North Korea bans foreigners from seaside resort weeks after opening
The Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, opened on 1 July, has been touted as a key part of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's ambitions to boost tourism.
In the lead-up to its opening, the resort was promoted as an attraction for both locals and foreigners. But as of this week, a notice on North Korea's tourism website says that foreigners are "temporarily" not allowed to visit.
Last week, the first Russian tourists reportedly arrived at the resort in Wonsan - around the same time that Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov met Kim in the city.
Lavrov hailed the seaside development as a "good tourist attraction", and said he hoped it would become popular among Russians, AFP reported. The two countries are set to launch direct flights between Moscow and Pyongyang by the end of the month.
A Russian tour guide previously told NK News that they had planned several more trips to the resort in the coming months.
Wonsan, a city along North Korea's east coast, is home to some of the country's missile facilities and a large maritime complex. It's also where Kim spent much of his youth, among holiday villas belonging to the country's elites.
The new seaside resort has lined 4km (2.5 miles) of its beachfront with hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and a water park. It has a capacity of some 20,000 people, according to state media.
However, since the resort began construction in 2018, human rights groups have protested the alleged mistreatment of its workers. They point to reports of people being forced to work long hours to finish the massive project, under harsh conditions and inadequate compensation.
Russian ambassadors attended the resort's completion ceremony on 24 June, along with Kim and his family.
Last year, North Korea allowed Russian tourists to visit North Korea after a years-long suspension of tourism during the pandemic.
In February, North Korea also started to receive tourists from the West, including Australia, France, Germany and the UK. It abruptly halted tourism weeks later, however, without saying why.

Gabbard claims Obama officials ‘manufactured intelligence' of 2016 Russian election interference
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday released a report alleging Obama administration officials manipulated intelligence related to Russian interference in the 2016 election. Gabbard asserted in a statement that former officials engaged in a 'treasonous conspiracy' and said her office was turning over evidence to the Justice Department for possible criminal referrals 'The information we are releasing today clearly shows there was a treasonous conspiracy in 2016 committed by officials at the highest level of our government,' Gabbard said. 'Their goal was to subvert the will of the American people and enact what was essentially a years-long coup with the objective of trying to usurp the President from fulfilling the mandate bestowed upon him by the American people.' Friday's memo cites officials such as former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director Jim Comey, among others. President Trump has for years claimed the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether his campaign colluded with Moscow was a 'hoax,' targeting officials like Brennan and Comey with frequent attacks. Trump in March signed a memo ordering the declassification of 'all files related to Crossfire Hurricane,' the name given to the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The very intelligence agencies that Gabbard now oversees have long concluded that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election – an assessment that was backed by other outside entities. That includes a three-year bipartisan Senate investigation that concluded in a more than 1,300 page report that Russia was aggressive in seeking to interfere with the election on Trump's behalf, including by launching a massive social media campaign. Gabbard's memo, as well as another 114 pages of related documents, primarily rest on claims there was no indication of a Russian effort to directly manipulate the actual vote count. However, that is not at odds with the conclusion of the intelligence community or the Senate report, which determined there was 'no evidence that any votes were changed or that any voting machines were manipulated.' The Obama administration said it had seen no evidence that hackers tampered with the results. Gabbard's release was immediately panned by Intelligence Democrats, who noted that it comes amid fractures within the Trump administration over how to handle scrutiny over the Jeffrey Epstein case. 'It's a day that ends with 'y' and Donald Trump desperately wants to change the subject, so Director Gabbard is rehashing decade-old false claims about the Obama Administration. The memo also focuses on the Steele Dossier, a collection of salacious allegations about Trump's ties to Russia, some of which has been discredited. Gabbard received praise from GOP figures for the report. 'DISMANTLING THE DEEP STATE!' Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) wrote on the social media platform X. 'The Russia hoax was a political hit job manufactured by Obama officials and weaponized by intel agencies to take down President Trump. Accountability is long overdue!' However, in Democratic circles, Gabbard has been accused in this instance as well as other of tailoring intelligence to suit the needs of the administration. Warner noted that Gabbard previously called on Trump to pardon leaker Edward Snowden, who released thousands of National Security Agency documents showing the bulk collection of Americans' communications data. A historic district peppered with posh cocktail lounges and approximately a dozen area distilleries has earned it the nickname 'the bourbon capital of the world.' Tourists flock from across the globe to tour bourbon trail icons like James B. Beam Distilling Co., Willett Distillery, and Bardstown Bourbon Company. Bardstown finally has a hotel that befits its spirited reputation: The Trail Hotel, which bills itself as the world's first bourbon-themed hotel. Here's a firsthand look. The structure had been vacant for years before this stunning transformation. Although the roofline and footprint remain unchanged, there's no mistaking it for anything but an ambitiously original property. The guest rooms are perfect for one or two people, but for extra space, consider upgrading to one of the hotel's eight bourbon-themed suites, which feature separate living rooms with sofas, coffee tables, and bars (this is bourbon country, after all). Created by chef Marvin Woods, the menu fuses Low Country cuisine and Southern-style cooking with seafood sourced directly from a fishing vessel on the Gulf Coast, as well as produce, beef, and pork from local farms. Some standout dishes include the red shrimp cocktail (served deconstructed on a plate) and the prime beef tenderloin, which was tender enough to cut with a butter knife. I also loved the charred steakhouse Caesar, accompanied by a zesty house-made dressing. The restaurant also serves breakfast and lunch. After dinner, make your way to The Bourbon Vault, a speakeasy cleverly concealed behind a piece of artwork. The dim lighting, combined with leather and plush velvet furnishings, creates a posh atmosphere. The wine and spirits list is extensive, but as one might imagine, the bourbon list is a showstopper, featuring a library of rare bottles for true aficionados. Other dining and drinking options include light bites and cocktails at the poolside bar, as well as a golf simulator suite featuring a full menu. This is something The Trail considered when they conceived the hotel's most surprising amenity — the Rejuvenation Room. The space includes an oxygen bar and by-appointment IV therapy, which have long been popular hangover cures in Las Vegas. Other amenities include a sauna and a cryogenics chamber. Concierge service is not unusual at an upscale property like The Trail, but in all my travels, this is the first time I've encountered a bourbon butler. If you need help with your itinerary, a bourbon butler is available to schedule VIP tours, private barrel tastings, behind-the-scenes experiences, and flights of highly sought-after collectible bourbons.
