On Camera, 5-Storey House Collapses In Shimla Day After Evacuation Amid Heavy Rain
A 5-storey building collapsed in Shimla as heavy rain continued in Himachal Pradesh on Monday. A video has gone viral that shows the house crashing down like a stack of cards.
The owner, Anjana Verma, said that they had evacuated the building, Raj Niwas, last night due to relentless rain and landslides.
Ms Verma alleged that cracks had appeared in the building due to a nearby four-lane road construction.
Village deputy head, Yashpal Verma, also blamed the company involved in the construction and said the building developed cracks last year.
He said the company didn't stop the construction, and said that some other houses were also in danger.
'Red' Alert In Himachal Pradesh
The weather office on Sunday issued a "red" alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.
Of the 12 districts, the alert was issued for Shimla, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Kullu and Chamba.
The Met Office has also warned of landslides, waterlogging, damage to vulnerable structures, traffic congestion and disruptions in essential services.
The train service on the Shimla-Kalka railway line -- a UNESCO world heritage site -- was also disrupted on Sunday as boulders and trees fell on the track near Solan's Koti area after heavy rain.
A landslide near Koti on the Shimla-Kalka national highway, which connects Shimla and Chandigarh, damaged some stretches of the road, resulting in a two-to-three-km-long traffic jam for hours.
The rain has reportedly led to the closure of 129 roads in Himachal Pradesh, with the maximum damage to roads reported from Sirmaur and Mandi districts, where 57 and 44 roads were blocked, respectively.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the deputy commissioners of Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts to order a closure of schools on Monday.

England Records Warmest June With Temperature Hitting 33.6 Degrees Celsius
United Kingdom: England last month experienced its warmest June since records began in 1884, while the UK recorded its second-warmest June over the same period, the meteorological office said on Tuesday. The announcement of the provisional figures also coincided with Britain recording its hottest day of the year so far, as much of Europe swelters from an early summer heatwave. The mercury hit 33.6 degrees Celsius Tuesday in southeast England, topping the previous hottest day on June 21. The Met Office said England saw a record mean temperature of 16.9 degrees Celcius (62 degrees Fahrenheit) for June. The UK's mean temperature last month was only surpassed in June 2023, it added. Last month had two heatwaves in parts of England and Wales, which recorded its third warmest June. It followed the UK -- otherwise known for its damp and cool weather -- also experiencing its warmest and sunniest spring in over a century in 2025. "Past studies have shown it is virtually certain that human influence has increased the occurrence and intensity of extreme heat events such as this," Met Office climate scientist Amy Doherty said. On June 30, temperatures soared above 32 degrees Celcius, with Wimbledon recording its hottest ever opening day and implementing a heat rule to protect players' health. Amber heat alerts -- which warn of a risk to vulnerable people and pressure on the health service -- were in place across parts of England. The UK also saw higher than average sunshine across all four of its nations in June, according to the latest figures. A Met Office study last month said the country could experience more extreme and prolonged heat due to human-driven climate change. Around the world, scientists say the increase in greenhouse gas emissions as a result of burning fossil fuels is driving freak weather events.

More showers for five more days: Met
1 2 Kolkata: Higher than the mean monthly, rainy days kept the city's June mercury in check. Even though the city did not experience any heavy rain spell on Tuesday, 11.7 mm of rain till late evening and a partly cloudy sky were enough to ensure the mercury stayed below normal. While the Met office has ruled out the possibility of heavy rain in the next few days, it has forecast more showers for at least five days, which would keep the city cool. "The monsoon flow is in good form, and hence many parts of Bengal will continue to get rain. While the rain spells are likely to be light to moderate in Kolkata, some districts could get isolated heavy rain. Overall, the city will continue to get some rain every day," said meteorologist HR Biswas, head of Weather Forecast Section at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. Climatologically, the mean number of rainy days in June for Kolkata is 12.6 days. The monsoon arrived in the city on June 17. Despite the late arrival, a series of pre-monsoon showers and frequent rain spells since the monsoon onset led the city to experience rain on 19 days in June, surpassing the mean monthly rainy days for the month. "In Kolkata, we can expect the maximum temperature to hover between 30 to 33 degrees in six to seven days, while the minimum temperature can swing between 26 to 27 degrees. Spells of rain will continue to prevent the mercury from rising above normal for now," added Biswas. A low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha that brought rain in the past few days has now moved over to Jharkhand and its neighbourhood.
