The official summary for The Phoenician Scheme reads, 'Anatole 'Zsa-zsa' Korda (Del Toro) is ruthless, unscrupulous and one of the richest men in Europe. 'During the final stages of a vast, decades-long, career-defining business project, Korda survives a sixth assassination attempt and must appoint a successor: his long-estranged daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton) — a nun. With personal tutor Bjorn (Michael Cera) in tow, the trio set off on a globetrotting adventure to achieve Korda's epic mission. Co-written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme also stars Tom Hanks, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Imad Mardnli and Benedict Cumberbatch. 'The Phoenician Scheme' Began With An Image Wes Anderson Had Of Benicio Del Toro Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme held its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May. Oddly enough, Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter, he first spoke of the idea with Benicio Del Toro at Cannes in 2021. 'I had an idea that I actually brought up to Benicio at Cannes when we showed The French Dispatch,' Anderson recalled for THR. 'We talked about it briefly, and I didn't really know what it was, but I had the image of Benicio playing a Euro business tycoon, like somebody in an Antonioni movie. I could just see him in it; I could see him and his sunglasses. But one of the main inspirations — along with a handful of real European businessmen — but the more personal connection is my wife's father [Fouad Malouf]. He's Lebanese, and he was an amazing kind of larger-than-life figure, and I really loved him,' Anderson added. 'The thing about him was he was somebody who [was] wise and very intelligent, but a little bit scary. It was always good to walk into a restaurant with him because everything got taken care of immediately. There are many details of this character that draw on him.' The Phoenician Scheme premieres on streaming video on demand on Peacock on July 25 and is also available now on PVOD.

Rumor: Reed Richards Won't Lead Avengers in Doomsday, These 2 Heroes Will
According to a new rumor, Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic might not be the leader of the eponymous superhero team in the upcoming MCU movies Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This comes after The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman indicated that Reed will lead the Avengers in those movies. Yelena Belova to lead the Avengers in Doomsday, not Reed Richards Industry scooper @MyTimeToShineH took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that, despite what has been previously reported, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova and Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson / Captain America, and not Reed, will lead the Avengers in the next team-up movies. 'Okay so I just checked with my source and they told me that Reed Richards is NOT the leader of the Avengers in Doomsday and Secret Wars,' @MyTimeToShineH posted. 'Sam and Yelena are the ones leading the team(s).' This contradicts what Shakman said in a new interview. 'He [Reed] goes from being the nerdy scientist who's locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who'd do anything to protect his family, to the guy who's leading the Avengers,' the filmmaker explained. As things stand, what @MyTimeToShineH shared on social media on this subject should be regarded as speculation. However, given how methodically Marvel has established Sam and Yelena as leaders of their respective Avengers groups in Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, one can presume that the studio might want to continue with those storylines at least for some time. If they give up the leadership immediately after the Fantastic Four's arrival on Earth-616, it could potentially render the two characters' journey across multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe projects somewhat inconsequential. Reed will appear alongside the rest of his team in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which hits US theaters on July 25, 2025. Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday premieres on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Originally reported by Tamal Kundu on SuperHeroHype. Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman says Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards will "lead the Avengers", and let's spare a thought for Sam Wilson
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman has just revealed who will be leading the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday. While speaking to Variety on the challenges of casting Reed Richards – a role that ultimately went to Pedro Pascal – Shakman said, "He goes from being the nerdy scientist who's locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who'd do anything to protect his family, to the guy who's leading the Avengers." Given Marvel's proclivity for keeping pretty much every story beat and spoiler under wraps, this certainly could be seen as a slip of the tongue on Shakman's part. Right now, all we know about the makeup of the Avengers comes from the tease found at the end of the Thunderbolts post-credits scene. There, the newly-christened 'New Avengers' (Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Yelena, Bob/Sentry, Ghost, and John Walker) are in a legal battle with Sam Wilson's Avengers over the rights to the name. They're also monitoring interstellar activity, which is when Fantastic Four's ship arrives on the scene (though Marvel boss Kevin Feige's comments about what it may or may not be have only muddied the waters). Now, it appears Mr. Fantastic will be leading the way for Earth's Mightiest Heroes as they remain on track for a showdown with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. Speaking to GamesRadar+, Shakman also let us in on another sliver of story information – Galactus will be on a "collision course" with Reed and Sue's child, Franklin. "What was so charming about this movie is it's about the tiniest, youngest thing in the world and the oldest, biggest thing in the universe," Shakman teased. Fantastic Four, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach hits cinemas on July 25.
