Sensex ends 721 points lower, Nifty below 24,900; Bajaj Finance falls 5%

Benchmark stock indices ended sharply lower on Thursday, extending their losing streak amid a surge in market volatility and weak global S&P BSE Sensex dropped 721.08 points to close at 81,463.09, while the NSE Nifty50 fell 225.10 points to settle at 24,837. Broader market indices also came under heavy selling pressure, with small-cap and mid-cap stocks witnessing steeper losses. Volatility surged through the session, exacerbating the weakness across Nifty50 constituents, Cipla, SBI Life, Apollo Hospitals, Dr Reddy's, and Sun Pharma ended as the top gainers. On the flip side, Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Auto, and Tech Mahindra were the biggest laggards. According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, 'Subdued corporate results and lacklustre global cues triggered a broad-based sell-off across domestic equities. Elevated valuations in large-cap stocks, coupled with significant net short positions held by FIIs, added to the downward pressure.'He added that sentiment remained fragile amid ongoing uncertainty over U.S.-India tariff negotiations and the European Central Bank's decision to hold interest rates steady. 'Moderation in DII inflows after strong buying over the last 2–3 months, combined with a muted earnings season and persistent FII selling, continues to impact the market,' Nair Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, echoed the cautious tone, noting that the market remained under pressure through the day due to earnings disappointments. 'Nifty slipped below its immediate support at 24,900 and settled at 24,837. Sectorally, most indices ended in the red, with energy, metal, and auto being the top losers,' he also flagged the broader market weakness, with the Nifty midcap and smallcap indices falling between 1.63% and 2.16%. 'The recent correction reflects growing concerns around earnings disappointments and cautious management commentary, which are weighing heavily on investor confidence. Additionally, continued selling by FIIs is exacerbating the pressure,' Mishra the Nifty now below 24,900, he pegs immediate support at 24,700, with a more significant base in the 24,450–24,550 zone. 'Traders are advised to align their positions with the prevailing trend and refrain from averaging down on loss-making trades,' Mishra added.(Disclaimer: The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. Economy: India and the United Kingdom have signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), marking a major step toward strengthening bilateral economic ties. The agreement was signed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds, in the presence of Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Rishi Sunak. This milestone reflects a shared commitment to deeper economic integration between two major global economies. India-UK bilateral trade stands at nearly USD 56 billion, with a target to double it by 2030. CETA grants duty-free access for 99% of Indias exports to the UK, benefitting labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, marine products, footwear, sports goods, toys, and gems & jewelry, along with high-growth sectors like engineering goods, auto components, and organic chemicals. Gainers & Losers: SBI Life Insurance Company (up 2.26%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (up 1.09%), HDFC Life Insurance Company (up 0.98%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (up 0.93%) and UltraTech Cement (up 0.76%) were the major Nifty50 gainers. Shriram Finance (down 4.57%), Bajaj Finance (down 4.67%), Bajaj Finserv (down 3.55%), IndusInd Bank (down 2.75%) and Bajaj Auto (down 2.27%) were the major Nifty50 losers. Global Markets: European shares opened lower on Friday, giving back gains from the previous session, as automobile stocks weighed and investors awaited updates on EU-U.S. trade talks ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff deadline next week. Asian markets came off their early highs on Friday, with Japanese markets retreating from a record peak, as investors locked in profits ahead of a crucial week that includes US President Donald Trump's tariff deadline and a host of central bank meetings. Mixed inflation data, however, dampened the sentiment for Japanese investors. Tokyo consumer inflation data for July showed a slightly bigger-than-widely anticipated easing in prices. But core inflation still remained above the Bank of Japans 2% annual target, keeping uncertainty over the central banks rate hikes largely in play. Focus now is on Chinas Politburo meeting, a convening of top political leaders, for more cues on the Chinese economy. The meeting was supposed to be convened in late July. US stocks were mixed on Thursday, with the S&P 500 notching its fourth record close in a row as tech earnings from Alphabet pointed to AI as a key growth catalyst. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.2% to also close at a fresh record, while the S&P 500 ended up just 0.1% higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.6% amid a post-earnings slide in IBM (IBM) shares. Alphabet beat widely reported markets second-quarter earnings expectations and doubled down on its AI spending spree. The Google parent's shares rose alongside other AI-linked stocks such as Nvidia, helping buoy the tech-focused gauges. Tesla's stock sank after an earnings miss, a continued slump in European sales, and a warning from CEO Elon Musk that the EV maker faced "rough quarters" as President Trump's budget bill killed off tax credits. Optimism around trade deals remained strong after the US-Japan agreement helped push the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite to new record highs on Wednesday. Meanwhile, media reports indicated that the US and EU are nearing a deal to impose a 15% tariff on most European importssignificantly lower than the previously threatened 30%.

S&P affirms Bangladesh's sovereign credit rating, warns of US trade risks

S&P Global Ratings has affirmed Bangladesh's long-term sovereign credit ratings at 'B+' and short-term ratings at 'B', saying the country's external liquidity is stabilising. However, it flagged heightened trade risk from US tariffs. The outlook is stable. Bangladesh's macroeconomic policies over the past 18 months — transitioning to a more flexible exchange rate regime, allowing the taka to depreciate, and tightening monetary policy — have helped it rebuild foreign exchange liquidity, said the agency. Official foreign exchange reserves have improved, but Bangladesh faces heightened trade risk from 'relatively high' US tariffs. Bangladesh's external profile is stabilising after a period of elevated pressure. Foreign exchange reserves increased by about $5 billion in FY25 to $26.7 billion now, marking a notable recovery from lows below $20 billion. Reserves cover about 4.1 months of current account payments, compared with 3.3 months at the end of FY24. Elections proposed in the first half of 2026 are likely to be critical for lasting political stability after the abrupt collapse of the Awami League government in July 2024. "Bangladesh's volatile political situation may stymie the predictability of policy responses", said S&P Global. A caretaker government led by Muhammad Yunus acts in lieu of an elected government. The Awami League has been banned from all political activities, and the caretaker government has tentatively slated elections for April 2026, S&P said. The stable outlook on Bangladesh reflects the view that its real growth rate per capita will remain 'very strong' compared with those of its peers. 'The downside and upside risks to its external balance sheet are now broadly balanced. This is despite headwinds in the next 12-18 months stemming from external trade conditions,' S&P said. The 'B+' long-term rating reflects the economy's modest per capita income and limited fiscal flexibility due to a combination of low revenue-generation capacity and the government's high interest burden. Evolving administrative and institutional settings represent additional rating constraints. 'We weigh these factors against the Bangladesh economy's strong long-term growth rate and the government's moderate debt burden.' The country's credit profile also derives support from aspects like increasing external financial support, stemming from deep engagement with bilateral and multilateral development partners, and consistent remittances from overseas Bangladeshi workers. Export receipts from Bangladesh's globally competitive garment manufacturing sector also provide support to the country's credit profile, said S&P.
