Defiant Benjamin Nygren delivers Celtic prophecy for Champions League after Ajax reality check
Benjamin Nygren insists Celtic WILL be ready for their crucial Champions League showdown next month.
Ajax wiped the floor with the Hoops in Thursday's night's 5-1 friendly reality check for Celts with boss Brendan Rodgers admitted his squad is still short of what is required for the coming season.
The champions kick-off their title defence to St Mirren in eight days and are four weeks away from a crunch clash to get into the Champions League group stage – with the draw a week on Monday.
Nygren has hit the ground running following his £1.7m move and impressed in recent runouts against Newcastle United and Sporting Lisbon.
And he is adamant Celts won't be caught cold for the big one. Nygren said: 'I am confident we will be ready for those matches.
'We have very good players and I have already seen in the training games that we have a lot of quality. It wasn't good enough against Ajax but we will be ready.'
Nygren is determined to blast his way to the big time and the Euro theme tune would be music to his ears.
He said: 'The Champions League is a huge ambition for me and one of those dreams I have.
'I want to play at that level and hear that anthem. I really, really want to take that step.'
Nygren has made a slick start with Celts in pre-season and he admitted he already feels right at home.
He said: 'It's been very good. I've only got very good first impressions of everything, the staff, the players and the whole organisation - as well as the fans.
'It's been easy to settle in and I've just tried to focus on my thing and showing my qualities and how good I am.
'I always feel confident of bringing that to all of the training sessions as well as the games I play.
'That's something I want to show so it's been really good and I am happy to be here.'

Rangers make Oliver Antman transfer breakthrough with deal timeline emerging
Talks over a move for the Finnish international have been progressing and now a deal could be in sight for Russell Martin Oliver Antman is set to sign for Rangers after the Ibrox club agreed a fee with Go Ahead Eagles. Record Sport understands that an agreement has been reached with the Eredivise outfit for the Finnish wide man, with sources in the Netherlands suggesting that the 23-year-old could become Russell Martin 's latest signing within the next 24 to 48 hours. Talks have taken place over a switch to Ibrox and a breakthrough has been made with the Deventer-based outfit. A fee of around £5million has been reported, and now it's understood that progress has been made with both club and player, easing the way for a move to Govan to happen. Antman won't be eligible for Wednesday night's Champions League second leg showdown with Panathinaikos in Athens even if he signs in time. But he could well be in the squad Martin takes to Fir Park on Saturday as Gers begin their Scottish Premiership campaign with an evening kick-off away to Motherwell. Antman bagged 7 goals and an impressive 17 assists to help fire Go Ahead to Dutch Cup glory last term. Sheffield United had been strongly linked with Antman, along with Belgian outfit and recent Ibrox visitors Club Brugge. But it now looks as if Gers have won the race. Go Ahead Eagles director Jan Willem van Dop insisted Antman, along with Celtic-linked teammate Jakob Breum, wouldn't leave on the cheap. He told Oost: "We think Breum and Antman should be allowed to leave for more than six million," which would seem to be the threshold Rangers have met to get a deal over the line. Former PSV, Barcelona and Dutch international star Ibrahim Affelay predicted that Antman would bank Go Ahead good money. he said: "That Antman is really... I think the treasurer is rubbing his hands with glee. He's going to make a fantastic transfer at the end of the season."

But as her standing foot gave way she fired the ball with her right on to her left boot. The double touch diverted the ball beyond the Spanish goalkeeper and it rolled into the back of the net. Due to recently changed new rules, a retake was ordered by referee Stephanie Frappart. The outrage over the decision caused IFAB to alter Law 14, which is based on a player intentionally kicking the ball twice during a penalty. Chloe Kelly completes Lionesses' greatest comeback yet to retain Euros title It now states: "The penalty taker inadvertently hits the ball with both feet simultaneously or the ball touches his supporting foot or leg just after taking the kick: If the ball enters the goal, it will be repeated. "If the ball does not enter the goal, an indirect free kick will be awarded (unless the referee grants an advantage when the action clearly benefits the defending team) or, in the case of penalty shoot-outs, the shot will be recorded as missed." Meanwhile, if a player voluntarily kicks with both feet, the alternative rule states: "An indirect free kick will be awarded (unless the referee grants an advantage when the action clearly benefits the defending team) or, in the case of penalty shoot-outs, the shot will be recorded as missed."
