Six Naxalites carrying Rs 17 lakh bounty surrender in parts of Chhattisgarh

Six Naxalites, including a couple, carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 17 lakh on their heads, surrendered before security forces in two districts of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, officials said. While four Naxalites surrendered in Narayanpur district, the couple laid down arms in Kawardha town in Kabirdham district, they said.The four Naxalites -- Sameer Kashyap, Baisakhu Nureti alias Devlal alias Amit, Phulmati alias Phulo and Kamal Singh alias Kamalesh Usendi -- turned themselves in citing disappointment with the "hollow" and "inhuman" Maoist ideology and growing differences within the Maoist outfit, a police official said. They were active in the Kutul Area Committee of the Naxal organisation, he said.Amit, who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh, was active as a press team commander/Area Committee Member (ACM) of the outlawed Maoist outfit, he added. Kashyap was Maad Division Communication team Commander, Phulo was Local Organisation Squad (LOS) as well as press team member and Kamlesh was a militia member, the official said. Kashyap had a reward of Rs 3 lakh and two others carried a bounty of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads, he added. They were also impressed by the state government's 'Niyad Nellanar' (your good village) scheme, aimed at facilitating development works in remote villages around security camps, he said, adding that 101 Naxalites have quit violence in the district so far this year.The surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 50,000 each and will be further rehabilitated as per the government's policy, he said. The couple, who surrendered in Kabirdham, was identified as Ramesh alias Atam Guddu (29) and his wife Savita alias Lachhi Oyam (21). They laid down arms in Kawardha town, the headquarter of the district, citing internal tussles in the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), the inhuman ideology of the movement and harsh forest life, another official said."They were active in MMC (Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh) zone of Maoists. Ramesh was a member of platoon no. 1 and Gondia (Maharashtra)-Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh)-Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh)- GRB division committee of Maoists. Savita was part of the Tanda area committee. Ramesh and Savita were carrying bounties of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively," he said. "They were involved in Naxal activities for the last eight years in the MMC zone. In 2019, Ramesh sustained injuries in an encounter in Bhoramdeo police station area," he added.According to the police, Naxalites have been making efforts since 2017-18 to set up their new base in the tri-junction forest of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh (MMC- zone) , which comprises areas of Balaghat (MP), Gondia (Maharashtra) as well as Rajnandgaon, Mungeli and Kabirdham districts in Chhattisgarh. "The two surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 25,000 each. They will be further rehabilitated as per the government's policy," the official added.

Singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria claims he was shot at in Gurgaon
Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria has alleged that unknown assailants in a car shot at him on Monday on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) near Badshahpur in Gurgaon's Sector 71. He escaped unhurt. Police said a probe has been launched into the incident. 'No one has been injured, nor has any vehicle been hit by a bullet in this incident. An officer said that a team immediately rushed to the spot as soon as they got the information. A senior officer said the CCTV cameras installed nearby are being checked to identify the accused. Sources said police had earlier received a tip-off over a threat to a singer living in Gurgaon. The singer-rapper, who has been promoting Haryanvi folk music, has several hits to his credit. In 2014, he rose to fame with his rap song 'Ladki Kar Gayi Chull', which also featured in the Bollywood movie 'Kapoor and Sons', starring Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Fawad Khan. Fazilpuria had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election in 2024 from Gurgaon as a Jannayak Janta Party candidate against Congress's Raj Babbar and BJP's Rao Inderjit Singh, who was elected. The JJP was founded in 2018 by Dushyant Chautala, former deputy chief minister of Haryana. Last year, he was booked by the Gurgaon Police along with YouTuber Elvish Yadav, for allegedly using rare species of snakes and a .32 bore pistol in a music video. The duo was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with allegations linked to money laundering and rave parties. The agency had confiscated movable and immovable assets worth over Rs 58 lakh allegedly belonging to the duo under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a similar snake venom case registered by the Noida Police.

No ready-mix concrete plants operating within SGNP; Rs 221 crore sanctioned for fencing work: HC told
The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) authorities have told the Bombay High Court that no ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant is operating within the SGNP boundary. The authorities further said that to construct boundary wall around SGNP division, the state government has issued 18 Government Resolutions (GRs) so far, granting administrative sanction of Rs 221 crore for construction of boundary wall. Anita Patil, Conservator of Forests and Director, SGNP, Borivali on July 11 filed an affidavit in response to a contempt plea by NGO Conservation Action Trust alleging non-compliance of HC orders of 1997 and 2003 that directed authorities to clear the SGNP area and ensure no further encroachments in SGNP area. The NGO had argued before a division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep V Marne that the government was in brazen contempt of past court orders and had failed to fence the entire area. It had also claimed that there were certain RMC plants operating within SGNP boundaries. The HC had earlier asked the government to prepare a plan and avail required approvals for fencing the national park. The affidavit added that Rs 74.28 crore were received in Financial Year 2024-25 and has been paid over to the Public Works Department for execution of necessary work and tenders have been issued for 17 such works for boundary wall construction. The authority added that the acceptance of seven bids had been forwarded to the government by Chief Engineer PWD and the scrutiny of technical and financial bids received for other 10 tenders was in progress. 'There are no RMC plants either situated in or operating within Sanjay Gandhi National Park Boundary,' the affidavit added. An association of residents from slums at SGNP, Samyak Janhit Seva Sanstha has also filed a plea seeking alternative accommodation. The affidavit stated that as per prevailing circumstances, 'the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive policy for rehabilitation of all eligible encroachments is imperative.' 'In view of the existing ground realities pertaining to the nature and extent of encroachments, the selective removal of only commercial structures in isolation is extremely difficult,' the authority added.

Income Tax department launches nationwide verification to combat fraudulent claims in I-T returns
Representative image NEW DELHI: The income tax department Monday launched a nationwide verification operation targeting individuals and entities facilitating fraudulent claims of deductions and exemptions in I-T returns. The exercise is not limited to deductions for donations to little-known political parties and charities but also those related to health insurance and medical expenses (Sec 80D and 80DDB of I-T Act), HRA (Sec 10(13A), interest on education and home loans and for purchase of vehicles (Sec 80E, 80EE and 80EEB), CBDT said. Those under lens are MNC staff, public sector companies, government bodies, academic institutions and entrepreneurs who have claimed deductions without valid justification, it said. I-T department tapped many databases to identify likely offenders The I-T department is now poised to take stern action against continued fraudulent claims, including penalties and prosecution wherever applicable. It said that investigations have uncovered "organised rackets" operated by certain ITR preparers and intermediaries, who have been filing returns claiming fictitious deductions and exemptions. The move is a signal to individuals who take shortcuts and make claims without having evidence of deductions or expenses shown in returns. Tax authorities tapped multiple databases to identify likely offenders. It conducted search and seizures in several states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, and MP, where it found evidence of fraudulent claims. CBDT said the actions follow an outreach conducted programme, asking taxpayers to revise their returns in case discrepancies were noticed. "As a result, around 40,000 taxpayers have updated their returns in last four months, voluntarily withdrawing false claims amounting to Rs 1,045 crore. However, many remain non-compliant, possibly under influence of masterminds behind these evasion rackets," it said.
