This move of the company which aims to enhance the security has started discussions about the privacy of the employees. Elon Musk's AI startup xAI ask employees to install 'spy software' on their laptops
According to a report by Business Insider, Elon Musk's AI startup has asked the employees training Grok to download and install a workforce management system called Hubstaff. This monitoring toll is designed to keep track of employee activity including keystrokes, screen activity, and application usage.
The company has not yet revealed the exact reason behind this new policy, but it is speculated to be a response to the highly competitive and sensitive nature of AI development, where intellectual property and data security are paramount.
Initially, the directive applied to all employees, regardless of whether they had company-issued laptops, with a July 11 deadline for compliance. Later the company asked the employees using their personal devices to either purchase a new device using the xAI $50 per month tech stipend or create different profiles to separate their work from personal browsing.

The company's HR team said that the new software would help the company in streamlining the work process and will also offer better insights into daily tutoring activities. 'This new tool serves to streamline work processes, provide clearer insights into daily tutoring activities, and ensure resources align with Human Data priorities," the company's human resources team said in a mass email to employees.
However, the employees feel that the new monitoring tool is 'surveillance disguised as productivity'.
The report further adds that apart from Hubstaff, xAI also uses HR manager Rippling to clock the hours of workers. Along with this, the company's in-house system Starfleet tracks the amount of time the tutors spent on each task.
Elon Musk's xAI apologises for what 'happened on July 8
Meanwhile, it has been a tough time for xAI. The Elon Musk-owned company apologised 'for the horrific behaviour that many experienced' for 16 hours, starting on July 8. Through the official Grok account on X (formerly Twitter), the AI company said that 'the update was to provide helpful and truthful responses to users' but it spit out responses which 'contained extremist views.'
xAI has also provided an explanation on what went wrong. It said that the incident stemmed from a July code update that activated deprecated instructions, causing Grok to reflect extremist views from X posts for 16 hours, a vulnerability not anticipated despite pre-release testing, as revealed by xAI's investigation.

Reliance Retail acquires home appliances brand Kelvinator

Reliance Retail MUMBAI: Reliance Retail has acquired home appliances brand Kelvinator for India from Sweden's Electrolux as it looks to expand market share in the consumer durables space, stepping up competition against global and local giants such as Samsung and Tata's Voltas in the market. Reliance Retail has already been holding manufacturing and distribution rights for the brand in India since 2019 through a licensing deal signed with its Swedish owner. The company did not disclose the financial specifics of the deal. In an earnings update, Electrolux, however, said that it has realised a gain of about $18.5 million (around Rs 160 crore) from the divestment of the Kelvinator brand in India. A licensing deal is typically signed for a certain period of time; a full acquisition expands a company's scope and coverage for the brand. Kelvinator which sells a range of premium refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners had first entered India in 1960s and became popular in the local market in the 1970s and 80s before competition in the space intensified. The brand has had a chequered history in India—Whirlpool for India had acquired the brand in 1995 to gain access to the refrigerator category and later it went on to get acquired by Videocon Industries in the mid 2000s, eventually being relaunched by Reliance Retail in 2019. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Reliance Retail already sells Kelvinator products through Reliance Digital stores, e-commerce platforms and its general trade partners. Flexible payment schemes and EMI plans offered by brands have fuelled appetite for premium consumer durables, broadening the customer base for the segment. Reliance Retail said that it will leverage its vast retail network and Kelvinator's expertise in innovation to boost its growth in the premium home appliances market. 'The acquisition of Kelvinator marks a pivotal moment, enabling us to significantly broaden our offering of trusted global innovations to Indian consumers. Tata Sons sets up RS 500 crore AI-171 Memorial Trust for Air India crash victims

Tata Sons has formally set up a public charitable trust — The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust — to support the victims and families affected by the tragic Air India AI-171 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad. The group has pledged a total of Rs 500 crore towards the trust, with Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, headed by Noel Tata, contributing Rs 250 crore each. The trust will provide financial and rehabilitation support, including a Rs 1 crore ex-gratia payment to the families of the deceased, medical assistance to those seriously injured, and aid for rebuilding the B.J. Medical College hostel, which was damaged during the crash. The horrific incident, which occurred on June 12, claimed the lives of 241 out of the 242 passengers on board, as well as several individuals on the ground. 'The Trust will be funded and will commence its work in all earnestness after necessary registration with the tax authorities and other operational formalities, currently underway, are completed,' it said in a statement. The Trust will provide both immediate and continuing support to the dependents/next-of-kin of the deceased, to those who were injured, and to all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident. Importantly, the trust will also extend support to first responders, medical teams, disaster relief workers, and government personnel who played key roles in the rescue and recovery operations following the crash. This includes assistance to address trauma, mental health challenges, and other distress these individuals may have experienced in the course of their service. The AI-171 Trust has been formally registered in Mumbai and will be governed by a five-member board. The first two trustees named are S. Padmanabhan, a long-serving Tata Group veteran, and Sidharth Sharma, General Counsel at Tata Sons. The remaining trustees will be appointed shortly. Commenting shortly after the tragedy, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, who also chairs Air India, had spoken of the need for long-term care beyond financial help. 'There are structures we want to put in place. One of the things we've been thinking about is creating a trust — something sustainable that can support affected families,' he said. Meanwhile, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has stated that the preliminary findings into the AI-171 crash have opened up more questions than answers, indicating that the investigation remains ongoing and complex. The AI-171 Trust represents a significant and compassionate effort by the Tata Group to support recovery and rebuild lives after one of India's worst aviation disasters.
