Benilde sweeps top honors as Mycah Go, Rocky Motol named MVPs
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde emerged as the big winners of individual awards after Mycah Go of the Lady Blazers and Rocky Motol of the Blazers were proclaimed MVPs in their respective divisions.
Go, who had a total 174 points at the end of the elimination round to finish as the 26th top scorer, captured her second MVP plum after also winning the top award in Season 97.
The veteran outside spiker, who missed Season 98 due to multiple injuries before making a strong comeback last year, was also the second best server after averaging 0.33 aces per set in the regular season while also emerging as the eighth best spiker with 29.86 success rate.
With Go leading the Lady Blazers, Benilde has moved on cusp of another title and is now a victory away from sealing their four-peat run as they take on Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Game 2 of the NCAA Season 100 finals later today.
Go will also take home the Best Outside Spiker award alongside Letran's young sensation Vanessa Sarie, who was also named both the Rookie of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
Her teammate, Zam Nolasco, bagged the Best Middle Blocker award together with KJ Dionisio of San Sebastian College-Recoletos. Another pair of Letran players in Judiel Nitura and Lara Mae Silva brought home the Best Opposite Spiker and Best Libero plums, respectively.
Catherine Domasig of Arellano University was the Best Setter.
In the men's division, Motol became the Rookie MVP after leading top-seeded Benilde back to the Final Four, where they eventually fell twice to Letran to bow out of contention.
Motol, who collected 330 points through the elimination round, and Barbie San Andres of Mapua University are named the Best Outside Spikers while Vince Himzon and John Austero were awarded the Best Middle Blockers, making Himzon now a three-time best middle in the league.
Kobe Tabuga of University of Perpetual Help System was named the Best Opposite Spiker while Wayne Araño was given the Best Setter award.
AJ Rus of San Beda University emerged as the Best Libero while Dave Lardizabal of Letran came out as the Freshman of the Year.

FilOil: Benilde averts collapse in one-point escape vs. EAC, nears top seed
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde nearly wasted a double-digit lead, but hung tough to escape Emilio Aguinaldo College, 86-85, in the 18th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Sunday. Without Allen Liwag and Justine Sanchez, veteran guard Tony Ynot led the way with 17 points laced with two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to help the Blazers pull off the victory despite almost squandering a huge 17-point cushion. Jhomel Ancheta sent Benilde to a 72-55 lead late in the third period, but the Generals turned to EJ Castillo in the fightback that saw them pulling within the in the fourth, 81-84, thanks to four straight baskets from the rookie sensation. Castillo followed those up with another stepback jumper before Jacob Shanoda sank a pair of free throws off a foul he drew from Raffy Celis to further trim the gap to a solitary point, 85-86, with 53 seconds left in the game. EAC had a chance to win it, but Nico Quinal missed a last-gasp three-pointer attempt as Benilde held on to take its second win in a row. Benilde improved to 7-1 and could secure the top seed if it wins over Lyceum of the Philippines University (1-7) on Wednesday and if Colegio de San Juan de Letran (7-1) loses to San Beda University (4-4). In another game, graduating Yukien Andrada displayed his veteran presence in leading San Beda to a 76-70 win against the struggling Lyceum. The 6-foot-5 forward almost had a double-double outing of 21 points and nine rebounds while also getting ample help from Agjanti Miller and Nygel Gonzales. New recruit Miller posted a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds while Gonzales chipped in 13 markers, seven assists, and two boards as the also-ran Red Lions look to end their campaign on a high note. Andrew Estrella is new Letran Squires head coach
NCAA Andrew Estrella is the new head coach of the Colegio de San Juan Letran Squires. Estrella will replace Willie Miller who steered the Squires to a Final Four run in NCAA Season 100. Estrella handled the UE Junior Warriors U16 team in the past two seasons and delivered the title in UAAP U16 boys basketball last December. "I'm incredibly thankful to Letran and Strong Group Athletics for this chance to lead the Squires," Estrella said in a statement. "Thank you to Fr. Raymond [Jose, OP], Fr. Vic, Boss Frank, and Boss Jacob for believing in me. I'll give my best and make sure not to let anyone down." Despite his new responsibility as a head coach, Estrella will still be serving in the University of the East. "I may have a new home with Letran, but there are no goodbyes," he said. "I'll still be consulting for UE. UE helped shape who I am as a coach, and I'll always be grateful for that." Benilde, Arellano off to Filoil Preseason quarterfinals alongside Letran, EAC
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Arellano University crushed San Beda University and Jose Rizal University, respectively, on Wednesday to complete the four NCAA teams advancing to Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup quarterfinals. The Blazers waxed hot from downtown to punish the Red Lions with a 102-64 win while the surging Chiefs cruised to their fifth win in a row after an 82-60 victory over the Heavy Bombers. Benilde launched 15 huge three-pointers, four of which came from veteran guard Tony Ynot as he finished with 12 points, six assists, and three rebounds against his old team to help his current one improve to 6-1. Bonn Daja and transferee Shawn Umali chipped in 13 and 10 markers each in a balanced offense for the Blazers. The Red Lions, meanwhile, fell to a 2-4 card with three more games in their schedule, taking on Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and rival Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the coming days. Earlier, Arellano remained unbeaten with King Vinoya ruling on both ends after tallying 29 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and one assist as the Chiefs ended the elimination round with an impressive 6-3 card. Benilde and Arellano complete an unlikely top-four NCAA team in the preseason showcase alongside Letran and EAC.
