Gobind pushes for ethical AI governance, Asean collaboration at Unesco forum
BANGKOK, June 26 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo highlighted the nation's initiatives in advancing responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and fostering regional collaboration during the 3rd Unesco Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (GFEAI 2025) on Wednesday.
Gobind emphasised Malaysia's commitment to promoting responsible AI governance, encouraging regional partnerships, and ensuring that the country's progress aligns with globally recognised ethical standards.
'As AI continues to evolve, meaningful dialogue and international cooperation are essential for building a future that is inclusive, secure, and beneficial to all,' he said during the high-level ministerial panel titled Fostering Global Dialogue on AI for a Collective Future at the Unesco GFEAI 2025.
Earlier, Gobind participated in a panel discussion titled 'From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical and Human Capacities in AI.'
During the session, he highlighted Malaysia's achievements, including strengthening nationwide connectivity, adopting a multi-faceted approach to infrastructure, talent, and trust development, and introducing data centre regulations to position Malaysia as a regional hub for data infrastructure.
'I am confident that many more commendable milestones lie ahead. That said, I firmly believe that the next phase of advancement must be underpinned by robust and forward-looking policies and regulations.
'At the Ministry of Digital, our commitment to driving this agenda remains unwavering. We will continue to strive for a digital future that is inclusive, secure, and sustainable,' he said.
Later in the day, Gobind held a bilateral meeting with Thailand's Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Jantararuangtong, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister.
Gobind said their discussion centred on opportunities for regional collaboration in digital technology and AI, with a particular focus on transformative applications in the agriculture, health, and transport sectors.
'Building on the relationship first established during ADGMIN, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to Asean cooperation in digital technologies and AI. As Malaysia assumes the 2025 Asean Chair, I extended invitations to the upcoming Asean AI Summit in August and the SMART City Expo in September, both of which will be held in Kuala Lumpur,' he said.
Gobind added that both ministers also addressed the urgent need for joint action on cybersecurity threats in an increasingly AI-driven digital landscape. — Bernama

Tengku Zafrul said that as Malaysia opens doors for young entrepreneurs and innovators, it is important to mention how Malaysia's own long-term strategies align with these regional ambitions. 'Through the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), Malaysia is transforming our industrial landscape by focusing on high value-added sectors, advanced manufacturing, and future-oriented skills. 'NIMP's core mission is to create quality jobs and ensure our industries – especially in electrical and electronics (and) green tech – remain globally competitive, resilient, and sustainable,' he said. According to the minister, national frameworks such as NIMP are not just about Malaysia's progress. 'They also complement Asean initiatives like DEFA and the Asean SME Academy, creating a seamless ecosystem that supports youth, from upskilling and financing to market access, so you can truly take your ideas from the region to the world,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also gave recognition to arts and culture, saying that too often, the creative sector is wrongly treated as secondary to the 'main economy.' 'The truth is, culture and creativity are economic engines, identity builders and bridges between nations,' he said, adding that Asean's creative industries, from music to film, are gaining global attention. The MITI Minister said he cannot overstate the importance of entrepreneurship in driving both economic progress and social transformation. MACC tracks Daim-linked assets in US, Singapore, Japan, Italy and Jersey
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expanded its investigation into high-value assets linked to the late Tun Daim Zainuddin and his family to five more countries. This follows earlier action in the United Kingdom and Malaysia involving several high-profile assets tied to the former finance minister and his proxies, New Straits Times reported this evening. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper listed the five countries as the United States, Singapore, Japan, Italy and the Crown Dependency of Jersey, an island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, France. The assets in question were allegedly not declared to the MACC during its investigation. 'Other nations where assets are allegedly being held will also face similar action,' one unnamed source was quoted as saying. The MACC began probing Daim's financial affairs as part of a wider investigation into unexplained wealth and asset declarations involving politically exposed persons.

Australia Northern Territory minister's visit reinforces relations with Sarawak

KUCHING (June 28): The Australia Northern Territory Government hosted a networking dinner here in conjunction with its Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill's visit to Sarawak recently. Cahill, who led a seven-member delegation, was in the state capital to discuss potential cooperation between Sarawak and the Northern Territory, given their shared interest in a number of common areas. Representing the state government at the event was Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee, said Sarawak Australia Business Chamber president Rodger Chan in a statement today. In his speech at the dinner, Chan said the programme marked Cahill's first visit to Sarawak. 'This is significant as she has skipped other parts of Malaysia. 'This shows the Northern Territory Government's and her seriousness in engaging with Sarawak. 'There is also a Department of Asian Relations in her government, and this shows how the Northern Territory Government is serious about and focusing on Asia,' he said. Chan added that Cahill's visit to Sarawak reignited the long-standing relationship between Australia and Sarawak, noting that this year marked the 70th anniversary of Australia-Malaysia diplomatic relationship. 'It also marks the 80th anniversary of the landing of Australia and ANZAC forces landing in Bario under Operation Semut. In fact, Australia was here more than 80 years ago to help Sarawak in defending the Japanese occupation,' added Chan.
