Two men rescued after being stranded down 250-foot deep California mine shaft

Daily Mail27-04-2025
A pair of California rappellers were rescued after they became stranded in a steep 250-foot-deep mine shaft.
The two young men became stuck in the abandoned mine near Twentynine Palms on April 19 after their equipment failed, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
A third companion, who had remained above ground, called 911 to rescue the stranded rappellers.
A video showed the operation of responding crews, who used ARVs to navigate the 'rugged terrain.'
'This is an area that, you know, there's no way you're going to get a four-wheel drive vehicle up here. You need specialized equipment,' spokesperson Shawn Millerick said in the video.
A rescuer was lowered into the mine using a dual-line rope system as night began to fall.
'We're just going to hoist them out one at a time, and then our rescuer will come up after,' Millerick said.
Both men were secured and hoisted to the surface without sustaining injuries just before 7pm.

Crews from Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley, Fontana, Lake Arrowhead and Hesperia were called to aid the rescue, according to SBCF.
Marine Corps Air Combat Center, Morongo Basin Ambulance and the San Bernadino County Sheriff's Department also provided support.
'This incident demonstrates San Bernardino County Fire's readiness to respond to emergencies in even the most challenging environments,' SBCF said.

Judge reduces bail for Memphis guard Sincere Parker in domestic assault case

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis guard Sincere Parker's bail was cut nearly in half Monday, two days after he was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend. Shelby County General Sessions Criminal Court Judge Greg Gilbert reduced Parker's bail from $120,000 to $75,000. Parker's attorney, Arthur Horne, told reporters that the bond had been posted. Parker is due back in court on July 29. He must remain at least 100 feet from his ex-girlfriend. She told police that the attack occurred on May 27 at the Memphis apartment the couple shared. She reported that Parker pushed her, slapped her in the face and choked her, leaving her bruised and bloodied, according to a police report. The woman also told police that Parker, 23, broke her cellphone because he didn't want her to have the digital key to the apartment. Horne told reporters that the incident was captured on a video call between Parker and his mother, 'which is fortunate for us and fortunate for our defense.' 'We plan on fighting this,' Horne said. 'This has been a long, ongoing saga between him and the ex-girlfriend. I just hope the public will give us time to sort through it so the whole story does come out because there are two sides to this. Right now, it looks like my client, Mr. Parker, is a woman-abuser, and that's not the case.' Horne said he believed the Memphis athletic department is waiting to see how the case unfolds before deciding whether to take action. Parker transferred to Memphis after averaging 12.2 points last season for McNeese, helping the Cowboys and coach Will Wade reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He played his first two seasons for Saint Louis. ___ AP college basketball: and The Associated Press

Jonas Valanciunas says he's 'fully committed' to Nuggets, ending speculation he'd try to leave NBA to play in Greece

Jonas Valanciunas has spoken. He plans to play for the Denver Nuggets. Valanciunas clarified his stance on Monday for the first time since he was traded to the Nuggets from the Sacramento Kings. "I want to clear the air about my playing situation next season now that Denver has made their decision to keep me," Valanciunas told BasketNews. "The idea of playing for Panathinaikos, closer to home, was very exciting to me, but that will have to wait. "I am fully committed to honoring my contract with the Nuggets this season and will give it my all to compete for a championship." The Nuggets acquired Valanciunas to offer much-needed relief for three-time MVP center Nikola Jokić. But shortly after the July 2 trade, news broke that Valanciunas was being courted by Greek EuroLeague team Panathinaikos, leading to speculation that he would not play for Denver. Monday's statement should bring a conclusion to that speculation after Valanciunas previously declined to commit to Denver when given the chance. Valanciunas previously wasn't so clear Valanciunas is under contract with Denver on the second year of a three-year, $30.3 million deal. Since the news of Panathinaikos' interest in Valanciunas, Nuggets brass have made it clear that they intend for Valanciunas to honor his contract. 'There's been nothing but healthy conversations in terms of him honoring his contract and him excited to be a Nugget,' executive vice president of basketball operations Ben Tenzer said at a news conference last week. Valanciunas' contract extends his professional basketball rights exclusively to the NBA team that holds them. If he were to sign with Panathinaikos, which is much closer to his home country of Lithuania, he could do so only with the blessing of a Nuggets team that just traded for him. Valanciunas had previously offered a non-committal answer when asked about the topic by Lithuanian media. "We will find out only when the first game is played," Valanciunas said on July 8. "Everything will be clear." Once it became clear that Denver didn't intend to release him from his contract, Valanciunas had little recourse to continue playing for a team that's not the Nuggets. On Monday, he made clear that he intends to report to Denver and "give it my all." Whichg is good news for the Nuggets. The addition of Valanciunas is a key piece of an offseason roster overhaul that the Nuggets hope will return them to title contention, three seasons after Jokić led the franchise to its sole NBA championship. Key addition for Nuggets Jokić played 36.7 minutes per game last season, the most of his career by more than two minutes per game. He did so because the Nuggets lacked an effective backup center, and the Nuggets were significantly worse when Jokić was off the floor. Jokić faced physical matchups in the post in a pair of grueling seven-game playoff series when matched up against Clippers center Ivica Zubac and Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein. Without a viable backup, Jokić's minutes increased in the postseason to 40.2 per game. At 6-foot-11 and 265 pounds, Valanciunas is a physical presence in the post who can provide Jokić with much-needed relief in similar situations. He was an impact player for the Kings and Wizards last season with averages of 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds in just 18.8 minutes per game. Valanciunas joins Cam Johnson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown as new faces in Denver from last season's team that took the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games in a tightly contested second-round playoff series.

AFL superstar Bontempelli makes call on Bulldogs future

The Western Bulldogs have finalised a four-year deal that keeps superstar Marcus Bontempelli at the Whitten Oval until the end of the 2029 season. The highest-profile player in the AFL coming out-of-contract, the Dogs captain is going nowhere after signing a new four-year deal. "I've had a few different things happening - getting married in the off-season, opening a small coffee shop out in Kew - but ultimately it is no different to how I've dealt with other things in the past," Bontempelli said. "It's an important decision to spend the right amount of time. "This club means so much to me, it's hard to put it into a few words to be honest. "It is where I have grown as a man and spent all of my adult years coming here at 18. "When I think about the person I want to become it has been influenced by the people I have spent a lot of time with at the Western Bulldogs. "I owe so much from a footballing experience perspective but I think I really owe a lot of my maturing as a person and as a man to the football club. "For me, it's such a special place, the fans, the people that have supported me along the way. "I've never not felt supported by our people here at the club. "I feel incredibly lucky to have had that for so long." 👀 — Western Bulldogs (@westernbulldogs) July 22, 2025 Confirmation of the news comes a night after Bontempelli was named the club's second-greatest ever player, only behind the legendary Ted Whitten. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge was excited about Bontempelli's future when asked about it last Wednesday: "I think we're getting close, but that's all I can really say." The 29-year-old has played 253 games for the Bulldogs after being taken with pick four in the 2013 draft. A tall, big-bodied midfielder, Bontempelli made his mark on the competition instantly. Bontempelli won the first of his six Charles Sutton medals as the Bulldogs' best-and-fairest in 2016, the season the club broke a 62-year premiership drought. The signing is a boost for the Bulldogs following two-straight defeats that has them sitting outside of the top-eight ahead of the final five weeks of the season.
