This beloved Soho pub is closing for good
Another London boozer bites the dust.
Soho pub The Shaston Arms will be shutting its doors on June 15. In a statement, brewers Hall & Woodhouse said, 'We are disappointed that after 25 wonderful years, we are sadly saying goodbye to The Shaston Arms in Carnaby. Our wish was to renew the lease on the building, but we understand that the landlord wishes to pursue a restaurant offer on Ganton Street.'
Though it looked like a Victorian-era pub, The Shaston Arms actually opened in 1999, and was previously a pair of shops. Run by Dorset-based brewers Hall & Woodhouse, the name 'Shaston' was taken from the Shaftesbury-inspired town present in a number of novels by Dorset-born writer Thomas Hardy.
A number of other Hall & Woodhouse pubs in London remain, including the famous Ship and Shovell by Embankment, which is split across two buildings facing each other that are joined by an underground cellar.
Earlier this year another much-loved London pub closed, north-west London's Ye Olde Swiss Cottage.

Deluxe Diner has been offering the festival's fine dining experience for more than ten years and was back this year, serving a two or three-course lunch and dinner as well as Sunday roast. The pop-up diner at Glastonbury Diners need to book months in advance and choose their dishes, which this year included starters of lightly cured Scottish salmon, with chopped spring onion, a chilli and ginger dressing, and broad bean and Dorset wasabi puree; and slow braised pigs cheek, served with a ham hock croquette, chicory and burnt apple. There were mains including roasted Sussex chicken breast, Tunworth cheese potato puree, braised leeks and apple cider jus, and Scottish halibut, cuttlefish and white bean casserole, braised baby gem and ink aioli. Finally for dessert you could choose from black forest gateaux, buttermilk pudding with strawberries, elderflower and gooseberry fool, and Jamaican ginger cake. There are diner style booths for two at the back of the tent. Given the popularity of experiential dining, could we see a fine dining pop up at a Scottish music festival? Chef and restaurateur Dean Banks thinks so, saying: 'Yes I feel we would do something like this. Trends have changed, events are on the up and I feel everyone is looking for quality products when having a nice day out. "For example I feel selling lobster rolls at Glastonbury would be mega and we would sell absolute thousands of them. You can see even down in Cornwall chefs like Paul Ainsworth and Tom Kerridge have food trucks. Food trucks and shacks are trending and I feel more great chefs should get on board with it.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad While food at festivals has come on leaps and bounds in recent years – Scotland's biggest music festival, TRNSMT, will play host to an array of street food offerings including Dirty Bird Fried Chicken, smash burgers, fish and chips, and wood fired pizza – I think they're missing a trick in not adding a pop-up restaurant to their line-up. At the Street Food Festival in Glasgow, which launched in 2017, Scottish restaurant Ardnamurchan ran a pop-up in a shipping container serving a restaurant style meal in a festival setting, and it was a huge success.

Chris McCausland and Alexander Armstrong visit Abergavenny pub
The Skirrid Mountain Inn is famous for being one of the oldest pubs in Wales and among the most haunted places in the world. The Abergavenny-based pub is described by visitors as "absolutely fantastic" and boasts a 4.2 (out of 5) rating on Tripadvisor from 410 reviews. The Skirrid Inn is so popular, it has even played host to several celebrities over the years, including the likes of Martin Clunes (Doc Martin). The Skirrid Inn plays host to Strictly and Pointless stars Now, the Skirrid Inn has welcomed Strictly Come Dancing winner Chris McCausland and Pointless host Alexander Armstrong. The pair were spotted at the pub on Sunday (June 29). The Skirrid Inn, posted a picture of Armstrong and McCausland with the staff on Facebook with the caption: "Lovely to have Alexander Armstrong & chris mccausland visit us today, true gentlemen (with a beer and walking boot emoji)." It appears Armstrong and McCausland were at the pub for the filming of the Channel 4 show Perfect Pub Walks. RECOMMENDED READING: The show is usually hosted by comedian and TV presenter Bill Bailey, although it is unclear whether or not he was also at the Skirrid Inn over the weekend. Another Facebook post from the pub, just hours before the picture of Armstrong and McCausland, said: "Please note that there may be some disruption in the beer garden today due to filming of Perfect Pub Walks, we are still open for food and drinks as normal. Thank you!" The Skirrid Mountain Inn has been contacted for comment.

THE clock is ticking towards 2.30am on Sunday, and I'm standing in a VIP boozer at Glastonbury watching Davina McCall throwing shapes on the dancefloor. Although that may be because he was tucked away wearing a grey jumper with his shades on, locking lips for 12 seconds with a frizzy-haired young woman. I captured the passionate moment on camera after my colleague and I spotted former One Direction singer Harry, 31, shuffling into the bar moments earlier. They had arrived separately but seemed to already be well-acquainted. Might this have been going on for longer, or was it just a Glastonbury romance? Time will tell. I saw them holding hands as they made their way to the dancefloor, where they partied discreetly with the music pumping, before kissing and then going their separate ways for the evening. The bar itself - the name of which I'll keep a secret - is full of bright lights while the dance area is just a tiny, dark room. It has a cool vibe and is one of the most popular haunts among celebs. Most importantly, it has plenty of booze and good tunes to keep them going. There are certainly more luxurious VIP areas on Worthy Farm, though, and all of them are swarming with A-listers. I'm fortunate enough to get access to these places through my job. Harry Styles Lights Up Glastonbury Dancing and Hugging Fans Everywhere! And one of the things that strikes me most about this weird and wonderful festival is that so many of those stars can party all day and night without even being spotted. Even when it is supermodel Cara Delevingne, who was walking around Silvers Bar in the hospitality area in a Robbie Williams-inspired bright red Adidas tracksuit on Sunday night. Or Hollywood star Paul Mescal and his American singer girlfriend Gracie Abrams - who performed on the Other Stage on Friday - out raving in one tent in the early hours. There was one moment when I was sitting on a bench outside Silvers Bar, sipping a cider and people watching, when I turned around to see Davina and her pals had perched themselves alongside me. Many celebs will stop for selfies with fans, some won't. I had actually bumped into Harry on Friday evening, chatting away to lots of people and shaking their hands. I thought I would ask him for a quick selfie to add to the Glastonbury scrapbook. He replied, in the most polite tone: "Do you mind if we don't?" Harry then asked for my name and shook my hand before continuing with his evening. It was only a very brief encounter, but he was one of the most well-mannered and charming celebs I have met. You can see why fans - and no doubt the woman he was kissing - adore him. He has got it all: the looks, the style, the talent and personality. This was Harry's first time at Glastonbury, but hopefully it will not be his last. Next year is a fallow year, so roll on 2027.
