Mystery movie takes over Brisbane street with high-speed stunt

The Age15-06-2025
A high-speed film stunt shut a major road in the heart of Brisbane on Sunday, with a heavily modified Fuso truck racing up and down Queen Street for much of the afternoon.
What appeared to be a large prop laser gun was attached to the roof, with 'D.R.T. Defibrillation + Resuscitation' written along both sides of the truck.
An Audi SUV with an articulated camera arm was in tow for each run.
Workers on the scene would not reveal what film was being shot, but the truck looked very similar to one on the Brisbane set of upcoming Hollywood production Godzilla x Kong: Supernova last month.
Due for release in early 2027, the project is directed by Australian Grant Sputore and stars US actress Kaitlyn Dever, who played Brisbane-raised fraudster Belle Gibson in the hit Netflix show Apple Cider Vinegar.
In May, William Street was transformed into a devastated London road for the Godzilla blockbuster, with smashed cars and tanks strewn outside Star Casino.
The film is part of the Monsterverse franchise.

‘This isn't a novelty or aberration': Female jockeys set up for success in Queensland

Don't think it's just a one-off. A female jockey will soon create history by winning the Brisbane riding premiership for the first time, but expectations are that it could soon be the rule rather than the exception. As great mates Angela Jones and apprentice Emily Lang have been battling it out for the title, Brisbane Racing Club chairman Richard Morrison has been making plans to cater for the continuation of a trend that is reshaping Australian racing. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet IQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! As part of its broader refurbishment plans at Eagle Farm, Morrison confirmed the BRC is already planning to significantly expand the female jockeys' room to accommodate the growing number of women riding at the top level. 'It's something we're proud to support. We're not just responding to what's happening now, we're preparing for what racing will look like in the future,' Morrison said. 'The growth in female participation is real, it's sustained, and it's only going in one direction.' • 'Monumental for racing': PVL in talks for global racing channel Morrison, who was elected BRC chairman earlier this year when he replaced long-serving Neville Bell, feels there is a growing wave of female jockeys who are taking racing by storm. 'It's the first time a female rider will win the senior title, but it won't be the last,' Morrison said. 'This isn't a novelty or an aberration. 'It's a reflection of a changing industry and the incredible talent we're seeing from female riders across the board. 'Gone are the days where women were only given rides on outsiders as some kind of token gesture. Brisbane Racing Club chairman Richard Morrison (left) with BRC chief executive Karl deKroo. Picture: Liam Kidston 'Today, they have the trust of punters and the backing of the leading stables. They're riding the favourites and winning regularly. 'It's not just about the top two. 'Look at the apprentice ranks, there are 21 female apprentices and just eight males currently licensed to ride at provincial meetings in Queensland. 'Across the state, there are more registered female trackwork riders than male and the number of stablehands is similarly skewed. 'Thoroughbred racing across Australia would grind to a halt without the contribution of women.' • Rosehill, politics, the haters and his future: V'landys reveals all COBALT MYSTERY Peter Hulbert, 79, has been training for 48 years without any of his horses ever registering a positive swab ... until a recent cobalt case. It is surely one of the cleanest records of any trainer in Australia who has trained over several decades or more. And Hulbert, who trains with son Will, said he is gobsmacked at how former import Dillian tested above the legal threshold for cobalt. 'I've got absolutely no idea,' Peter Hulbert said. 'I will be looking through the (horse) feed and investigating how this could have happened. 'I had to go before stewards on Thursday and that was the first time in 48 years I have been called upon before stewards for a positive swab.' Dillian has now been disqualified by stewards from its win in a race at Eagle Farm in April and a $5000 fine imposed on its trainers.

Fans in a frenzy at possibility Tomorrowland could come to Australia in 2026

Eagle-eyed fans believe Tomorrowland, or at least an offshoot of the world-famous electronic dance music festival, is Australia-bound for the first time in 2026. Attendees walking towards the CORE stage at this year's festival in Belgium over the weekend spotted a map installation that looked to be teasing upcoming locations. Among them was Melbourne, which appeared as a potential host in November 2026. A video of the map was shared on TikTok, where it has racked up more than 120,000 likes. Many believe at the very least Tomorrowland's CORE stage is on its way as part of a boutique event series. 'I wanna go so freaking bad,' one person said. If it does pan out that way, it would mark the bucket-list festival's Australian debut. If must be said that there is no confirmation at this stage. has reached out to Tomorrowland representatives for details but are yet to hear back. The TikTok video also suggested a festival could be held in Los Angeles in May 2026. Tomorrowland is held annually in Boom, Belgium, attracting 400,000 festivalgoers from around the world. It was first held in 2005 and has grown to become one of the world's biggest music festivals. Just two days before the 2025 event was due to start, a raging fire destroyed the famous main stage. But heavy metal band Metallica came to the rescue, reportedly offering up some of their world tour stage equipment that was in storage to ensure the show could go on. Tomorrowland spin-off festivals have previously been held in the US, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The Potbelleez to play in Busselton for first time with intimate Hally's Bar gig

Australian music trio The Potbelleez will be heading to Busselton for the first time in their 20-year career for a more intimate than usual, but still large, show. The group — known for their hits Don't Hold Back and Are You With Me — will be heading to Hally's Bar on August 1, where an audience of 500 people can enjoy a night of electro-house and dance music. Founding member Jonny Sonic said the trio couldn't wait to make their debut in the South West town. 'It's our first time in Busselton and it's very rare for us to have a first time these days, because we pretty much played every nook and cranny in Australia,' he said. 'It's always good to see a new one.' Sonic said with the gig being capped at 500 people, he expected the show to be more engaging for them. 'You can see people in the eye and you can feed off the energy a lot quicker than at a festival,' he said. 'People just get go absolutely bonkers and they feel part of the show. 'When we play a smaller venue, they always feel like they're at a festival because of the grandeur of the show that we put on. It's a very big style of music with a very big sound.' Sonic's message to the locals was to 'put your dancing shoes on, don't be arrogant, treat everybody well on the dance floor, put your phones down and enjoy the night'. Venue manager Peter Davies said the crew were excited to welcome the trio. 'It's going to just be a party of fun. They're going to be playing all their hits, which are many,' he said. Davies reached out to the band, having known them since 2008, and asked Sonic if they wanted to do a show in the South West town. He thought he would be organising the event for a different, larger local venue but was happy to hear the trio wanted to play in their smaller venue. '(Sonic) said 'let's do an intimate gig piece. We play in front of thousands of people every weekend',' Davies said. Tickets are available through Oztix .
