Kullu again: Heavy rain triggers landslide in Sainj valley, villagers evacuated

Shimla: With incessant rain leading to a landslide on a hill behind Duridhar village in Sainj valley of Kullu district on Saturday, the district administration evacuated 20 inhabitants of 11 houses in the village to a transit camp.
Kullu deputy commissioner Torul S Raveesh said that the administration is carrying out the technical assessment of the area affected by the landslide. She added that the affected villagers were shifted to a transit camp at the nearby public works department's rest house. As many as 213 roads, including two national highways, were closed for vehicular traffic on Saturday evening in Himachal Pradesh. The two blocked national highways include NH-70 Mandi-Kotali road and NH-305 Luhri-Nither road, which were blocked due to landslides.
Besides this, a total of 31 power distribution transformers and 141 water supply schemes were also affected across the state on Saturday evening, as per the state emergency operation centre (SEOC).
As many as 82 people in the hill state lost their lives, and 34 still remain missing from June 20 to July 26 because of monsoon-related incidents. The Himalayan state witnessed as many as 25 cloudbursts, 42 flash floods, and 32 landslides during this monsoon period, which resulted in Rs 1,438 crore accumulated loss.

Till Saturday evening, the water level of all the 25 dams across the state was within the permissible operational limits, as per the SEOC. The weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Kullu districts on July 29. On July 27 and 28, the meteorological department predicted heavy rain at isolated places, mainly in Sirmaur, Kangra, and Una districts.
Mandi, Shimla, and Hamirpur districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places on July 28.

A boulder slammed on a car near Gallu Dagri village in Sunni area around 11am on Sunday, crushing it and grievously injuring its three occupants. They were taken to hospital where Lekhraj, 37, was declared dead. The two others are under treatment. The previous night, JCB operator Dinesh, 55, was working an excavator machine to clear a landslide on NH-5 when the land suddenly gave way under him. He and the machine plunged over 300 metres in Kumarsain area on Saturday evening. Around 100 metres into the gorge, he was flung out of the machine and killed instantly. Battered by relentless rain and cloudbursts, the state has suffered losses worth nearly Rs 1715 crore. Around 300 roads remained blocked on Sunday, and power and water supply were disrupted in many areas of Himachal Pradesh. A flash flood washed away a bridge connecting Lahaul Spiti with Chamba district early Sunday morning. Besides cutting off the Pangi region of Chamba, the lack of road connectivity directly impacted hundreds of residents of Tindi and Salgran panchayats, where crops are ready for harvesting. The Chandigarh-Manali highway was also closed for around an hour after a landslide and rockfall at Jogini Mod near Pandoh. Moderate rain and thunder showers are expected to take place in these districts, which can cause waterlogging, leading to traffic congestion. BHOPAL: As many as 252 people have lost their lives due to heavy rains, floods, lightning strikes, and related mishaps during the ongoing monsoon in Madhya Pradesh, according to the latest official data. The fatalities include 47 people who died directly due to heavy rainfall, 132 who were swept away by swollen rivers and streams, 60 struck by lightning, and 13 others killed in incidents involving collapsing trees and houses. Animals too have borne the brunt of the deluge. At least 432 animals—mostly milch cattle—and around 1,200 poultry perished in the flood-hit areas. The incessant rainfall also caused the complete collapse of 128 houses and partially damaged 2,333 others across the state. Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Sunday said that 3,628 people have been safely rescued by combined teams of the Indian Army, NDRF, State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), police and home guards. Of these, 3,065 are currently sheltered in 53 relief camps. So far, a total of Rs 28.49 crore has been disbursed as immediate relief to affected families across various districts. The state government has sanctioned a total of Rs 3,600 crore for ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
