Newcastle make Alexander Isak decision after opening talks for Man Utd target

Metro19 hours ago
Newcastle United are plotting another move for Hugo Ekitike, hoping to sign the striker to play alongside Alexander Isak rather than replacing him.
Ekitike has attracted interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United this summer with his 22 goals last season helping Eintracht Frankfurt qualify for the Champions League.
A huge €100million (£86m) release clause poses a major stumbling block for any side looking to prise him away from the Bundesliga.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle have made contact with the Frenchman's representatives, informing them of their desire to sign the striker even if it means paying that clause in full.
It will be Newcastle's third attempt to sign the France Under-21 international having initially been rejected in favour of Paris Saint-Germain in 2022.

The Magpies have already strengthened their attack this summer, confirming the arrival of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a £55m deal on Friday.
The Sweden international will compete with Jacob Murphy for a role on the right with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Elliot options on the left.
Having missed out on Joao Pedro who rejected them to join Chelsea, Newcastle want another striker to complete a stacked forward line ahead of their return to the Champions League.
Their pursuit of Ekitike is therefore not regarded as an attempt to find a replacement for Isak, but to provide cover and competition for the Swede.
The report adds Newcastle still have no interest selling last season's top scorer.
Arsenal are long-term admirers of Isak but have moved on this summer, in talks to sign his countryman Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.
Liverpool meanwhile have also been linked with a move. Previous reports have indicated it would take a bid close to the world record £200m fee Paris Saint-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar in 2017. More Trending
Elanga meanwhile played a vital role in Forest's campaign last season with his focus now on Newcastle's mission to secure more silverware.
'I'm ready to put on this black-and-white top to really fight for this team and give everything for the passionate fanbase that lives and breathes football,' Elanga said.
'I had an amazing two years at Nottingham Forest, they really helped me to become the player I am today, but I'm really happy to be here now.
'The club won a trophy last season and are building something unique, something special that I really want to be part of.'

The brothers will be commemorated with touching tributes from the two clubs. Before kick-off, there will be a rendition of Liverpool's anthem You'll Never Walk Alone and Preston will lay a wreath alongside the away supporters. A minute's silence will be observed in memory of Diogo and Andre, while digital tributes will be displayed on the screen and across pitchside LEDs - and both sets of players will wear black armbands during the match. Preston are also offering a free 16-page matchday programme dedicated to the late brothers to all supporters with a matchday ticket. Heartbroken Liverpool players returned for pre-season training on Tuesday after the majority of stars attended Jota's funeral in Portugal last weekend.

Man Utd in race against time to meet Amorim's deadline to sign 'frustrated' star

Manchester United are hoping to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo this summer, but negotiations have dragged on and Ruben Amorim wants the deal done as soon as possible Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants a deal for Bryan Mbeumo finalised before their pre-season tour of the US begins on July 22. The Red Devils have already had two bids rejected by Brentford, who want more than the £62.5million United paid for Matheus Cunha. And United are now in a race against time to sign Mbeumo before they leave for America later this month to play three games against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton. Mbeumo has also been left frustrated by the situation, with negotiations dragging on. ‌ Mbeumo has made it clear that he wants to join United and Ashu Cyprian Besong, Cameroon's assistant coach, has revealed the forward is not happy with how things are going. "Yes, obviously he's very frustrated with how long it's taken," Besong told Telecom Asia. ‌ "But he's a professional and anticipates these things. I spoke to him about a week ago and he is very calm with everything that is going on. 'But of course, he's already told them he wants to go to United. "He just wanted the two clubs to find an agreement, as he's very grateful for the opportunity that he's been given by Brentford in his career." However, Brentford have hinted that Mbeumo will remain at the club if their asking price is not met, with director of football Phil Giles telling BBC Sport last month: "He had a fantastic season. ‌ "We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career, of course he does – he is well within his rights to do that. We are in constant dialogue with him and representatives about that. "As it stands at the minute we don't have an agreement in place for him to leave. It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay. It has to be the right deal for Brentford, any club will tell you that. ‌ "If it's not right deal why would we do it? He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There's no harm in keeping your best players." Mbeumo enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Brentford last season, netting 20 Premier League goals in 38 appearances. ‘What is appropriate?' – Arne Slot opens up on coping with Diogo Jota tragedy and his advice to heartbroken Reds squad

The tragic Portuguese star has inspired his team-mates even after his death HEALING WISDOM 'What is appropriate?' – Arne Slot opens up on coping with Diogo Jota tragedy and his advice to heartbroken Reds squad Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ARNE SLOT admits nothing seems to be important at Liverpool following the death of striker Diogo Jota. The champions return to action at Preston this afternoon, still mourning the loss of their Portuguese international forward ten days ago. Slot has spoken for the first time since the devastating news and says the club has to find a way to move on and start focussing on football again. For now, he has told his players to be themselves as they come to terms with the sudden loss of their popular team-mate. The Anfield boss said: 'Nothing seems to be important if we think of what has happened. 'But we are a football club and we need to train and we need to play again, if we want it or not. 'What I've said to the players, I can say it here as well. It's very difficult to find the right words because we constantly debate what is appropriate. 'What is appropriate in our actions? What is appropriate for what we have to say? Can we train again? Can we laugh again? Can we be angry if there's a wrong decision? 'And I've said to them, maybe the best thing for us to do is handle this situation like Jota was. And what I meant with that is that Jota was always himself. Diogo Jota's classy act of humility left me and my U13s team stunned - he was a credit to his family and football 'It didn't matter if he was talking to me, to his teammates, to the staff, he was always himself. 'So let us try to be ourselves as well. So, if we want to laugh we laugh, if we want to cry we're going to cry. 'If they want to train they can train, if they don't want to train they can not train. But be yourself, don't think you have to be different than your emotions tell you.' Liverpool announced last week that they will retire Jota's No20 shirt in all their teams right across the club as a lasting tribute to him. Slot has welcomed the move, saying: 'We will always carry him with us in our hearts, in our thoughts, wherever we go. 'Maybe especially in difficult moments but in any moment we are here, we will carry him with us in our thoughts and in our hearts. 'To retire his shirt is the one thing we could, should and have done.' Slot and his wife Mirjam were among the thousands who have visited Anfield to pay their respects to Jota over the past few days. And he said the fact the former Wolves forward had been through such an unforgettable few weeks gave him some solace in the dark days. He said: 'What I take comfort in is that in the last month of his life he was a champion in everything. 7 Jota's passing shook the world of football Credit: Alamy 7 Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United at Jota's funeral Credit: Getty 'A champion for his family, which is the main and most important thing, because he got married. 'A champion for his country because he won the Nations League, [with] a country that he cared about so much. 'And of course a champion for us by winning the Premier League.' The outpouring of emotion since Jota's death has only reinforced Slot's own bond with the club and supporters. He said: 'In the title parade, it was only the Liverpool fans I assume. Now this time it was the complete city, it wasn't only Liverpool, it was also the Everton fans. 'And not only this city but also all around the country and in the world. To represent this club in this city now even means more to me and to my wife than it did before.' 7 He passed away only ten days after his marriage Credit: Instagram
