Italian Coop supermarkets to stop selling Israeli products in solidarity with Gaza
An Italian supermarket chain says it has stopped selling Israeli products in solidarity with Palestinians affected by war and hunger in the Gaza Strip.
The decision, announced on Tuesday and the first for a major Italian food retailer, will mean that the Coop Alleanza 3.0 will remove Israeli peanuts, tahini sauce and SodaStream carbonated water makers from its shelves, a statement said.
In an additional sign of support for people in Gaza, supermarkets have also started selling the pro-Palestinian Gaza Cola fizzy drink, the statement added.
Coop Alleanza 3.0 is the largest cooperative in the Coop Italia network, comprising almost 350 stores in eight Italian regions from Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the north to Puglia in the south.
The cooperative 'cannot remain indifferent to the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip and united in calling for the immediate cessation of military operations,' it said.
Coop supermarket chains in Florence and the central regions of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria are also no longer stocking Israeli products, spokespeople said, insisting, however, that this did not amount to a formal boycott of Israeli products.
Israel's war in Gaza has triggered protests by some retailers and consumers internationally.
On Tuesday British food retailer the Co-op Group, a separate entity to Italy's Coop, announced it would cease sourcing products from Israel and 16 other countries where it said there were human rights abuses and violations of international law.
Israel has strongly denied accusations that it has committed war crimes and breaches of international law in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Gaza civil defense says Israeli forces kill 23
Gaza's civil defense agency said Israeli forces killed at least 23 people in the war-stricken territory on Saturday, including at least three children who died when a house was struck. After claiming victory in a 12-day war against Iran that ended with a ceasefire on June 24, the Israeli military said it would refocus on its offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian militants still hold Israeli hostages. Hamas's 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 56,412 people, also mostly civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry. The United Nations considers these figures to be reliable.

Saudi Arabia slams Israeli settlers' continued violence
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Saudi Arabia's condemnation and denunciation of the continued violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers, under the protection of the occupation forces, against Palestinian civilians. In a statement, the ministry specially noted the recent attacks in the village of Kafr Malik, east of Ramallah in the West Bank. The Kingdom reiterated its condemnation of the continued Israeli violence against unarmed civilians in Gaza, including the targeting of civilian sites housing displaced persons. Saudi Arabia stressed the need to exert all efforts to provide protection for Palestinian civilians and enable them to exercise all their legitimate rights. The ministry reiterated its call for the international community to assume its responsibilities to put an end to Israeli violations of international laws and norms. Three Palestinians have been shot dead after nearly 100 Israeli settlers attacked the village on Wednesday evening. The men of Kafr Malik had run to its south-western edge to form a screen against the settlers and rescue women and children trapped in a house set alight by the masked attackers. But as they threw stones at the settlers in an attempt to drive them back, the Israeli army, who had taken up position behind the marauders, opened fire at the Palestinians.

Six Israelis detained for attacking soldiers in West Bank: Military
Six Israelis were detained for assaulting soldiers near a town in the occupied West Bank where clashes with Palestinians erupted earlier this week, the military said on Saturday. Soldiers went to disperse a gathering of Israelis near the central West Bank town of Kafr Malik overnight Friday to Saturday, the military said in a statement. 'Upon the arrival of the security forces, dozens of Israeli civilians hurled stones toward them and physically and verbally assaulted the soldiers, including the Battalion Commander,' it said. In addition, the civilians vandalized and damaged security forces' vehicles, and attempted to ram the security forces,' it added. 'The security forces dispersed the gathering, and six Israeli civilians were apprehended and transferred to the Israel Police for further processing.' Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military declined to say whether those arrested were residents of Israeli settlements in the territory, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967. The military referred the query to the Israeli police, which was not available to comment. In a separate incident on Wednesday, the Palestinian health ministry said three men died in Kafr Malik in an attack by settlers. AFP journalists saw several hundred people gather for the three men's funerals on Thursday. The Palestinian foreign ministry alleged 'official complicity' by Israel in Wednesday's attack, in a message on X. 'Israeli occupation forces prevented ambulance crews from reaching the wounded and obstructed civil defense teams from entering the village for several hours, allowing fires ignited by the settlers to spread and destroy dozens of homes,' it said. The Israeli military did not respond to a request by AFP to comment on those claims.
