Film crew descends on major Scottish city for remake of beloved 90s classic
One of Scotland's most iconic city centres has been transformed into a bustling film set as a movie production team descended on Edinburgh to shoot scenes for an upcoming film. Princes Street Gardens, in the heart of the capital, is currently being used for a major Bollywood production.
The city is playing host to the filming of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai - a modern remake of the popular 1990's Bollywood hit Biwi No. 1. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas in April next year.
The film's title comes from a Hindu saying, which roughly translates to mean 'young people are bound to fall in love'.
The original film, directed by filmmaker David Dhawan, told the story of a devoted housewife whose world is turned upside down when her husband leaves her for a glamorous supermodel. The remake is once again being directed by Dhawan.
Filming for the romantic comedy in Edinburgh began this week, with the area around the Royal Scottish Academy and East Princes Street Gardens shut off as cameras rolled.
Onlookers were treated to a colourful spectacle as Bollywood star Varun Dhawan - son of the director and one of India's highest paid actors - was seen filming a lively dance scene in traditional Bollywood clothing.
The 38-year-old actor was joined by two backup dancers and a group of Scottish bagpipers dressed in kilts, creating a fusion of Indian cinema and Scottish culture in the capital.
A short clip was shared online with the caption: "Varun Dhawan seen in Edinburgh today... shooting scenes from 'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai," as crowds gathered around the Bollywood star.
However, filming has not just stuck to the city centre. Earlier this week, cast and crew were also spotted filming on the gorgeous Portobello Beach.
In preparation for filming in Scotland, the production team issued a casting call in May, seeking local Scottish talent to appear in the film as background extras. The casting call requested for individuals to portray nurses and doctors for a hospital scene.
The 30-day shoot in Scotland is understood to cover two songs, with a chase sequence and 'comedic scenes' for the film.
According to the production team, the Edinburgh scenes mark the final stages of the shooting schedule.
As the casting call read: "The conclusion of Scotland schedule will lead to a film wrap, not-with-standing a couple of songs and some patchwork sequences."
A source told Pinkvilla, a top Bollywood news site: "A lot of combination scenes, leading to chaos on screen, will be shot in Scotland.
Bollywood stars Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur are also starring in the film, as the stars have also been spotted around the capital city filming various scenes.

Watch: The Bill star helps real-life police arrest shoplifter
An actor who starred as a policeman in TV show The Bill helped real-life officers apprehend a runaway thief on Wednesday, footage shows. Jeff Stewart, who played PC Reg Hollis in over 900 episodes of the show from 1984 to 2008, sprinted after a shoplifter and sat on his legs as officers arrested him. Praising the actor, Hampshire Constabulary said he was 'long since retired from Sun Hill station – but he's still got it'. The footage shows that, as Stewart comes to the police's aid, he tells them: 'Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years.' The 69-year-old Scottish actor helped the officers make an arrest in Southampton, Hants, on Wednesday. A force spokesman said: 'In policing, you should always expect the unexpected, but this really wasn't on The Bill for this week. Officers making an arrest in Southampton were aided by none other than TV's PC Reg Hollis during an incident on Wednesday July 23. 'The officers were in the city in the afternoon when they were alerted by staff at Co-op in Ocean Way to a suspected shoplifter, who attempted to make good his escape on a bicycle. The thief – 29-year-old Mohamed Diallo – fell off the bike during his attempts to flee, before officers pounced to make their arrest. 'To their surprise, local TV legend Jeff Stewart, who played PC Hollis for 24 years, came to their aid by sitting on the suspect's legs while officers put him in cuffs.' Witness Sam Holton was working from his home when he heard the commotion outside. He said: 'I hear lots of screaming and commotion. I see this guy cycling away, and he is being chased by a member of the public and two police. 'By the time I had whipped out my phone, the first police officer tackled the guy to the floor on his bike, and the other chap caught up. There was an older guy chasing behind the police. He helped the police hold the guy.' Diallo, from Southampton, admitted five counts of theft totalling £284 at Southampton magistrates' court. He will be sentenced next week.

New Harry Potter attraction launched in iconic Scots movie location
Scroll down for times and tickets THAT'S MAGIC New Harry Potter attraction launched in iconic Scots movie location Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A NEW Harry Potter attraction is launching in Scotland this summer. Fans of the book series and movie franchise have long flocked to the north to visit locations featured in the flicks. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 The Scottish landmark was used in four films 5 Harry Potter and his pals travelled on the train to Hogwarts over the viaduct 5 Now bus no. 9 ¾ will take visitors to the village 5 Scots schoolboy Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter in the new HBO series Credit: HBO Glenfinnan Viaduct has been one of the favourites, as the Hogwarts Express travelled across the famous bridge in four of the films. Now a new weekend bus service is being introduced to encourage more of the 600,000 annual visitors to Glenfinnan to leave their cars behind and travel a little more magically. And the bus line has a name inspired by the books, being called no. 9 ¾ - or 934. This is in a nod to Platform 9¾, the magical place Harry and his pals caught the Hogwarts Express when heading for school. According to those behind the bus journey, the service offers a 'spellbinding alternative to driving' with comfy seats and scenic views. The new timetable is part of a community-led effort aimed at helping plug a gap in public transport provision to the tiny village on the shores of Loch Shiel in Lochaber on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a pilot scheme to gauge public appetite for a motor-free day out and help relieve pressure on local car parks, which quickly fill up at this time of year, leading to hazardous kerbside parking and traffic congestion along the famous road to the Isles. The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), Glenfinnan Community Council, Glenfinnan Community Facilities Charitable Trust (SCIO), Glenfinnan Station Museum and HITRANS have each contributed to the cost of the buses. Local authority councillors have also backed the project by supporting an application to The Highland Council's Discretionary Budget, while local bus company, Shiel Buses, will operate the service. Glenfinnan businesses are also offering 'green rewards' as a thank you to those visitors who show them a valid bus or train ticket. Harry Potter legend breaks his silence as replacement cast in HBO TV series These include the NTS Visitor Centre offering a complimentary hot drink, and two-for-one on climbing Glenfinnan Monument, along with a range of other discounts. Kate Forbes MSP commented: "Glenfinnan has become an iconic destination for visitors, with thousands of visitors every year. This has created pressures on local infrastructure, which I have been working to resolve with local residents. 'A few years ago, the community successfully built a much larger car park. However, this has quickly become too small. As such, I have been chairing a task force to identify solutions over the last few years. HOW TO GET THERE THE summer weekend bus service will run four times a day at the weekends, between Fort William and Glenfinnan, from now until September 7. It is just one of many train and bus services that travel to Glenfinnan seven days a week. Visitors will be able to get on the Glenfinnan weekend bus at Fort William bus station, Lochaber High School (free parking available at weekends), Kilmallie Hall in Corpach and Linnhe Caravan Park. Times for the new service, along with timetables and prices for all other buses and trains, can be found in the 'Guide to visiting Glenfinnan without a Car.' This can be viewed and downloaded from 'I am delighted to see a new solution to get more people out of their cars. This will hopefully be transformational, as more visitors choose to share transport. 'I am enormously grateful to all the key stakeholders – The Highland Council, HITRANS, Shiel Buses, National Trust for Scotland and every local resident that has been helping drive this forward.'

Karen Dunbar returns to the Fringe for the first time in almost 20 years with a limited run of a show she describes as a mix of 'chat about TV, observations and stories'. 'I'm looking forward to being back in Edinburgh – I love the city and I love the Fringe – and I can't wait to spend time with the audience in a more intimate venue. I'll be chatting and connecting with the audience. It's all about sharing a connection and having a laugh' says Karen. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I'm even looking forward to travelling through to Edinburgh from Glasgow every night. I actually love driving on the M8 – I did it three nights a week for five years when I was hosting karaoke gigs in Edinburgh – and because my show's on just after 9 o'clock at night, I'll get the miss the rush hour!' she adds. Karen is looking forward be being back at The Fringe Karen last performed at the Fringe in 2008, when she performed two shows; a stand-up show and the monologue, A Drunk Women Looks At The Thistle, which was written especially for her by Denise Mina. One particular performance of the monologue has stuck in her mind: 'it was a brilliant piece, quite serious in places, and because I was also doing a stand-up show that year and was known to most people for being in comedy shows on the telly, it was a bit of a weird cross over. "Some people came along expecting it to be pure comedy. I'd come on wearing a pink paper Stetson hat, and the first few minutes were quite comedic – the character had been developed from a drunk woman character from my TV show' Karen explains. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'But a few minutes in there was a real change of pace and it became an exploration of the Scottish psyche. One night I started the piece, and I could hear people talking, not whispering, but chatting at a normal conversation volume. And they kept on talking. I was trying to work out what was going on. I initially thought it was maybe someone translating or something, but then I became aware of the rest of the audience tutting and making shushing noises. But the chat continued. Karen will be at Just The Tonic from 13th to 24th August "After about 20 minutes I worked out it was three blonde women, a bit the worse for wear, so I said to them, 'excuse me, is my monologue interrupting your conversation?' to which they responded 'nah, we were just saying we'd like to leave'. I replied, 'away you go!'. And off they went in a flurry of handbags and clicky heels. The rest of the audience were delighted to see the back of them, but thirty seconds later one of them reappears, shouts 'this is shite!' and staggers off again. "I was feeling really energised by that point, and was full of adrenaline, so picked up the show where I'd stopped and had the best performance of the entire run – it went brilliantly, and I got a standing ovation!' Karen Dunbar is on at Just Upstairs at Just the Tonic at The Caves, 13th to 24th August (Not 18th).
