New Delhi: The world's most populous country is India, with an estimated population of 146.39 crore (as of April). On the contrary, the country's total fertility rate has plunged to 1.9, falling below the replacement level of 2.1. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the death rate was higher than normal. But even after the COVID-19 pandemic, the ratio of deaths to births remained high in 2022. Except for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the ratio of deaths to births has not returned to 2019 levels – the pre-COVID era – in almost every state.
For example, in 2022, Goa's deaths were 87 percent of its births – much higher than the 70 percent level recorded in the pre-COVID era in 2019 and even higher than in 2020. Shocking Figures Reported In These States
In Tamil Nadu, where the ratio was 74 percent in 2022 (equal to 2020) but above the pre-Covid figure of 67 percent. In the southern state of Kerala's the ratio remains at 74 percent, above 56 percent in 2019.
Sikkim, which has the lowest fertility rate among all Indian states, also reported a ratio of 61 percent in 2022, higher than both pre-Covid 2019 and pandemic year 2020.
Chandigarh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which witnessed a sharp jump in the year 2021, have not been able to return to earlier levels.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported a 69 percent death-to-birth ratio in 2022, which is also above 58 percent in 2019. Lower Death-To-Birth Ratio Reported In These States
In contrast, states with predominantly young populations, like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, witnessed significantly lower death-to-birth ratios, below 30 percent.
Bihar's ratio being less than 15 percent. Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand reported notable population increases in 2021, although the growth rate showed a slight decrease in 2022.

Washington: Several leading medical groups filed suit against US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Monday, accusing him of endangering public health with new Covid-19 vaccine recommendations. At the end of May, Kennedy announced via social media that federal authorities would no longer recommend Covid-19 vaccines for children and pregnant women, resulting in blowback from health experts. In the lawsuit, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Physicians (ACP) and other leading medical groups are calling on the court to stop Kennedy's "unilateral, unscientific" directive and restore the Covid-19 vaccine to immunization schedules. "It is really unconscionable to take away a parent's ability and choice to protect their children through vaccination," said Tina Tan, a pediatrician and president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, one of the plaintiffs. Since taking office, Kennedy -- who spent decades spreading vaccine misinformation before becoming President Donald Trump's top health official -- has worked to overhaul American vaccination policies. In June, he fired all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and appointed his own panelists, under the banner of "Make America Healthy Again." Monday's complaint also highlighted the controversial new appointees to ACIP. "We are on a dangerous path," warned Susan Kressly of the AAP, denouncing what she described as misinformation spread by Kennedy while citing the concerns of her peers and parents of patients. "Pediatricians cannot stay silent as the system we rely on to support life-saving vaccines is chiseled away piece by piece, with Secretary Kennedy leading efforts to sow doubt and distrust in the American success story of vaccines," Kressly said. The problem isn't limited to parents and children, as misinformation about vaccines undermines a long-standing trust between doctor and patient. Increasingly, medical professionals are finding that adult patients are "hesitant to get their vaccines. They are not trusting the system anymore," said Jason Goldman, president of the ACP. The issue of vaccines extends beyond Covid-19 in the US. Johns Hopkins University released a count Monday finding the US has recorded its worst measles epidemic in more than 30 years, with 1,277 cases confirmed since the beginning of 2025, and illness recorded in 40 of 50 states. The total US figure is the highest since 1992. The joint complaint was filed in Massachusetts, a northeastern US state. Federal health officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP.

Young medico's campaign brings smart school to Rajasthan's Chambal ravines
A unique campaign led by a young medico to improve the living conditions in a small village situated in Rajasthan's Chambal ravines, which was devoid of basic infrastructure to sustain life, has brought a smart school to the region. The Indian-Norwegian Community, a voluntary group from Oslo, Norway, has rendered help for the campaign. The Rajghat village in Dholpur district is deprived of the benefits of schemes designed for panchayats because of its location in the municipal limits. The 'Save Rajghat Campaign' of Ashwani Parashar, 28, first brought electricity to the village with a population of just 350 and later drew the attention of international donors who have pitched in to support the efforts to build the infrastructure. Village of Boatmen The village is inhabited mostly by boatmen, who work as daily wage labourers. Interestingly, the shooting for Hindi films Bandit Queen and Paan Singh Tomar, based on the Chambal dacoits, was done near Rajghat. An old and single-room government primary school in a dilapidated condition – the only educational institution in Rajghat – has given way to a smart school with two classrooms, an office room and a small verandah, constructed in the shape of train coaches. The installation of a smart board in the school has stopped the student dropouts. Dr. Parashar told The Hindu that the Indian-Norwegian Community carried out crowdfunding to support the 'Save Rajghat Campaign' through a project called Saksham. The school, which was on the verge of closure because of decline in admissions, is now functioning with a newly installed smart board. It has over 30 students enrolled, and new admissions are coming in the academic session which started on July 1. Dr. Parashar said his campaign would now focus on 'dignified life' for villagers, with a motorable road, clean drinking water and a fully functional hospital.

The recent challenge grants and patent support programmes of ICMR are designed to catalyse this spirit of innovation, ensuring India remains at the forefront of medical breakthroughs," Dr Bahl said, sharing ICMR's vision for Viksit Bharat.
