Ms Alley did say despite missing out, having a round of racing in the South Island was great for those in Central Otago who would like to go watch Supercars as Christchurch was not too far to travel to.
Supercars organisers had approached the Central Otago District Council for $250,000 to help secure the event, and the proposal for funding was presented to the public as part of the council's long-term plan consultation document.
Ms Alley said the feedback from the public as part of the consultation was not in favour of granting Supercars funds.
"But a lot of that was around people just thinking that Supercars kind of had enough money."
If Supercars was to make a similar request in the future about having a round in Central Otago, the council would be open to seeing what people could bring to the area, the mayor said.
"I guess every conversation is an opportunity for a new start. So we'll wait and see what the future might bring."
Ms Alley said she believed there would be future opportunities, if not for Supercars then another type of event.
"We know that they do bring benefits for our communities, but also not every event is going to be the right fit for us.
"So I guess we'll look at things on a case-by-case basis as they crop up," she said.
Cromwell Community Board member Wally Sanford said missing out on Supercars meant that the council, in the short term, had been spared some difficult discussions on financial priorities for the district.
"Now is a good time to reconsider how our tourism money should be gathered and spent, and what tourism markets or ventures we as a district should be focusing on," he said.
Tourism Central Otago head of destination Anthony Longman said Central Otago hosting the Supercars would have brought the region direct positive economic benefits, as well as a wide range of non-economic benefits.
"Attracting an event at the size and scale of Supercars could have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to Cromwell, Central Otago and our neighbouring regions," Mr Longman said.
It was estimated an event like Supercars could have brought in over $20 million in economic benefit to the wider Central Otago district, he said.

Supercars Drives Boost For Taupō District
The ITM Taupō Super 440 leg of the Repco Supercars Championship in April 2025 brought a multi-million dollar boost to the local economy. Taupō once again shone on the global stage with over 51,000 fans in attendance at Taupō International Motorsport Park and community events over the race weekend. Visitors accounted for over 36,000 room nights, with thousands of people travelling from Australia and across New Zealand. While the full economic data is still being finalised, early indications suggest the event once again delivered a multi-million dollar benefit for the Taupō region. The event placed a strong emphasis on sustainability and community values, reflected in the Track to Town event, vibrant storefront displays, and free park-and-ride buses that helped remove thousands of vehicles from the roads. Sustainability efforts extended to waste management, with Closed Loop Environmental Solutions sorting over 250 cubic metres of waste during the race weekend. Separated glass and plastics, aluminium cans, and cardboard were diverted away from landfill and about 38 cubic metres of organic material was processed locally into vermicast by My Noke. Taupō District is widely known as a destination for domestic and international tourism, and Taupō District Council events and venues manager Steve Giles said the success of this year's Supercars helps cement the district's place on the international stage. 'Supercars is a sporting event like nothing else. We enjoy working with them and it gives us a chance to show to the world not only our unique culture and hospitality, but what a place like Taupō can achieve' he said. Almost 3000 media reports mentioned the event, reaching a cumulative audience of over 70 million people, while television audiences across 128 countries reached a cumulative average audience of over 1.1 million viewers. In partnership with the Tauhara Hapū collective, local culture and heritage was prominent, with a haka on the grid prior to the first race. Local musician Tyree Wall sang the national anthem. Taupō artist Delani Brown's hand-carved trophies were formally blessed and gifted to Supercars during the pōwhiri at Te Ātea – Tapuaeharuru on Taupō's lakefront. Taupō District Council's district events manager Sinead Vincent says the post-event report and figures reflect the immense effort behind the scenes, with the economic impact alone not to be underestimated. 'Local businesses and the community truly stepped up. Volunteers aged from 18 to 80 turned out in force to help make the event weekend a huge success. 'The benefits will ripple across the whole district, and the community should be proud of what has been accomplished,' she said. Supercars racing in Taupō has been guaranteed until 2028 and the Repco Supercars Championship will return in 2026 with its first-ever trans-island double header. Taupō will host Supercars from 10 to 12 April before they make their South Island debut at Ruapuna Raceway, Christchurch from 17 to 19 April 2026.

Nascar: Shane van Gisbergen makes it back-to-back Cup race wins

Photo: AFP Kiwi motor racing ace Shane van Gisbergen has won back-to-back victories in the Nascar Cup Series, with a strong win at Sonoma Raceway in California. The three-time Supercars champion backed up his win in the Chicago Street Race last weekend with the Sonoma triumph. Van Gisbergen, 36, hasn't won an oval track this year but has won the last three road course races - in Mexico City, Chicago and Sonoma. Those three wins put him equal with Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell for most victories this season. Van Gisbergen started in pole position and led in his No 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet for 97 of the 110 laps at Sonoma, withstanding interruptions from a flurry of late caution periods before powering away late in the race. He won by 1.128 seconds ahead of Chase Briscoe. "That was pretty tough stuff. We had an amazing car," van Gisbergen said. "I had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that. "Now we need to keep getting better on the ovals and start proving some people wrong. "I had an amazing time in Australia and then to come here… the last couple of weeks or years actually has been a dream come true." The Cup Series heads to Dover in Delaware this weekend. Waitaki's water move might not comply, partners warn
Waitaki's former southern council partners have fired a warning after its decision to quit the group and go it alone on water services. Waitaki district councillors today voted to exit the Southern Water Done Well partnership, cutting the district loose from Clutha, Central Otago and Gore. In its place the district will instead pursue an in-house water services delivery unit. The decision comes after the Department of Internal Affairs said joining a four-way, multi-district water company was the "only viable option" for the district. The proposed partnership would have united the four councils' water services into a single regional organisation, with a shared cost of $13.8 million for establishment. Central Otago mayor Tamah Alley, Gore mayor Ben Bell and Clutha mayor Bryan Cadogan said in a statement after the vote the government had been clear about its expectations for council collaboration. 'When considering next steps, councils will need to be mindful of whether alternative options comply with Government regulations and expectations.' The trio acknowledged councils had to make decisions in the best interests of their communities but said a jointly-owned water company remained the best option. 'The government has been quite clear about its expectations for councils to work together to deliver Local Water Done Well legislation. 'Southern Water Done Well meets those expectations and sets a strategic, long-term direction for delivering financially sustainable, efficient water services while retaining local control." Clutha and Central Otago district councils meet this Thursday to decide their water services delivery model, while Gore District Council's meeting is on Monday. Public consultation across the four councils drew in over 1000 submission with the in-house business unit model the preferred option in Waitaki (54%) and Clutha, while only 26.7% supported the joint entity, most popular in Gore and Central Otago. Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher said after today's decision the council would focus on an in-house water business unit for the next two years at least, subject to the DIA reviewing and approving the plan. "I'd like to thank the community for sharing their opinion, the councillors for their consideration of this important topic, our officers for the hard work they've put in over the last 12 months, and our partner councils in the Southern Water Done Well group,' he said in a statement.
