Men found guilty of Jason De Ieso murder have convictions overturned

Seven men who were given life sentences for the murder of Adelaide man Jason De Ieso will face a retrial after having their convictions overturned on appeal.
The men — who were each either members or close associates of the Hells Angels — had been found guilty of murder after a five-month trial in 2023.
The court had heard Mr De Ieso was the accidental victim of a feud between the Hells Angels and rival gang the Finks when he was shot dead at his Pooraka crash repair workshop in November 2012.
The Court of Appeal today allowed the appeal and ordered each of the men face a retrial at a date not yet set.

A man has been charged with murder following the discovery of the body of missing man Joshua Bishop in Melbourne's northwest. Sunbury man Joshua Bishop, 23, was last seen by his housemates on May 27 and was reported missing by his parents two days later. Police described the man's disappearance as 'completely out of character' and 'suspicious' and launched an investigation. Police discovered human remains belonging to Mr Bishop during a raid on a Erinbank Crescent, Westmeadows home on Saturday. Police arrested a 27-year-old Westmeadows man on Saturday and he was on Sunday charged with Mr Bishop's murder. He is due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday. Mr Bishop's body was found approximately 32km from his Sunbury home. The front yard of the Westmeadows property was cordoned off with police tape while officers examined the scene on Saturday. Forensic officers were later seen wheeling his remains out of the house before loading it into the police vehicle, flanked by forensic officers, police and paramedics. His phone and bank accounts had not been accessed since May 27, and his phone last pinged at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Barry Rd.

‘Not worth it': Melbourne cafe closes after seven months following violent attack

It's buzzing cafe in Melbourne's inner city that opened just seven months ago, with locals raving about how great the coffee is. However, the co-owners of Eleven: 11 cafe on Buckley Street in Footscray say they have decided to close its doors after a shocking attack and noticing a general trend of a spike in drug use and street violence in the area. Horrifying CCTV from inside the cafe shows the attack on the morning of June 20. A hooded man can be seen approaching cafe owner Moustafa Saoud, who was behind the counter of his shop. Mr Saoud was then punched in the face and kicked in the legs. The attacker had allegedly entered the cafe twice earlier that morning to ask for a cigarette. On his second visit, the man was refused a cigarette and on the third time he carried out the attack. Mr Saoud told Nine News he no longer feels safe. 'It's not worth it, to lose my life for,' he said. 'I'm not gonna be safe anymore.' 'It's not safe,' brother and business partner Alex Saoud agreed. Locals, who are fed up with violence and drug-use in the area, say they are devastated that the cafe is closing. 'He made the best coffee in Melbourne, and I'll stand by that,' one local said. Victoria Police has been contacted for comment about the June 20 cafe incident. Police told Nine News there are daily patrols around Footscray to prevent drug offending and antisocial behaviour.

Greens candidate charged after being injured in protest

Former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas has been charged by police after she suffered graphic injuries during a pro-Palestine protest outside a Sydney business. Ms Thomas was photographed with a damaged left eye with streaks of dry blood caked onto her cheek in the wake of the protest outside SEC Plating in Belmore in Sydney's southwest on Friday. Protesters picketed the company because of reports it provides components in jets which is used by the Israeli Defence Force, the NSW Greens said in a statement. NSW Police attempted to disperse the group, stating the protest was not authorised, and issued a move-on order to 60 protesters. 'As police attempted to arrest the protesters who were not complying with the directions, a scuffle ensued between police and protesters,' NSW Police said in a statement. Police previously charged four people with a variety of offences. On Sunday Ms Thomas was issued by police with a future court attendance notice and charged with hinder/resist police and refuse/fail to comply with direction to disperse. She will appear in Bankstown Local Court on August 12. Ms Thomas challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler at the election earlier this year. A photo taken after the incident showed Ms Thomas standing next to an officer with visible swelling around her eye. Ms Thomas underwent surgery and remained in hospital on Sunday. The Greens said in a statement on Friday that NSW Police had 'violently attacked and assaulted protesters' at the 'peaceful picket … leaving one woman with serious facial injuries and arresting multiple demonstrators'. 'SEC Plating reportedly is involved in providing plating services for various parts used in F-35 jets,' the statement said. 'The State of Israel's fleet of around 40 F-35 rely on the global supply chain and supplement supply from countries like Australia to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people.' The Greens said Peter O'Brien Lawyers has been engaged to represent Ms Thomas and other protesters.
