves. While I can't say I feel a noticeable difference after the glute injections, the cryotherapy is one of the most refreshing treatments I've had done. The advanced cold therapy reaches temperatures as low as -65°C in just three minutes, and although my eyelashes do freeze over, I have Taylor Swift on in the background helping the time fly by - and I'd be keen to be frozen again! I feel like even more of an A-lister later, when I take a helicopter ride across the city, with Maverick Helicopters, flying over the Hollywood sign, Santa Monica Pier, Universal Studios and Harry Potter World. Suspended over such iconic locations I'd only ever seen in films before, I'm almost too starstruck to remember my fear of heights.
