All About the First Actor with Down Syndrome to Lead an Action Movie: Race Eberhardt 'Has That It Factor'

Race Eberhardt might soon be a household name!
The 37-year-old is the first actor with Down syndrome to ever lead an action movie, in the upcoming film Strait Undercover, produced by Fish & Crown Creative, according to the Today show.
"This is a story about an underdog USDA agent who dreams of doing something big with his career," a synopsis for the film reads. "He's the only one in his department with the guts to go undercover."
"His 'special ability' centers around his capacity to communicate with Earth's plants, a skill he takes for granted until it ultimately saves the day. 🎞️," it adds.
Fish & Crown President/Director Ben Gonyo, who directed Strait Undercover, spoke to Today in an interview that aired Wednesday, Jan. 29, where he said of Eberhardt, "He has that 'it' factor that when I see him on camera, I want to see more."

Eberhardt plays Race Strait, the protagonist of the film. And as Gonyo explained on Today, "The goal was to create a character around the real-life Race."
The filmmaker continued, "It wasn't to try to push him into a box, to be something. So we took his real-life essence and then wrapped a story around it."
According to the synopsis "Strait Undercover stars an actor with Down syndrome, but takes a refreshing approach by not focusing on Race's disability, intentionally omitting any mention of Down syndrome throughout the film."
"We're breaking away from the tradition of forcing actors with special needs to identify with their special need on screen," it adds.
"For us, it was very important to not make the story about the disability," Gonyo continued in his interview with Today. "What we see traditionally in films is that the characters on screen are forced to identify with their disability, almost as the reason they're on screen. I feel like that's a way that it used to be done, and we want to look forward and do it in a new way."

The director also told Today that Strait Undercover "is an example of artists doing it differently."
"And maybe that can inspire other people and they can see, 'If you can see it, you can be it.' You know, that saying? Maybe that they can take something from that," he added.
For Eberhardt — who began acting at age 10, including in local productions of Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast — he now counts Race Strait as a "new hero" among other big-name action stars and characters like Chuck Norris, Tom Cruise and Jason Bourne (Matt Damon).
As for Gonyo, "He is a dream-come-true guy," Eberhardt said on the Today show, to which the filmmaker replied, "Both of our dreams comin' true."
Strait Undercover is slated for a summer 2025 release, and is available for preorder now at straitundercover.com.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth' Is a Love Letter to the Original—Here's When You Can Stream It

Over three decades (and several sequels) after Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park first roared onto screens, Jurassic World Rebirth arrives as a bold new chapter in the beloved franchise. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla), the film revisits the chaos of dino resurrection through a standalone story that honors the original while introducing a new generation of characters—and creatures. The film premieres in theaters today. Set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, Rebirth opens in a world where most dinosaurs have been pushed into isolated zones along the equator. Among them are three genetically modified giants whose DNA may hold the key to a revolutionary new drug. That premise sends a team of operatives, led by Scarlett Johansson's Zora Bennett, on a high-stakes mission to a remote island once home to InGen's most secretive lab. 'I saw Jurassic Park when I was 10 years old in the theater,' Johansson said in an interview with Today. 'It was so impactful—I was completely transfixed, mesmerized, carried away, terrified, all of that stuff, and it's part of the formative part of my childhood.' For Johansson, the role is a longtime dream fulfilled. 'It turns out that if you harass Frank Marshall enough, you could get a job,' she joked, referencing the longtime franchise producer. The cast also includes Jonathan Bailey as museum paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, Mahershala Ali as government operative Duncan Kincaid, and Luna Blaise as Teresa, a girl whose family vacation gets interrupted by the prehistoric beasts. 'It's a whole new band of characters that nobody's seen before,' Blaise told ELLE of the film. 'It's a new story and a new chapter.' She added of her co-star Johansson, 'Seeing Scarlett man the troops and be the captain of our ship was awesome.' Edwards, who grew up admiring Spielberg, leaned into the original film's feel. 'Jurassic Park is perfect pure cinema,' he told NBC. 'I never thought I could beat what Steven did. But I do hope we've made a film that's worthy of it.' Rebirth was shot on 35mm film and filmed on location in Thailand and Malta. 'Thailand had some pretty serious creature critters,' Johansson noted to Today, recalling a jungle shoot interrupted by cockroaches and scorpions. But the film's real monsters are the new hybrid giants. Among them: the Distortus Rex, or D-Rex, a terrifying blend of T-Rex DNA with influences from other movie monsters. 'There's a little bit of the Rancor from Star Wars, and some of H.R. Giger's alien in there,' Edwards told Collider. 'But there's also this empathy—we wanted you to feel slightly sorry for it.' Not yet—but it's coming. Jurassic World Rebirth is currently playing only in theaters. However, as a Universal Pictures release, it will likely be available soon for digital rent or purchase. When it comes to streaming, Rebirth is expected to arrive on Peacock after its theatrical premiere, following the Universal Studios' standard release pattern, though no official date has been confirmed. Get Tickets In the meantime, fans can revisit the full Jurassic saga from the beginning. All six previous films in the franchise—Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom, and Dominion—are currently available to stream on Peacock. Melinda French Gates says ‘outside' factors in Bill Gates marriage led to divorce: ‘I kept pushing it away'

Melinda French Gates has opened up about her decision to divorce her longtime husband, Bill Gates, after 27 years of marriage. The 60-year-old philanthropist revealed that despite the high stakes the divorce had brought about, her decision ultimately came from a personal place. 'When that voice would come — and it would come at different times because of things that had happened outside the marriage that I would later come to learn about — I kept pushing it away,' French Gates said on the 'How to Fail with Elizabeth Day' podcast Wednesday. 4 Melinda French Gates has opened up about her decision to divorce her longtime husband, Bill Gates, after 27 years of marriage. How To Fail with Elizabeth Day / YouTube She admitted to feeling pressure to maintain the relationship for their three children and their joint philanthropic venture, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 'We had a foundation and that was big and I believed in that work. I still believe in the work of the foundation,' she said, adding that her inner voice eventually became too loud to ignore. 'At some point I had to turn towards it, and I just knew it and I knew it in my soul,' she explained. French Gates added that it took her a long time to conclude that her marriage to the Microsoft co-founder was beyond repair. 4 The pair announced their divorce in 2021 after secretly separating the year before. AP 'I took marriage — and I still do — very, very seriously and it wasn't just two of us involved, it was five of us,' she said, referring to the pair's kids Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22. The exes met in 1987 during a Microsoft sales meeting when Melinda was a product manager and Bill was the company's CEO. After he reportedly asked her out on a date in a parking lot, the pair's romance blossomed and saw them tie the knot on New Year's Day 1994. 4 The 60-year-old philanthropist revealed that despite the high stakes the divorce had brought about, her decision ultimately came from a personal place. Savannah Guthrie touches on 'horrible' divorce: 'It took me years to recover'

Savannah Guthrie is offering rare insight into her divorce from her first husband. The "Today" host, 53, touched on her split from Mark Orchard during a discussion on Monica Lewinsky's "Reclaiming" podcast in an episode released on Tuesday, July 1. "It was horrible and sad, and it broke my heart," she said. "It took me years to recover." Guthrie was married to Orchard from 2005 to 2009. The topic was brought up when Lewinsky asked Guthrie about her decision to include a disclaimer in her 2024 book, "Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere," stating that there were some personal subjects she would not go into depth on. Guthrie said she included this disclaimer because she wanted to establish her qualifications to write about topics like loss and suffering, without fully getting into details about her experience in those areas. "I wanted to say, 'You know what? I have experienced adversity, but I don't really want to tell you about the depths of that, because some of it was just too personal and too embarrassing,'" she told Lewinsky. "I have had my moments, and I have had my sadnesses. ... But I don't want to go there," the NBC host went on to say. "I'm down here, my feet are burning on the pavement. I just don't want to tell you why the pavement was so hot, or how many blisters I had on my feet. I don't want to give you the gory details." Savannah Guthrie reveals this was 'the hardest' topic to write about in her book on faith Guthrie pointed to her divorce as an example of one of those topics she did not want to go into further detail about in her writing. "I'm not blaming anyone, but I don't really want to get into it," she said. Guthrie has been married to Michael Feldman since 2014. They have two children together. Speaking to USA TODAY in 2024, Guthrie described "Mostly What God Does" as a "really vulnerable and personal" series of reflections on faith. "It's that way because in so many ways, this is the book that I need to read," she said. "… I need to be reminded, like we all do, that God loves us and is on our side and has an eternal promise to be present to us." Contributing: Erin Jensen
