Auckland Airport has landed amongst the highest-ranking airports around the world in this year's SKYTRAX 2025 Airport Awards for 10-20 million annual passengers, coming in at #4 out of the top 10 list.
The independent SKYTRAX survey ranks global international airports for customer satisfaction including traveller experiences from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration through to departure at the gate.
Auckland Airport also ranked #46 for customer satisfaction across all airports globally.
In the Australia/Pacific category Auckland Airport maintained its #3 ranking, and the Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport Hotel ranked #3 for Best Airport Hotel in Australia/Pacific. This hotel is a joint venture with Tainui Group Holdings and opened in December 2023.
Scott Tasker, Chief Customer Officer of Auckland Airport, said the SKYTRAX ranking in the World Airport Awards is 'an awesome accolade for everyone working in our airport ecosystem – the Auckland Airport team, government border agencies, ground handlers, airlines, retail staff and the hundreds of other companies that help support the system to run smoothly'.
'We're committed to creating an airport that Kiwis are proud of and we're heartened travellers have recognised the value of the changes we're delivering,' said Mr Tasker.
'This news comes on top of research findings in 2024 from global insights firm Ipsos that shows 80% of New Zealanders think airports are the best-performing infrastructure in the country.'
Auckland Airport's runway is the hardest working in New Zealand, supporting over 400 flight movements per day. Each year there's $35.1 billion of economic output from international and domestic travel and tourism generated by Auckland Airport aviation connections, and $26 billion in annual trade flowing through the airport.
'Our infrastructure programme is progressing quickly and the improvements are really starting to make a difference to customers. We've opened the Transport Hub at the front entrance to the international terminal and we've been upgrading wayfinding signage to make it clear to customers where to go.
'MPI have also enabled an express lane at the international terminal, which has helped create efficient processing while maintaining border security. This, along with the uptake in the New Zealand Traveller Declaration has allowed a smoother arrival for customers coming in from international destinations. Aviation Security have been rolling out CT scanners across both terminals, meaning travellers can leave laptops and items in their carry on at the security checkpoint, which has meant shorter queues for customers.
'We've also been making improvements at the domestic terminal while we're building the new integrated terminal. This has included modernised bathroom facilities, new flooring, updated dwell spaces and plenty of seating. he said.
Skytrax is a United Kingdom–based research consultancy headquartered in London that runs an airline and airport review website as well as taking surveys from international travellers to rate airports, airlines, airline lounges, in-flight entertainment, on-board catering, and several other elements of air travel.
Singapore's Changi Airport was #1 airport in the world for the 13th time, followed by Doha Hamad.

The perils of picking the perfect plane movie
The most important part of any holiday is what you choose to watch on the flight there and back, writes Alex Casey. I cannot even begin to express to you how much the guy across the aisle was fanging to watch The Crow (2024). Most of us were still finding our seats, stowing our carry-on and steeling our wills for the 17-hour flight ahead of us, but he was already somehow into double digits on the duration, utterly transfixed by last year's ' unfathomably awful ' Bill Skarsgård reboot. Far from ridiculing this man, I envied him. He demonstrated the same self-assuredness of another passenger I had encountered accidentally sitting in my seat on a previous flight. The screen revealed he was already deep into Michael Jackson's greatest hits playlist and, after the smooth criminal soon found his allocated seat, we all celebrated with an extremely tinny 'Billie Jean' leaking through his flimsy Emirates headphones once more. In-flight entertainment is particularly crucial for New Zealanders. If you are woke enough to know what the hell it even says on those confusing little black books, you probably also know that we require at least the duration of two feature length films to fly anywhere deemed 'overseas'. To get to Japan you will need 11 hours. To get to New York you will need 16 hours. To reach London Heathrow, you'll need at least a full 24 hour day. We're gonna need more than just quizzes to get us through. You'd think this type of long-haul endurance flying would make us savvier than most when it comes to curating our in-flight entertainment. Alas, on a recent 17-hour flight from Auckland to Dubai, I witnessed dozens of New Zealanders completely lose their minds in a prison of indecision. One person watched an entire season of The White Lotus, but completely out of order. Another watched two minutes of Iron Man, then two minutes of Frozen 2, then immediately fell asleep to Avatar 2. To be absolutely clear, I am also one of these people (made a 40+ hour watchlist including Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Joker 2: Folie a Deux, watched five minutes of Lilo and Stitch chased down by an episode of… Scare Tactics??). If you too find yourself riddled with indecision and neuroses, here are eight simple rules to successfully select movies for your next long haul flight. 1. Horror seldom works out One of the craziest mistakes among the many that I made was popping on Steven Soderbergh's Presence, a slow-burning spooky thriller shot from the POV of a ghost, right as the lights went up and the trolleys of sweaty omelettes started trundling past for breakfast. Anything remotely scary requires the right atmosphere to build tension, and hurtling through the sky in a sealed fart tube is simply not it. I also watched the opening scene of The Monkey, and promptly turned it off following the first disembowelment because the children in the row behind me were crying. 2. Backfill the critical darlings If there's a festival, foreign, or Oscar-nominated film on offer, or any film that you nearly paid cold hard cash to see at the cinema: watch it on the plane. You are earning back the price of a $20 ticket with every choice, and given that I put away The Apprentice, Kneecap, The Last Showgirl and The Outrun on just one leg, I earned back a tidy $80 entirely through sitting on my arse. That's not 'girl math' by the way, that's just math. Girl math is the fact that I watched all of The Last Showgirl even though I found it to be quite a bore, all because I still feel bad for how we all treated Pamela Anderson. 3. Beware the boxset I saw a couple of confident folks immediately ripping into franchises like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings from the very beginning, implicitly committing to watching the full boxset for the entirety of the flight. Again, I admire and envy the conviction, but I worry about this avenue. What if you fall asleep before they've even taken the hobbits to Isengard? There's also a question of legacy: do you want to forever remember your trip to Europe where you got surprise engaged under the Eiffel Tower as 'The Harry Potter holiday'? Just something to think about. 4. Avoid novelty choices I know a long haul flight is a liminal space, and sometimes crossing certain time zones means you are gifted extra hours on the clock, but that doesn't mean you have to watch Air Fryers: Are They Worth It? because it might make for a funny joke one day. Same goes for buzzed-about stinkers like Megalopolis and It Ends With Us, which I hovered over thinking 'well if not now, then when?' In the immortal words of Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, which the person next to me watched half of before switching to Encanto: 'your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.' 5. Old is often gold Guy Montgomery has a joke about watching 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time on a tiny screen on a long-haul flight, just as Stanley Kubrick intended. While it does feel hugely disrespectful and discordant to experience the classics of cinema on a plane, there's something thrilling about watching something a relic of the past while propelling through the skies in anticipation of the near future. There's also a hallucinogenic quality to so many old movies that they can also work as a drug-free trip when you are sleep-deprived and dehydrated. For example, I watched Whatever Happened To Baby Jane (1967) and had cool dreams of crazed Bette Davis in a nightie waiting for me at immigration. 6. Animal anything always Whenever I got up to stroll the cabins, one thing was abundantly clear: people of all stripes really, really love that movie featuring Steve Coogan and an animated penguin. Any film that could have a pull quote describing 'a true story of wit, warmth, and cute [insert any animal] antics' is always going to over well when you are feeling vulnerable, anxious or homesick in the skies. My personal highlights from this genre were Paddington in Peru and a National Geographic documentary about the close relationship between a Scottish man and a river otter named Molly. Five stars. 7. Let the tears flow freely Being on a long flight strips you of all distractions and reduces you to your base elements: you eat, you sleep, you excrete. It always means you are likely to feel your emotions more deeply, whether that be boiling rage at the nearby passenger picking their nose and eating it, or unbridled joy at the sight of a single slice of fresh fruit. It can also mean you are more prone to tears: and lots of them. I was in full shoulder-shaking sobs during Bridget Jones 4: Mad About the Boy and the cabin crew didn't even blink, ditto during We Live in Time. Beware though: at 30,000 feet, even Harry and the Hendersons will make you weep (reminded me of my dog). 8. Short on time? Go sitcom Find yourself with less than 90 mins before landing? Don't start a movie and promise to finish it when you get home, because you will either forget entirely or have to watch the whole thing from the start again. Instead, beloved sitcoms are your best friend here. With 20 minutes until landing, I cracked open season five of The Office US and watched the weight loss episode, instantly giddy with silent laughter and trails of tears down my cheeks. Sure, much of the episode would be cancelled in 2025, but you're not in 2025 in the sky. You're on plane time.

The Government says it's fixing the cost of living, so what happens if voters don't believe it?
It was clearly designed to assuage fears, fanned by the Opposition, that the Government had put the entire Crown infrastructure build on ice, leading to the mass exodus of construction labour to Australia. The tactic isn't an unfair one. All Governments indulge in the vice of reannouncing things to focus attention on them. A billion or so dollars spent on a road earns the Government a few hundred bites of the PR cherry, or so the political arithmetic goes. So no, the tactic wasn't unfair or even ridiculous - but nor was Labour's criticism that a fair whack of the projects were funded by the last Government. (Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop's riposte that Labour might have funded some of the projects, but it certainly didn't do a good job of delivering them, was equally true.) This early success evaporated on Monday, when Luxon held one of the most bizarre press conferences since taking office. Alongside Finance Minister Nicola Willis, he spoke for more than 10 minutes to mark the first anniversary of the Government's tax package coming into effect. Photo / Mark Mitchell Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with reannouncing something old. Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern liked to mark anniversaries too. Some years, she'd put out a press release celebrating the fact that superannuation payments were increasing in line with wages - despite the fact that this annual increase is written into primary legislation. But Monday's announcement, coming as voters' economic sentiment bounces along the bottom and the country seems on the verge of rioting over the butter price, seemed vacuous. There was something ever so faintly Soviet about a Government thinking that, simply by telling voters it had a policy to fix their problems, they'd believe those problems were being fixed. There are two obvious pathways for how the next few months might pan out. The Government is clinging to several good forward economic indicators: business confidence surveys report okay-ish vibes from firms and suggest something of a recovery next year; the primary sector, far from being the villain of the butter crisis, is driving an export-led recovery in the regions; the Reserve Bank is likely to continue cutting interest rates, spurring investment and growth in 2026, giving Luxon an economic tailwind of good vibes and rising house prices in election year. The snow will soon melt, the ground will thaw, and New Zealanders may spend their summer holidays contemplating having endured the worst of it. Luxon and his colleagues may return to work in January, set the election date and wonder what on earth they were so worried about in winter. That's one scenario, sure. There's another. For every positive data point, there is an equally negative one. The Reserve Bank's GDP tracker suggests what every New Zealander feels in their bones: the economy has been shrinking, and could shrink further. A small recession, measured by the glib but powerful two-negative-quarters definition, could be on the cards. The most recent ANZ business confidence survey showed residential construction intentions tanking, to use the words of the bank's economists. If things continue to follow that negative trajectory, another scenario opens up: one of panic, as the once-distant prospect of a first-term defeat becomes more plausible. If the economy continues to worsen, and National's polling materialises into gloomy party vote numbers, don't entirely rule out a leadership change. A change is not 'on' - you'd be a fool to put money on it — but you'd also be a fool to bet against it. There's no real affection for Luxon in the caucus room, and National has little patience for underperformance, particularly from its leaders. Luxon's intense self-belief could count against him. He does not seem to observe that, of all his frontbenchers, he is the one who is struggling the most. Despite the whole Cabinet fighting fires on every front, National's ministers do a decent job of rebuffing their Labour opposite numbers during Question Time. Health Minister Simeon Brown has come under the most pressure, but has so far survived in the House. Chris Bishop seems unbothered by Kieran McAnulty and seemed to be enjoying himself on Thursday when he answered finance questions on behalf of Willis, who was away (the caucus enjoyed it too). Photo / Ola Thorsen Luxon is the most challenged of the lot and was devoured, degustation-style, by Chris Hipkins in the debating chamber this week. Hipkins, who can excel in the House when he wants to, wasn't even trying a particularly sophisticated line of questioning. He resorted to a past Luxon tactic of using each supplementary question to list another case of something going terribly wrong in the economy - migration to Australia, construction jobs, board director remuneration - and then asking the Prime Minister what he thinks about it. Luxon should be able to answer questions like that easily, but could not. His belief in the power of political marketing is so fundamental that he undervalues the importance of backing up that marketing with substance; even more than most prime ministers, he's too quick to answer every question with a canned line and not quick enough to respond by substantively dismantling the question and defending himself. He seems to think this doesn't matter. He's disdainful of Question Time, or of anything that happens in Wellington. But it does matter - and you could tell from the ashen faces behind Luxon as he answered Hipkins' questions that the backbench is worried. If the economy doesn't turn around meaningfully, there's a chance the Government could be in serious trouble, however scary they think a Labour-Green-Te Pāti Māori Government might be. Slumps such as this one are difficult for centre-right governments. They're instinctively anti-intervention. When the public demands 'something must be done', centre-left governments have no shortage of ideas for that 'something'. Photo / Mark Mitchell For the right, recovery comes from automatic stabilisers like benefits doing their job, before the fiscal part of the Government gets out of the way of the monetary side, allowing the reduction of interest rates to encourage firms to borrow and invest. It's a less politically attractive recovery because it involves substantially less ribbon-cutting, but that doesn't make it any less sensible a strategy. Ultimately, however much a government tries to pump-prime an economy back to life with fiscal policy, eventually private firms will need to pick up some slack too - and that means low interest rates. Luxon, to his credit, has been explicitly articulating this as his vision for the economic recovery. Last month, he successfully rebuffed one of Hipkins' questions, noting that the construction sector was 'hit hard because of high interest rates. High interest rates happened because Government spending was out of control, and you let inflation get out of control'. Not bad. Grim economic times will always be tough for a government, but they needn't be as tough as these. Back in 2012, net migration to Australia was even higher than it is now and the unemployment rate, in September of that year, was higher than at any point in the past 25 years. Yet that economic malaise failed to find its way into politics. National's party vote polling peaked at 48.8% in October 2012, rising - strangely - in tandem with the unemployment rate. Prime Minister John Key's popularity was unassailable. A government can be popular when an economy is under strain. But that appears to require the public to have faith that the government has a plan to make things better. Voters don't have that faith currently and, after this week, who could blame them?

Burnt flat whites, $101 brunch and screaming foxes: What it's like to be a Kiwi in London
So while I was busy Googling 'Harry Styles Hampstead Heath sightings' and 'Soho apartments', he was doing the important stuff like sorting visas, booking flights, and finding an Airbnb for our first week there. He was prepared, I wasn't. Guess who was shocked when we landed? After three hours in London, which included battling Oxford St (hell), navigating the Tube (chaos), and paying £45 for a sub-par breakfast ($101, because we were still converting), I decided my best friend's brother was right: it was a sh**hole - but I also felt an overwhelming sense I was going to love it here. Fifteen months later, I can confirm: I do. It's everything I wanted and more, but that's not to say it doesn't come with some culture shocks. A screaming fox From hearing a fox scream at 2am, becoming a human sardine on the Tube, or trying to find a flat white that doesn't taste like burnt milk, it's been a ride, and that's before we talk about the sushi. I once paid £8 for a lukewarm chicken avocado roll that tasted like disappointment and uncleaned fridge. The wildest quirk, though, has to be the people. Before moving here, I thought Brits were basically like us, just with better TV. I was wrong. Londoners (the born-and-bred kind) aren't exactly rude, they're just not nice either. At my first job, I got chatting to a colleague. We were vibing, or so I thought, then mid-sentence, she looked at her computer screen and didn't speak to me for the rest of the day. I got semi-ghosted, at work, in daylight hours. Every Kiwi I know has a similar story. Why do they do it? We have no idea. Maybe they just can't keep up with the chat. Maybe it's their version of boundaries. Either way, I now treat every office conversation like it could be my last. That's partly why my partner and I ended up making friends mostly with other Kiwis and Aussies — for the banter, but also the comfort, and that's not the only home away from home comfort. While we may struggle explaining what 'yeah nah' means, it's easy to get our hands on the essentials: lamingtons, lolly cake, Pic's Peanut Butter, and even Milo, thanks to cafes like Proud Mary's, Butter Beans, and Ozone. Tumeke Pies has the goods too, and Clint from Kiwis in London always knows where to go. And the All Blacks, they're a bigger part of my life here than at home. Whether it's 7am or 9pm, Kiwis flock to a pub (usually found via the Kiwis in London Facebook group) wearing jerseys, pint in hand, no idea what day it is, just screaming at a screen like it's a mini Eden Park, only with more Guinness and less sun. Other perks include cheap holidays, experiences you couldn't have back home, a sense of independence, and so much more. Rent, however, is wild. We paid double what we did in Auckland CBD, and now that we've got our own place, it's nearly triple. It's worth it, though. We've ticked off a bunch of dreamy European destinations, and my career - which now spans freelance copywriting, a bit of PR, and being a full-time entertainment journalist on TikTok - has gone completely bonkers. In the past year, I've been to the Brit Awards with reality TV royalty, roamed Glastonbury with the Spotify team, come face-to-face with Louis Tomlinson, and landed invites to premieres I used to only dream about. Lillie at this year's Brit Awards in the O2 Arena in London. So, for anyone considering the move, or anyone with a child, cousin, or flatmate already here, yes, it's a sh**hole, but it's also the greatest city in the world — and for every overpriced rent payment or underwhelming roast, there's a night where you catch the Tube home, tipsy with opportunity, and think: how can I live here forever?
