From free power to makhana board, Nitish hails PM Modi's development push
Nitish Kumar
on Friday disclosed that the decision to provide 125 units of free power per house in the state was "on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi".
While sharing dais with Modi at Motihari, Nitish said, "We respect him (Modi) a lot and we have been working in a manner that is in keeping with his advice."
Modi responded to the remark by folding his hands.
The CM also thanked Modi for taking time off to visit different parts of Bihar almost every month.
Lauding Modi for his assistance in development of Bihar, Nitish said, "PM announced a significant financial package for the state in July 2024 Union Budget, focusing on roads, health, industry, tourism, and flood control. Following this, the Feb 2025 Union Budget included announcements for the establishment of a Makhana Board, an airport, and financial support for the Western Kosi Canal in Bihar."
"Recently, the central govt provided Bihar with the opportunity to host the Khelo India Youth Games, which is a matter of pride for the state. I pay my respects to the Prime Minister. He is doing excellent work. I once again extend my greetings and thanks to the PM. He visits Bihar and inaugurates and lays the foundation for various development projects," Nitish said.
Assailing his previous Congress and RJD-led govts for poor development, the CM said, "You all know how the condition in the state before 2005 was.
No work was done. On Nov 24, 2005, when the NDA govt was formed here, we started working on development. We have been working for the growth of Bihar for 20 years. Earlier, Bihar's annual budget used to be only Rs 24,000 crore. Now it has increased to more than Rs 3 lakh crore. Work is being done in the interest of the people.
I thank the Prime Minister for his special attention to Bihar."
In his address,
PM Modi

He said Nitish govt has provided jobs to millions of youths in the state with complete transparency and has also resolved to create employment opportunities on a large scale. "Through the Jeevika Didi scheme, Nitish Kumar has paved the way for women to become self-reliant. The Nitish govt has increased the social security pension scheme from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100 per month, with the money being directly deposited into the beneficiaries' bank accounts.
This decision will bring significant relief to the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and widowed sisters," the PM said.

Rift between AIADMK and BJP widening, say CPI & CPM state secretaries
COIMBATORE/TIRUVARUR: The rift within the AIADMK-BJP alliance is widening, said CPI state secretary R Mutharasan and CPI (M) state secretary P Shanmugam on Saturday. The left leaders cited the lack of unanimity among AIADMK and BJP leaders on the goal of forming a coalition government by both the allies in the state after the next Assembly poll. 'Amit Shah states that the AIADMK-BJP alliance will form a coalition government, while Edappadi K Palaniswami asserts that he is the chief ministerial candidate. Cracks are widening daily within the AIADMK-BJP alliance,' Mutharasan said in Coimbatore while referring to the different stands of the BJP leader and AIADMK general secretary. Mutharasan was in Coimbatore to attend CPI's district conference. 'Does Palaniswami encourage BJP's New Education Policy and misuse of investigative agencies such as ED, NIA, etc?' Mutharasan asked while also recalling that former Chief Minister late J Jayalalithaa had vowed the AIADMK would not form an alliance with the BJP henceforth. Mutharasan hoped Edappadi K Palaniswami would hold a clean campaign in the run-up to the election. Speaking to reporters in Tiruvarur, CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam, meanwhile, accused Palaniswami of supporting all anti-people, -farmer and -state actions of the BJP-led union government. 'Edappadi should apologise to farmers for supporting the anti-farmer laws,' the CPI(M) leader demanded. Shanmugam claimed the National Democratic Alliance in the state is torn by confusion. 'Like Amit Shah, BJP's former state leader K Annamalai and others are also asserting there will be a coalition government in Tamil Nadu. But Palaniswami continues to claim that they will form a government with a clear majority. There is confusion within the BJP-AIADMK alliance, and the AIADMK is weakening,' he claimed. Shanmugam also rebutted Palaniswami's claim that his party accepted money from the DMK. 'We have already explained this a hundred times. We received money from the DMK for election expenses, but we handed it back exactly as it was received. Not even a single tea was consumed by the Communist Party from that amount,' he added.

Rubio demands Syrian government forces intervene to prevent jihadist attacks
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday (July 19, 2025) called on the Syrian government's security forces to prevent jihadists from entering and 'carrying out massacres' in the conflict-stricken south of the country. 'If authorities in Damascus want to preserve any chance of achieving a unified, inclusive and peaceful Syria... they must help end this calamity by using their security forces to prevent ISIS and any other violent jihadists from entering the area and carrying out massacres,' Mr. Rubio said in a statement posted to X, using another name for the Islamic State group (IS). Sectarian clashes between armed Bedouin forces and the Druze in the community's Sweida heartland had drawn in Syria's Islamist-led government, Israel and other armed tribes. U.S.-brokered negotiations have sought to avert further Israeli military intervention, with Syrian forces agreeing to withdraw from the region. 'The U.S. has remained heavily involved over the last three days with Israel, Jordan and authorities in Damascus on the horrifying & dangerous developments in southern Syria,' Mr. Rubio said. He called for the Syrian government to 'hold accountable and bring to justice anyone guilty of atrocities including those in their own ranks.' 'Furthermore the fighting between Druze and Bedouin groups inside the perimeter must also stop immediately,' Mr. Rubio added. Once in control of large swathes of Syria, the IS was territorially defeated in Syria in 2019 largely due to the efforts of Kurdish-led forces supported by an international coalition. Violence between the Druze and Bedouin groups that began on July 13 has left an estimated 940 dead, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor. The count included 326 Druze fighters and 262 Druze civilians, 165 of whom were summarily executed, according to the Observatory. The monitor also included 312 government security personnel and 21 Sunni Bedouin in the toll.
