Eating more fruits and vegetables linked to surprising effect on sleep
A study from the University of Chicago Medicine and Columbia University found that increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables could help promote more restful sleep.
Previous research has shown that people who lack quality sleep may be more likely to indulge in unhealthy foods that are high in fat and sugar — and now this new finding sheds more light on how consumed foods impact sleep.
In the small study — which was published in "Sleep Health: The Journal of the National Sleep Foundation" — 34 healthy young adults reported their daily food consumption and wore a tracker to measure how often they woke up or changed sleep patterns during the night, according to a press release.
Those who reported eating more fruits and vegetables during the day were found to have "deeper, more uninterrupted sleep."
Greater amounts of healthy carbohydrates, like whole grains, were found to have that same benefit, the study found.
"Dietary modifications could be a new, natural and cost-effective approach to achieve better sleep," said co-senior author Esra Tasali, MD, director of the UChicago Sleep Center, in the release.
"The temporal associations and objectively-measured outcomes in this study represent crucial steps toward filling a gap in important public health knowledge."
Based on the study findings, the researchers concluded that people who eat at least five cups of fruits and veggies per day could have a 16% increase in quality of sleep compared to those who eat none of those foods.
"Small changes can impact sleep. That is empowering — better rest is within your control."
"16 percent is a highly significant difference," Tasali said in the release. "It's remarkable that such a meaningful change could be observed within less than 24 hours."
"Based on current data, the experts confidently advise that regularly eating a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables is best for long-term sleep health," the release stated.
The American Heart Association provides the following examples of fruit and veggie servings that equate to 1 cup of produce.
Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, head sleep expert at Wesper in Michigan, said that most sleep professionals recognize that a healthy diet supports overall well-being, including sleep quality — "so the findings of this study are not entirely unexpected."
"However, it's important to note that this was a relatively small study composed primarily of young adult male participants, which limits generalizability," Rohrscheib, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.
"While the results were statistically significant, the overall reduction in sleep fragmentation was modest, about 16%."
The study was also observational in nature, she noted, which means it lacked the control of a randomized trial.
"Ideally, future research would compare a group consuming a fruit- and vegetable-rich diet to a control group with limited intake to better establish causality," the doctor added.
The researchers plan to conduct more studies to confirm that eating produce causes better sleep and to determine the "underlying mechanisms of digestion, neurology and metabolism" driving this impact, the release stated.

"People are always asking me if there are things they can eat that will help them sleep better," said co-senior author Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, director of the Center of Excellence for Sleep & Circadian Research at Columbia, in the release.
"Small changes can impact sleep. That is empowering — better rest is within your control."

Missing Utah Camper with Diabetes Found Dead After Nearly 10-Day Search
Chad Burningham went missing from a campsite in Utah on Monday, July 14 A missing man with diabetes has been found dead after disappearing from a campsite 10 days ago. Chad Burningham, 42, was located by search and rescue dogs on Wednesday, July 23, the Tooele County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) announced in a news release shared on Facebook. Burningham — who was diabetic and required a daily intake of multiple medicines, per a GoFundMe page — had last been seen on July 14, leaving a campsite while camping with friends in Soldier Canyon, Stockton, at around 8:00 a.m. local time, KSL TV 5 reported, citing the TCSO. 'We extend our heartfelt condolences to Chad's family and loved ones," the TCSO said following their discovery, per the news release. "We also want to thank all the volunteers and partnering agencies who dedicated their time to the search — especially Dogs at Work Search and Rescue for their continued efforts." The investigation into Burningham's death is ongoing, the sheriff's office said, and as a result, 'no further information is available at this time.' It is currently unknown if Burningham had the device needed to treat his diabetes with him at the time of his disappearance. 'Family has told us he should have his insulin pump, but we haven't been able to confirm that,' Sgt. Dane Lerdahl of the sheriff's office previously said, per KSL TV 5. A fundraiser created after Burningham went missing is now raising funds for his funeral expenses. The late camper's family shared an insight into his medical situation in the description of the GoFundMe page. 'Chad is a diabetic with high blood pressure, a failing kidney, vision loss, and is on dialysis multiple days of the week. He takes several meds to keep moving forward,' the GoFundMe states. 'He has been in and out of the ER more times than I can remember in the last 6 months. Needless to say, his health does not support the ability to hike or even walk a long distance.' "He was so excited to go camping with his friends,' the fundraiser says. 'I imagine because this would be doing something that felt 'normal' and not house based.' The GoFundMe also alleges that Burningham went missing after telling the two friends he was camping with that he was going for a walk. He first 'woke them up concerned about a fire and wanting to leave,' per the fundraiser. After they told him there was no fire, Burningham 'told them he wanted to go for a walk,' at which point his friends 'turned around for a second and he was gone.' 'They mentioned that he went for a walk the day prior and came back within an hour. So at this point they were not worried and waited,' the GoFundMe adds. But 'after several hours of being gone they called the police.' News that Burningham was found dead comes a week after the TCSO's last update on the search for him. On July 16, two days after he went missing, the sheriff's office stated on Facebook that the 'extensive efforts" to find the missing 42-year-old were still underway. The search and rescue efforts included the use of not only tracking dogs, but also drones, a helicopter and an airplane, the sheriff's office said. 'We have extensively searched the areas where we believe Chad may have been and our detectives are working on other potential leads," the TCSO said at the time. 'We sincerely thank the public for their continued support, awareness, and cooperation as we remain committed to bringing Chad home,' the update concluded. Read the original article on People

Gwyneth Paltrow's latest role is ‘very temporary' Astronomer spokesperson
Just when we thought the Coldplay Jumbotron controversy had run its course, Gwyneth Paltrow has entered the chat. The Academy Award-winning actress and Goop founder appeared in a new – and very funny – ad for Astronomer, the tech firm whose former CEO and human resources chief launched a million memes after being shown on a Jumbotron at a Coldplay concert last week. 'I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer,' Paltrow said in the clip shared on the company's Instagram on Friday night, adding that Astronomer had received 'a lot of questions over the last few days.' In addition to her other hats, Paltrow, of course, is also the famously 'consciously uncoupled' ex-wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who at a concert in Boston last week inadvertently revealed an intimate moment between two top executives at Astronomer – who were seen embracing but immediately ducked from view – during a performance of Coldplay's 'Jumbotron Song.' 'Whoa, look at these two,' Martin quipped at the time. 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.' The moment caused a major internet sensation and an immediate spotlight on Astronomer. Both executives shown in the video have since resigned. In the clip featuring Paltrow on Friday, the 'questions' she addresses do not deal with the controversy, but rather the tech-focused business dealings of New York-based firm Astronomer. The clip's caption read simply, 'Thank you for your interest in Astronomer.'

Gwyneth Paltrow is Astronomer's ‘temporary spokesperson' in new video
There's a lot of buzz around Astronomer, the data infrastructure company that skyrocketed into public attention after its executives — now former executives — gave us the viral Coldplay 'kiss cam' moment. With all this recent popularity, the business brought on some extra help, hiring a 'temporary spokesperson' with experience in Coldplay internet fame: Gwyneth Paltrow. 'I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300+ employees at Astronomer,' the actress said in the minute-long video posted to social media Friday. 'Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones.' The Goop chief executive happens to be the ex-wife of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin and co-author of the original 'break-the-internet' breakup statement when the pair announced their 'conscious uncoupling' in 2014. If you're searching for answers to the company's real frequently-asked questions, you won't find them in the tongue-in-cheek clip. The questions 'OMG! What the actual f' and 'How is your social media team holding' get comically cut off by Paltrow as she explained the much less juicy details of Astronomer's business. 'We've been thrilled so many people have a newfound interest in data workflow automation,' Paltrow said. Astronomer's chief executive Andy Byron and human resources chief Kristin Cabot both resigned after they were filmed cuddling at a Coldplay concert in Boston earlier this month. They appeared on the arena video board in a 'kiss cam' segment before looking uncomfortable, with Cabot turning around and Byron ducking out of sight as Martin quipped from the stage that the two might be having an affair. Mark Borkowski, a British public relations and crisis consultant, described using Paltrow to front a video parodying the incident as 'utter genius' that shows the company has a sense of humor. 'It's a savvy use of media to create a viral moment,' he told The Washington Post in a phone interview Saturday. 'In a way you're laughing with everybody else.' Astronomer choosing Paltrow will not go unnoticed, Borkowski said. 'Astronomer is a meme now. Owning the ridiculous nature of how it became a meme is far better than apologizing for it.' A representative for Paltrow didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. As for how he advises clients caught in such situations, Borkowski said acting in a dignified way and 'using as few words as possible' is always the best approach. Paltrow's cameo is reminiscent of the scared Peloton wife discourse from 2019. After actress Monica Ruiz's worry-stricken expression in a Peloton holiday commercial became the butt of internet jokes, she laughed it off, later using her horrified face for an Aviation Gin ad. 'We will now be returning to what we do best: delivering game-changing results for our customers,' Paltrow closed out the ad. 'Thank you for your interest in Astronomer.'
