Traditional PPE isn't made for everyone. Here's how one startup is fixing it.

It started with an accident that should never have happened.
While a PhD student in 2013, Beau Wangtrakuldee was working in a lab when her ill-fitting lab coat got caught, causing a vessel to tip over and spill a chemical on her that burned right through the material, causing her serious injury.
'I was out of commission for two weeks,' Wangtrakuldee told Technical.ly. 'It got me questioning because I was following safety instructions, I was doing everything I was supposed to do, and I was still hurt while wearing the protective equipment.'
AmorSui, a sustainable personal protective equipment (PPE) company founded in Philadelphia by Wangtrakuldee in 2018, was created to solve several problems with PPE, not least of which is the fact that it often doesn't fit all body types or protect from lab accidents.
Finding a better lab coat — one that was designed for a smaller-framed woman rather than an average-sized man, made of material that protected the skin — turned out to be a fruitless endeavor. By 2015, when Wangtrakuldee was doing her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, she realized while taking a course on entrepreneurship that the business potential for higher quality, better-fitting lab coats was there.
'I was at lunch with 15 or 20 of my girlfriends who work in the lab, and I shared with them my experience of having an accident in the lab,' she said. 'And every single one of the women at the table could tell me a story similar to mine.'
From chemistry labs to hospital rooms
AmorSui got off the ground in 2018 using crowdfunding to support the creation of chemical and fire-resistant garments that could be worn with lab coats. After raising $15,000 in the first 30 days, Wangtrakuldee found a fashion designer who took her specs and put together a small line of apparel.
Actual lab coats in a range of sizes, made of protective fluid-resistant fabric and other safety features, followed, as did a TechStars global accelerator cohort and more funding, including from AmorSui's first investor, Ben Franklin Technology Partners. Scientists from Penn, Harvard, MIT and other universities made up most of its early customer base.
There weren't plans, initially, to focus on the healthcare industry. And then 2020 hit.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a major flaw in the healthcare industry's reliance on low-quality, disposable PPE and medical supplies: In high-demand situations like a pandemic, they can run out when they're needed most.
'There was a huge need during COVID for PPE manufacturers that could service healthcare,' Wangtrakuldee said. 'We were one of those domestic companies, and so the business moved from just a laboratory focus line into healthcare and sustainability.'
AmorSui's lab coats, for example, last for 100 washes and about two years of regular wear, far longer than a typical, virtually disposable lab coat that lacks its safety features. Not only that, but healthcare systems also found that more sustainable, less disposable PPE ultimately saves money.
'They're switching to our product because it's an opportunity for them to save costs, to become more sustainable, to comply with [decarbonization] law, to reduce waste. It's all those things that they care about,' Wangtrakuldee said.
After the company successfully pivoted into healthcare and sustainable PPE, Wangtrakuldee and her team of 15, now based in New York City, are looking to grow in more digital ways, as they are now in a beta phase of a marketplace for sustainable PPE and medical supplies that includes both AmorSui products and other curated products that fit the mission.
Currently, AmorSui PPE is available in North America, Europe and Australia, with a planned further international expansion, including plans for availability in China in 2027.
'It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of labor of love,' Wangtrakuldee said. 'It's exciting growth, and we need a lot of partners to join us.'

When someone asks Garett Craig what he does for a living, the answer usually raises eyebrows. 'Nursineer' is the clever portmanteau Craig, a 27-year-old Canonsburg resident, has coined to describe his dual role as both nurse and engineer. It's his way of explaining a career that doesn't yet have a standard title, but he's leading the way to change that. Craig had no plans to become a nurse when he began studying biomedical engineering at Duquesne University in 2016. However, when he was offered the chance to earn a dual degree in nursing and engineering in exchange for an extra 18 months of coursework, he took a leap of faith, betting the added education would benefit his future career. 'I'm the oldest in my family, and I was always looked at as the support person and someone that everyone relied on,' Craig told 'Healthcare was that perfect role [for me], because you have patients that are relying on you to be an advocate for them and to make the best decision for what their needs are.' After graduating in 2022, Craig worked as an artificial heart engineer for healthcare giant UPMC, supporting patients with LVADs, or mechanical pump implants used to assist a failing heart. That hands-on experience, combined with his current role as an application consultant for medical equipment company Brainlab, revealed a healthcare gap that Craig is now determined to bridge: the disconnect between clinical needs and the tools engineers design to meet them. '[Engineers] don't take into consideration the nurse on a midnight shift who's burnt out, or the patient who comes in and throws the [medical device] against the wall that wasn't durable enough to be dropped,' Craig said. 'That's a scenario they've never considered because they've never been through it.' Now, Craig is spreading the word about this hybrid role, speaking with universities, attending Pittsburgh's weekly life sciences meetup BioBreakfast and connecting with fellow nurse-engineers. He hopes to bring nursineering into the mainstream, making it easier for medical tech to align with the real-world needs of hospital staff. 'It really doesn't matter to me what it's called,' Craig said. 'It just matters to me that there's someone who is a nurse and an engineer and is doing work with both of these backgrounds to improve all facets of healthcare areas.' In this edition of How I Got Here series, Craig talks about his passion for nursineering, the day-to-day realities of his job and why he's trying to build a community of people who share this hybrid skill set. This Q&A has been edited for length and clarity. Why are you passionate about nursineering? I typically say nursing is my purpose and engineering is my process. Nursing gave me the reason why I'm doing this project, why I'm making this device, why I am spending all this time and stress and sleepless nights. Nursing gave me the why, and that was because of the patients. Engineering gives me the process. Just being an engineer, I wouldn't have the connection and the understanding of these patients and what they're going through. With engineering, you're more focused on the product, the materials, the science and making it work. You don't get a lot of exposure to mental health, understanding what actually goes on in healthcare and the process that people go through to have a procedure done. There's so much more involved that you just don't get with engineering that nursing gave me. With that differing view, it really allows me to find empathy and connect with the patients or hospital staff. What does a typical day look like for you? No day is the same for me. A typical week could be: On Monday, I might do an admin day where I'm catching up on paperwork, submitting different forms for purchases or problems and emailing clients we work with, along with accounts, physicians and specialists within Brainlab, for questions, concerns and product feedback. Then on Tuesday, I might be going into the hospital to repair something broken. I might be walking in with the biomed teams, the surgeons, the coordinators, whoever would be involved, and just figuring out what went on, what happened, what needs to be fixed. That's more of the technical side of my role, installs, repairs, updates, trainings. Wednesday might be a meeting with some surgeons about potentially purchasing a new system. Now I'm wearing my sales hat, working with them, their purchasing teams and logistics teams, figuring out how we can get this to work. Thursday and Friday, I might be doing actual cases — that's my clinical side — lending support in the operating room during the procedure, helping the surgeon with the equipment, making sure everything is running smoothly and finding ways to optimize the products for them. Then on top of all that, I'm going to conferences, helping with setup, pitching new products and doing demos for surgeons, residents and med students. It's almost like three jobs in one. It constantly changes, and no week is the same. But for those who like being busy, doing things and working with many different people, it's a great fit. What advice would you give to someone breaking into the field? Say yes to everything and just figure it out later. It's a lot to manage, and you have to be organized and on top of things, but when you find something you like and just take those opportunities as they come, life can be truly one of those, 'I can't believe this is real, pinch me,' kind of feelings. How do you like to spend your free time? When I'm not doing my day job and trying to make this nurse engineer role a thing, I race vintage Formula cars. I like the fast pace, balancing all sorts of things at once and the chaoticness of being behind the wheel of a car. I'm also a student pilot. It kind of goes hand in hand. There are a lot of technical things involved and it's very detail-oriented, like the job that I have. And I'm a volunteer firefighter. The firefighting alone is truly amazing. You don't know it until you see it. If I'm not racing cars, flying planes or firefighting, I always take on new projects. I hate being comfortable. I like to be constantly growing and feeling stimulated, like there's something that's going to happen. I always say I want to feel like I'm at the beginning of a really good movie where you don't know what's going to happen. It's the adventure that really makes me wake up in the morning and function. What's next for you and nursineering? I want to develop a community or an association of nurse engineers. I want to put faces and names to this idea, make it a reality and start a new movement of clinically trained but also technically comfortable individuals who can walk into a hospital, instantly pick up on everything and start making change. I've been in contact with different universities to come in and start talking with students about this. There are universities other than Duquesne that are starting these dual degrees and combining nursing with other technical fields. My ultimate goal is to make this a movement and really see change.

Exit Interview: Baltimore economic development leader dives into challenges, accomplishments

Colin Tarbert has spent almost his entire two-decade career in Baltimore's public sector. Now, he's going south to Florida. Tarbert announced his departure from the Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) this summer after a six-year stint as president and CEO. During that time, he oversaw the disruption of Covid, strategic changes to the BDC venture Emerging Technology Centers and redevelopment projects across the city. The new president and CEO of the BDC, Otis Rolley, began work at the end of June. He most recently served as a social impact advisor at investment company Kingdom Capital in Missouri and has held different roles in Baltimore's city government. Rolley is the first Black man to lead the BDC. Tarbert's stint in that top spot wasn't his first with the city's public-private economic development agency — he held a couple of roles between 2006 and 2010, and, like Rolley, worked directly for the city. He studied architecture at the University of Maryland and didn't plan to have a career in the public sector. But he's proud of a lot of the work he's done in Baltimore — like providing grants to businesses during Covid and collecting comprehensive data about economic development in the city. 'I was never setting out to have this career in city government,' Tarbert said, 'but [that's] the way it played out.' spoke with Tarbert about his time at the BDC and what he's looking forward to in his next role at the DownTown Investment Authority in Jacksonville. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Thinking about your most recent stint and your tenure at the BDC, is there anything specific that you're proud of accomplishing? There was so much, and a lot of it was continuation of work that had been going on in the city for a long time. This type of work, it takes a very long time to make progress. When I came to BDC, I had the opportunity to focus more on the economic development piece of it. There were a number of accomplishments that I'm really proud of — nothing that happens is singular; this all takes a lot of teamwork, both within BDC and the partners outside of BDC. One initiative that I started with, I think will continue, is the Baltimore Together initiative. That was really resetting the comprehensive economic development strategy for the city, and putting forth a vision that was new and very intentional about reaching residents and businesses and stakeholders who traditionally felt excluded from economic development — or at least perceived that they were excluded. The other big piece that happened was Covid. We were then on the front lines of the crisis, helping get businesses the grants and funding that they needed to survive. While that was certainly mentally and physically taxing, it was also rewarding, because businesses that would come up and be like, 'If we hadn't got that grant from BDC, we would have been out of business,' or, 'We would have lost [the] house,' or what have you. Let's talk more about Covid. How did it shape or change BDC's strategy? What was interesting was we started the Baltimore Together strategic plan a few months before Covid hit. We just finished a very intense round of stakeholder engagement at the end of 2019. That had already started to take form. It was focused on minorities, small businesses, businesses and disinvested neighbors, etc. So when Covid hit, we already had that lens to look through. Which was super helpful, because we, as a collective team at BDC, were able to have enough of a pause when Covid hit to think through how we were going to distribute the grants. Virtually [all] other cities, jurisdictions, the state, did all of their grants — for the most part — on a first-come, first-served basis. We did not. We did it on a need basis, which was 10 times the amount of work, I can tell you, because we went through and evaluated each application. But what it did was, it allowed us to distribute the dollars to the businesses who did not receive a lot of the other funding that was first-come, first-served. What it showed was the vast majority of our grantees had not received other funding. So those people and those businesses would've been out of business, or much more disproportionately impacted by Covid, if we hadn't taken that approach. How did specific challenges change how you led the BDC? There were two big challenges as a CEO during that time. Part of it was Covid, and trying to hold together a team virtually. Because it was a prolonged public health crisis, we were hiring people that I had never met in person, right? That was kind of an odd situation. I was in the office most of the time, because I was hands-on, and I like working in the office, but it's hard to build those rapport relationships with people that you've never met online. The other piece of it that was a big challenge, from a leadership standpoint, that was compounded by Covid, was the George Floyd situation and the racial, national discussion that was happening at the same time. Especially for a white male leader at an organization that's very diverse, in a city that's majority African American, it was just a very intense time. To try to have those conversations virtually was not easy, I would say. I'd say leaving BDC, I think I left it much better than it was. Certainly, during the Covid period, because we were able to come together and work in person, which I think had a lot of benefits to it. Emerging Technology Centers, or ETC, went through several changes under your leadership. Looking back, how did you manage the transitions? I'm really excited about the direction that ETC is headed under Dr. Arti Santhanam. I think she definitely understands the opportunity, and she's done a great job laying the foundation for the new ETC, maybe 4.0, at this point. It was a 10-year lease [at ETC's Haven Street offices, its third locale ] that was coming to an end. And at the same time, the executive director was retiring, and there were some folks that had left ETC, during the pandemic and working remotely. [ Note: Tarbert's version of events was disputed in prior reporting by Deb Tillet, ETC's then-outgoing executive director, who said at the time that she was asked to retire.] We made the decision to engage with the consulting firm HR&A Advisors. We did a really extensive strategic plan, because also during that whole period of time, UpSurge had come on the scene, and so they were doing a lot of work that ETC had traditionally done. We didn't want to duplicate efforts. We wanted to be additive to the — I'll use the word 'ecosystem.' We did a whole strategic plan, and the decision was made that we should really step back. We don't need to do [a] coworking space, because nobody needed any more office space. While ETC always had business coaches and accountants and lawyers who would do pro bono services, it didn't have a much higher level of that. So now, it's bringing in funding, and the idea is for Arti to build an investment fund that would also invest in the company and give ETC a more hands-on approach to management, which we hadn't done in the past — and which TEDCO is set up not to do purposefully. The idea here is for ETC to focus on just a handful of companies within the life science spaces, to try to get them to the next level. We're going to go very narrow and deep, as opposed to the previous ETC, which was much wider, but not as used in terms of services. I see UpSurge doing that work already. That's the vision for ETC. I think it's working. What do you think BDC is better at now than when you started? There's a lot of talent at BDC, and building that team was [an] accomplishment. It's harder to see it from the outside, but inside, I think we built a lot of skills and leadership beyond just the C-suite. The blessing and the curse of being CEO is you get the recognition or the blame for things that you might not have anything to do with. In this case, it was very, very positive. The team had been working for a long time on commercial corridors, and that was actually through Covid, and through a lot of the GIS testing that we were doing for grants. From that, come up with different strategies for each commercial corridor on what struggles they might be having, whether it's a certain type of retail that they're missing, or a certain building type that seems to be problematic. That was an example of how the teams came up with their own ideas and solutions and implemented them without a top-down approach. I think a lot of that came from my leadership style. What are you looking forward to most with your new job in Jacksonville? For about the last decade, they've been working and have had some great success redeveloping their downtown, revitalizing it, making it an attractive place to live, work, play. I was drawn to the position because, one, I really enjoy the planning and the real estate development aspect, and the opportunity to build what I hope will be a great, thriving city. I think they're already on their way to doing that without a lot of recent successes. In a lot of ways, it reminded me of Baltimore and what we've accomplished here along the waterfront development. For me, I just saw the opportunity, and they were really interested in having an outside perspective, which isn't always the case. I think it was a perfect match, in a lot of ways, for the work that I've done here, with their interest in where they want to take the city, and especially their downtown. I think there's going to be a lot happening in Jacksonville, and just excited to play a part of it.
