In 2024, Qatar Charity (QC) implemented 78 water and development projects, benefiting more than 140,000 people in remote and marginalised areas in Somalia. This comes even as the world celebrated the annual International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on June 17th.
This year's theme, 'Restoring Land... Unlock Opportunities,' highlights how restoring the foundation of nature can provide jobs, enhance food and water security, support climate action, and contribute to strengthening economic resilience.
Qatar Charity has placed drought and desertification in Africa at the top of its humanitarian priorities, and Somalia has been one of the most prominent arenas of fieldwork, where millions suffer from the effects of prolonged desertification and water insecurity.
To combat the drought that threatens lives and undermines development opportunities, Qatar Charity has implemented dozens of water and development projects in Somalia.
On the occasion of the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, 2025, Qatar Charity has reiterated its commitment to being an effective part of global efforts to combat desertification and drought, especially in affected countries like Somalia, through cooperation with international and local partners. The organisation believes that every drop of water makes a difference, and every tree planted is a promise of a better future.
In central Somalia, specifically in the Galgaduud region, there is a village called Yoron, where there is no running water, electricity, or paved roads.
Nothing is more difficult here than obtaining water. The nearest well is 50 kilometres away.The long hours spent on this arduous and exhausting journey lead to children missing school, while the women suffer from exhaustion and anxiety, fearing the contaminated water, which can only bring them serious infectious diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.
The bleak scene changed when Qatar Charity, with the support of the Qatari peoples, decided to implement a water project in the area.
Drilling machines arrived and their cries echoed throughout the village, heralding the birth of new hope. A project to dig an artesian well, over 180 meters deep, was launched in the village in search of clean water.
Life has returned to the village, and everyone is awaiting the completion of this project. The long-awaited well has become a symbol of steadfastness and determination to survive despite all the obstacles and difficulties.

The radio station, which began broadcasting on June 25 of 1968, marked the birth of a new Arab voice. It started with limited hours of transmission but grew steadily over the years until it became a 24-hour broadcaster. During this continuous journey of dedication, the station has engaged with its listeners and moved forward with successive modernization plans across all departments and staff, fueled by boundless ambition and unmatched determination. Over the past decades, Qatar Radio has served as the voice of Qatar to the world and as a media platform that contributed to consolidating national identity, enhancing belonging, and highlighting the genuine values of Qatari society. Since its inception, it has played a central role in serving the nation through a variety of programs. On this special day, we reflect on the milestones of this pioneering media institution, which started with just a few hours of daily broadcasting and grew into a prominent media beacon that now broadcasts around the clock in multiple languages, reaching millions of listeners in Qatar, the Gulf region, and across the world. The origins of Qatar Radio date back to 1965, with the establishment of the first radio service in the country, the Grand Mosque Radio, which broadcast Qur'an recitations, religious programs, and news on Fridays and special occasions. This initiative laid the foundation for the official launch of Qatar Radio on Jun. 25, 1968. The station began broadcasting on medium wave for five hours a day in Arabic, divided into a morning segment of an hour and a half and an evening segment of three hours. In 1969, the total airtime increased to nine hours, then to 13 hours in 1970, and to 19 hours in 1982, until it eventually became a 24-hour broadcast service in 2002. As part of its ambitious plans to deliver Qatar's voice to non-Arabic speakers within and beyond the country, Qatar Radio launched an English-language service in 1971. Initially broadcasting for one hour, the service expanded to 19 hours by 2004. In 1980, a service in Urdu was introduced, resonating strongly with the Urdu-speaking community in Qatar and the wider Gulf. This began with a one-hour daily broadcast on medium wave and expanded to three hours by 1989. In 1985, a unique French-language service was launched, unmatched in the entire region at the time, broadcasting three hours daily on medium wave. In 1992, Qatar Radio introduced a dedicated 'Qur'an Radio' service, focusing on Qur'anic recitation, religious studies, Hadith, and interpretive texts, while also addressing contemporary issues through a religious lens. The station received wide public approval. On this cherished occasion, which holds special meaning for everyone living in this country and for media professionals across Qatar, the Gulf, and the Arab world, it is worth reaffirming that radio will always retain its unique charm and powerful presence. With its warm, familiar human voices, it continues to touch hearts and minds in a way that no advanced technology can fully replace, regardless of how far it progresses.

Awqaf ministry honours 603 outstanding Quran students
QNA Doha The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf), represented by the Department of Da'wah and Religious Guidance, held the annual ceremony of the Holy Quran and its Sciences Section to honour an elite group of outstanding and graduating students from Quran learning centres for the years 2023 and 2024. The event took place at the Imam Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque under the patronage of Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs HE Ghanem bin Shaheen Al Ghanim and in the presence of Undersecretary of the Ministry HE Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani. During the ceremony, 603 students from various educational levels, from introductory stages to full memorisation of the Holy Quran, were honoured, in addition to 15 outstanding heads of Quran centres and 100 distinguished teachers, in recognition of their dedicated efforts in serving the Book of Allah and advancing Quranic education. The ceremony featured Quran recitations by students of varying levels, followed by a speech from Director of the Department of Da'wah Jassim bin Abdullah Al Ali, who emphasised that the event reflects the ministry's commitment to honouring Quran memorisers and enhancing the role of Quran centers as educational and moral institutions that contribute to nurturing a well-rounded generation conscious of its Islamic identity. He cited the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: 'The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.' Al Ali highlighted the major achievements of the Quran and its Sciences Section over the past two years, including the graduation of 181 students who memorised the entire Quran, the progression of 422 Qatari students to higher levels of memorization, and the enrollment of 92 distinguished Qatari students into the Al-Noor Educational Quranic Center. He also noted the organisation of various educational and recreational programs to motivate students attending the centres. A visual presentation during the ceremony showcased statistics on the development of Quran centres. The number of centers increased from 132 in 2023 to 148 in 2024, including 116 funded by the ministry and 32 funded by private donors. Additionally, 28 Quranic study circles were held in mosques, supervised by 1,016 qualified mosque imams and muezzins. The presentation revealed that the number of students enrolled in the Quran centers reached approximately 18,994 in 2024, including 2,249 Qatari students. The number of students who completed memorisation of the entire Quran rose from 58 in 2023 to 123 in 2024. The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) reaffirmed its continued efforts to provide a stimulating learning environment in Quran education centers and to equip them with the latest teaching tools, contributing to the memorisation of the Holy Quran and the dissemination of its noble values, in line with Qatar's vision to promote the values of tolerant Islam.

Qatar Charity launches its pioneering Quran Literacy Project in Bangladesh
Tribune News Network Doha Qatar Charity (QC) has launched its pioneering Quran Literacy Project in Bangladesh, aimed at empowering children with reading difficulties by equipping them with the essential skills to recite, memorise, and comprehend the Holy Quran. The project is part of QC's wider Al-Furqan Quranic Literacy Programme, which not only focuses on Quranic education but also promotes the moral, psychological, and social development of its beneficiaries. The initiative is delivered through simplified, engaging, and inclusive educational content, reinforcing QC's commitment to supporting marginalised communities through both spiritual and educational development. The project was inaugurated at two of QC's flagship social welfare centres—Markaz Muhammad Bin Ajaj Al-Kubaisi Centre and the Sakhaa Centre—with over 600 sponsored children in attendance. The launch ceremony was vibrant and participatory, featuring Holy Quran recitations, theatrical performances, and cultural competitions. These activities reflected the programme's inclusive and celebratory approach to learning, while fostering a sense of community and purpose among participants. Speaking at the event, Dr Mohammad Amin Hafez Omar, country director of QC's Bangladesh Branch, said, 'This initiative is more than a literacy campaign—it is a transformative journey. Teaching the Holy Quran is not just about words and rules; it is about building balanced individuals equipped with values, self-respect, and purpose. Through this programme, we enable our beneficiaries to connect with the divine message and open the door to a renewed sense of identity, dignity, and direction in life.' Monzurul Haque, a Holy Quran teacher involved in the project, elaborated on the teaching methodology: 'We begin with foundational Arabic, helping students recognise letters and sounds, then gradually introduce Quranic verses along with their meanings. Our goal is not merely fluency, but deep understanding and spiritual reflection.' The students expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the initiative. Zakaria Dewan shared: 'I feel proud to be part of this program. Learning the Holy Quran properly has always been a dream for me. Now, I feel like I am doing something that gives me strength and brings me closer to my faith.' Khadiza Begum added: 'This project makes me happy. I feel like I am learning something important for my life. It gives me hope that I can understand the Holy Quran like my teachers.' Ataul Islam reflected: 'Learning the Holy Quran in its original language is a dream I never thought possible. It makes me feel connected to my faith and my identity.' It is worth noting that Qatar Charity currently supports 5,082 students in Bangladesh through comprehensive financial assistance, aiming to ensure a brighter and more secure future for them.
