NBA's Malik Beasley under federal investigation over gambling allegations
NBA free agent Malik Beasley is under investigation by the US district attorney's office regarding gambling allegations tied to league games, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the matter. ESPN was the first to report on the investigation and said the allegations are believed to be related to the 2023-24 season when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks. 'We are cooperating with the federal prosecutors' investigation,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement released on Sunday. 'There have been no charges against Malik,' Steve Haney, Beasley's attorney, told the AP. 'It's just an investigation at this point. We hope people reserve judgement until he's charged – or if he's charged. It's not uncommon for there to be a federal investigation.' The probe into the 28-year-old comes 14 months after the NBA issued a lifetime ban for Toronto's Jontay Porter, who was linked to a prop bet investigation and eventually pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud. This past season, the Wall Street Journal reported that Terry Rozier – then of the Charlotte Hornets – was under investigation for activity related to unusual betting patterns surrounding him in a March 2023 game. Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime, nor has he faced any sanction from the NBA. Porter's ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and 'prop bets' – wagers where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. The Porter investigation started once the league learned about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter's performance in a game in March 2024. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to the game and said that another individual – known to be an NBA bettor – placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1m. US sports leagues have also come under criticism for promoting gambling during games, while simultaneously applying heavy punishments to players found guilty of betting. Beasley signed last year with the Pistons, taking a one-year contract for $6m in the hopes of cashing in this summer as a free agent. A second person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because no deal was announced, said Detroit was 'very interested' in re-signing Beasley to a multi-year contract – which ESPN reported to be worth $42m – this summer. Those talks may be in jeopardy, given the uncertainty regarding the federal probe. He has $59.5m in career earnings. Beasley made a single-season, franchise-record 319 three-pointers in the regular season. He helped Detroit make the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and end an NBA-record 15-game postseason losing streak in the first round against the New York Knicks. Beasley averaged 16.3 points last season and has averaged 11.7 points over his career with Denver, Minnesota, Utah, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Detroit. He scored a career-high 19.6 points a game during the 2020-21 season with the Timberwolves. The Atlanta native played at Florida State and the Nuggets drafted him No 19 overall in 2016.

Police rescue emaciated newborn baby from Phoenix apartment days after its mother died
An 'emaciated' baby survived several days alone in a Phoenix, Arizona, apartment after the infant's mother died, authorities said. Shocking bodycam footage released by the Phoenix Police Department shows the newborn clinging to life after officers broke down the door while performing a welfare check on May 14. Authorities forced down the front door of the home after an observant neighbor called 911 to ask for a welfare check as the woman 'had recently given birth to a baby, and had not been seen or heard from for several days,' Phoenix police said in a news release. Bodycam footage shows an officer peering into the home through an open window and telling the other first responders, 'The baby's here, dude.' And the baby's still alive.' While looking through the window, officers also spotted the mother lying 'motionless on the floor.' Police then broke down the door and retrieved the 'visibly emaciated' baby was lying on a nearby bed, police said in the release. "Officers rushed to the front door and forced it open," Sergeant Brian Bower said in the news release. "Officers swiftly rescued the infant and met with Phoenix Fire personnel, who took the child to the hospital in serious condition." Police said the baby's health has since improved, and they are expected to make a 'full recovery' after receiving 'lifesaving care.' Bower praised the actions of the officers, telling KPHO, 'It's because of the smart, immediate actions of the officers as well as the neighbors seeing something unusual and calling in for help.' 'It wasn't learned until well after the fact from doctors and staff at the hospital that if the police officers didn't immediately provide aide and didn't immediately go into the apartment, the child may not have survived much longer,' he added. Authorities are still investigating the cause and manner of death for the mother, according to the news release. The Department of Child Safety is also helping investigators and the child's family.

Skip Bayless slams 'sellout' Tom Brady for 'kissing LeBron James' a**' in latest bizarre rant
Skip Bayless' latest bizarre rant has dropped, with two of his favorite targets in his crosshairs again, with him accusing Tom Brady of 'kissing LeBron James a**'. Bayless took exception with LeBron James' live episode of 'The Shop' that took place during Fanatics Fest in New York City last weekend. Brady was one of James' guests, with the compliments between two of America's greatest sportsmen too much for the 73-year-old to bare. 'Tell me I'm wrong about this, LeBron James just can't help himself. He, just can't hide his runaway insecurity,' Bayless began. 'Over knowing deep, deep down that he will never ever be seen as the greatest basketball player ever, by those who really know the game, by anyone who really matters.' 'And yeah, I know that over the weekend Tom Brady called LeBron James the greatest ever while sitting up on stage with LeBron at the Fanatics Fest in New York City. What a sellout Tom Brady has become post-football off the field, and he was undoubtedly the greatest football player ever on the field.' 'All-time great clutch competitor, Tom Brady, but man, when it comes to maximizing his money, Tom Brady will say and do whatever is required to polish his good guy image. He loves everybody and everybody loves Tom Brady. And he even kissed LeBron's a** in front of LeBron because he knows how many billions of followers, how many fans LeBron has, and what a powerful financial alliance he could form with the King post football, probably post basketball for LeBron.' 'So, Tom Brady rather pathetically said of LeBron in front of LeBron to the Fanatics Fest crowd, the live audience, and here's the quote, "He's always done things the right way. He's always risen above the noise and the BS and continued to deliver. So you're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you guys appreciate that."' Bayless has been a vocal critic of James throughout his NBA career and been in a tiff with Brady over the last several weeks. Earlier this week, Bayless left fans baffled with a rant about the NBA Draft and white basketball players - referencing himself as a 'reverse racist'. 'Cooper Flagg will be the best white American player since Larry Bird,' Bayless said. 'I'm not saying that I'm seeing Larry Bird [in Flagg], not yet, because I've never seen anything like Larry Bird when it came to clutch gene, basketball genius IQ, killer will, defiant arrogant trash-talking confidence, all-time great leadership right up there with Michael Jordan 's, Magic Johnson 's. 'So is it fair for me to compare white American player to white American player? Well if you followed my career, when it came to basketball - I have been painfully honest about this - I have never ever had much respect, much use for, white American players.' From there, the conversation veered further off-course and Bayless began to speak about the issue of racism. 'In fact,' he claimed, 'many many many times over my career I've been called reverse racist... but, come on, show me a white American player remotely close to Larry Bird since he retired in 1992. 'Cooper Flagg is 6'9
