Motorsport: Crunch time for Armstrong and Byrne in Scandinavia
The 17-stage Karlstad-based rally is a familiar location for the 30-year-old Kesh driver, who made his Rally2 debut at this level two years ago.
'It's primarily on roads used every day, so they're very wide and compact. But you've got quite a lot of loose gravel on top, so you want a lower road position to avoid road sweeping.
It's all about carrying your speed, getting your lines right and keeping your right foot down as much as possible," said Armstrong.
The former ERC3 champion will take encouragement from his pace in Rally Hungary, where he was only some 10 seconds off the lead after five stages before two punctures dropped him well down the order.
"When you've lost that much time, you just have to try to reset and get back to the front again, just try to keep your pace up.'
Points on the board for Armstrong/Byrne will be important, especially after their non-finish in the first round in Spain.
While they recovered to finish 10th in Hungary, the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team crew will push the Pirelli-shod Ford Fiesta Rally2 to the maximum.
Armstrong continued: 'Sweden's a different character rally (in comparison to the rough stages in Hungary) there will be lots of locals, but we have to give it a good go, it's my third year here, so I need to keep the right foot down.
"It's not been a good start to the season but at least we have some pace. We just need some luck and a result and hopefully that will come.'
Those locals include Isak Reiersen (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) and reigning ERC Junior champion Mille Johansson (20), who has upgraded to a Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 for his home event.
Fresh from his ERC winning debut outing in Hungary, much is expected of Finland's Roope Korhonen in his MRF Tyres Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 and his battle with championship leader Miko Marczyk (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) and the similar car of Andrea Mabellini, Citroen C3 Rally 2 duo Mads Ostberg and Max McRae, Jos Verstappen and Simone Tempestini - both in Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 cars and inaugural Junior ERC champion Stéphane Lefebvre (Toyota GR Yaris Rally2) should be interesting. Armstrong, seeded at nine, should be very much in the mix.
Meanwhile, and in the absence of championship leader Cashel's Pat O'Connell, who is on a family vacation, there's a strong possibility that the Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally series will have a new leader at the end of Saturday's Mayo Forest Rally, the fourth round of the championship.
Tyrone's Jason Mitchell (Skoda Fabia Rs Rally2) is best placed to take advantage as he seeks to continue his good form having won on his two outings to date. He won last time out in Mitchelstown to close to within five points of O'Connell, however, given the shorter nature of tomorrow's event - just 45.16km - there will be room for error.
Having made a good start, reigning champion Monaghan's Derek Mackarel (Ford Fiesta R5) has struggled with problems on his last two outings while Waterford's Andrew Purcell (Ford Fiesta Rally2) will be determined to turn the tables on Mitchell on this occasion.
Others like the Tyrone trio of Gareth Mimnagh, Niall McGonigle and Stephen Dickson, all in Ford Fiesta Rally2 cars, provide the top opposition.
The Mk.2 Escorts of Tyrone's Hugh McQuaid and Donegal's Damien Tourish are the top seeds in the two-wheel drive category where the Peugeot 208 Rally4 pair Cian Caldwell and Keelan Grogan and Jack Harris (Ford Fiesta) should make an impression.
There are some twenty-six entries in the J1000 category led by the VW UP of Kilkenny's David Travers with a debut for former karter Meath's Holly Dunnion (Peugeot 107). The first of the six stages begins at 9.31am.
Elsewhere, the Skibbereen Endurance Trial that has twenty selectives over the day has a 10.00am start on Sunday from the Carbery Rangers GAA complex in Rosscarbery.

Sligo has a new European champion as Cian McMunn wins gold at European showjumping event
Sligo's McMunn took gold and Tipperary's Charlie Flynn the bronze medal with HK Zena on a hugely dramatic afternoon in Le Mans which saw four riders in a jump-off for the three medals. After five thrilling days of top-class jumping in which Ireland secured a team silver after being pipped in a jump-off by the British, it all came down to the final four combinations to decide who would win gold, silver and bronze. McMunn and Daisy Breen, who is the daughter of Irish senior star Shane Breen, were the only two to remain clear since Wednesday, and it came down to speed and precision here to decide the champion. McMunn was first to jump and was flawless on Esperando SK in a time of 39.25, meaning Breen would need to be quick and clear. When she dropped a pole halfway through her round, it meant McMunn was European Pony Champion. Before that, Flynn and Sophia Rogers, themselves the only two riders to only have four faults for the week, went head-to-head to decide the bronze medal. Flynn was first of the four back into the arena with HK Zena and he went out hard, jumping clear in a time of 38.76 seconds and really put it up to his competitor. Rogers, with pressure on, had no option but to follow Flynn's lead and go out with pace in abundance. She flew home to the last but couldn't match the Irish teen's time and finished clear in 39.41 seconds, meaning Flynn was bronze medallist. It marks a remarkable week for the Irish jumpers after their silver win on Friday and rounds off a magnificent campaign for the new management team of Horse Sport Ireland Youth Show Jumping Lead Consultant Flannelly and Youth Athlete Liaison Liz Brennan. Flannelly said: 'This is just incredible – Cian and Charlie have jumped spectacularly well all week and when the pressure was really on they showed how much it meant to them, keeping their composure and jumping two quick, clear rounds. 'They are both fantastic young men and deserve every success – I'm so proud of them. It was a great achievement to win silver here on Friday as a team and I think, secretly, the two lads had that extra bit of determination to not let being beaten in a jump-off happen again. They've produced the goods and guaranteed gold and bronze medals, it's amazing. 'We've had a superb campaign this year, and it's all down to our support staff on the ground, the grooms, our vet Tim, the team in Horse Sport Ireland and of course, the families of these riders, who make these days possible. Four match ban for Lions hooker Dan Sheehan
Dan Sheehan has been handed a four match ban after he was cited for dangerous play during the British and Irish Lions third Test against Australia on Saturday in Sydney. The Leinster and Ireland hooker appeared to make contact with the Wallabies fly-half Tom Lynagh's head as he drove into a ruck in the first half. The incident was not picked up live by the match officials with Sheehan continuing to play although Lynagh was forced off due to a head injury. Independent citing commissioner Adrien Menez spotted the incident and citied the Irish international. Following the independent disciplinary process on Monday morning, Sheehan has been suspended for four matches, under Law 9.20(a) charging into a ruck, and may be reduced to three should he successfully complete the coaching intervention programme. The Independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) was chaired by Wang Shao-Ing (Singapore) and joined by former player Mike Mika (New Zealand) and former match official Valeriu Toma (Romania). In determining foul play the Committee found Sheehan's actions to be reckless and that he had made head contact with the Australian player with actions that amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied. Based on the evidence the Committee decided the offence warranted the mandatory mid range entry point of six matches. The Committee decided not to award the full 50% mitigation as Sheehan did not accept there was foul play which resulted in a final sanction of four matches (which may be reduced following completion of the coaching intervention). Sheehan will be suspended for the following matches: 13 September 2025: Leinster vs Cardiff (pre-season) 26 September 2025: Leinster vs Stormers (URC) 11 October 2025: Leinster vs Sharks (URC) 18 October 2025: Leinster vs Munster (URC)* * The Player will be available to play in this match subject to successful completion of the coaching intervention.
