"Yes,"

18 illegal Bangladeshi settlers sent to detention centre in Odisha's Kendrapara
KENDRAPARA: Police on Sunday apprehended 18 suspected Muslim Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally at different places in the coastal district. Two suspected Bangladeshi nationals were rounded up from Rajendranarayanpur and Rangani villages within Talachua Marine police limits. Another 16 illegal immigrants were apprehended from Kereragada and Gopalpur villages in Rajnagar area. These people were caught on basis of sustained ground-level intelligence and they could not produce valid documents to prove their Indian citizenship, said police. 'We suspect that these foreign nationals entered India illegally through unauthorised riverine routes and were residing in coastal pockets of the district without valid documents. All the detainees failed to establish their Indian nationality during interrogation. They have been lodged in a detention centre. Further investigation is underway,' said IIC of Rajnagar police station Naresh Sahoo. All illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and other countries will not be spared. Police have formed a team to identify and apprehend foreign nationals staying illegally in the district without valid documents. The move is necessary for national security, Sahoo added. Earlier on June 9, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had directed the district administration to take strict legal action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants during a review meeting at Kendrapara. In March this year, the chief minister had informed the Odisha Assembly that a total of 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators were identified in the state. The highest number of 1,649 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were residing in Kendrapara followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur, 655 in Malkangiri, 199 in Bhadrak, 106 in Nabarangpur and 17 in Bhubaneswar. Notably in 2005, the state government had served 'Quit India' notices to 1,551 suspected Bangladeshi immigrants who illegally entered India and settled in coastal pockets of Kendrapara.

If ceasefire with Pak possible, why not with Maoists: Telangana Congress chief
HYDERABAD: In a sharp reaction to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's criticism of Telangana Congress' appeal for initiating talks with Maoists, TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Monday wondered why a ceasefire and peace talks were not possible with left wing extremists, who are Indian citizens. He asked: 'When the same is possible with Pakistan with the intervention of US President Donald J Trump, why not with Maoists?' Speaking to the media on Monday after inspecting the arrangements for the proposed public meeting on July 4 at LB Stadium alongside ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Vakiti Srihari, MLAs and MPs, the TPCC chief said that Amit Shah was making accusations against the Congress as if the party was financing left-wing extremism. He clarified that the Maoists only sought a ceasefire and peace talks. 'We only requested a ceasefire with Maoists. Amit Shah is portraying it in different shades,' he said. Stating that AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge will hold a public meeting in the city against the 'fascist rule' by BJP at the Centre on July 4, he said that the party delegates from Gram Panchayat president to state office-bearers will attend the public meeting. He said the Political Affairs Committee, and extended Political Executive Committee meetings will be held the same day.

'I Was In The Room...:' Jaishankar Rebuts Trump's Ceasefire Claim, Recounts India-Pakistan Conflict Chronology
Jaishankar refuted claims that trade was a factor in discussions, asserting that India's position on the ceasefire was driven by security interests, not external pressure External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has once again firmly rejected US President Donald Trump's assertion that trade was used as leverage to push India and Pakistan into agreeing to a ceasefire following the escalation of tensions in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. Speaking exclusively with Newsweek in New York, Jaishankar refuted claims that trade was a factor in the diplomatic discussions, asserting that India's position on the ceasefire was driven by security interests, not external pressure. Detailing his first-hand account of the talks between New Delhi and Washington before the ceasefire agreement with Islamabad, Jaishankar emphasised that there was no link between trade negotiations and the ceasefire decision. He revealed that he was with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when US Vice-President JD Vance contacted him by phone, clarifying that no such trade-condition linkage was discussed from India's side. 'I can tell you that I was in the room when Vice President Vance spoke to Prime Minister Modi on the night of May 9, saying that the Pakistanis would launch a very massive assault on India…We did not accept certain things, and the Prime Minister was impervious to what the Pakistanis were threatening to do," the minister said, adding: 'On the contrary, he (PM Modi) indicated that there would be a response from us." Sharing the chronology of the events leading up to the ceasefire, Jaishankar said after Vance's call, what followed the next morning was a call between the foreign minister and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who told him that 'Pakistanis were ready to talk". Later that afternoon, Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations, Major General Kashif Abdullah, directly called his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, to seek a ceasefire. 'So, I can only tell you from my personal experience what happened," Jaishankar told Newsweek's CEO Dev Pragad in a fireside chat. First Published: July 01, 2025, 12:53 IST
