Marni Yang in court continuing bid to overturn murder conviction for death of former Bear Shaun Gayle's girlfriend
Yang is serving a double life sentence for the shooting death of Rhoni Reuter and her unborn child in 2007. Reuter was found dead in her Deerfield condo that October.
At the time she was Gayle's girlfriend. Prosecutors say Yang and Gayle were also romantically involved, and she was jealous of Reuter.
Yang was convicted in 2011. In court, prosecutors played a recording her confessing to the crime to a friend who was wearing a wire.
Yang's attorneys have claimed the confession came as their client tried to protect others from being arrested, and that they ignored evidence showing she was innocent.
Yang's attorneys announced they would appeal her conviction in 2023.

Police: 5-year-old boy wounded by unintentional gunshot inside south Lansing home
LANSING —A 5-year-old boy was wounded July 14 from what Lansing police said was an unintentional gunshot that happened inside a south Lansing home. Police were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of Vincent Court, northeast of South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and West Jolly Road, at about 3 p.m. because of a shooting, said Jordan Gulkis, spokesperson for the Lansing Police Department in a text. "When officers arrived, they found a 5-year-old boy with a gunshot wound," she said, adding that Lansing firefighters transported him to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. AOC Just Tweeted What So Many Are Thinking After Trump's Sudden 180 On The Epstein Files
New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) torched President Donald Trump in an X post on Friday, calling him a 'rapist' over the administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Related: 'Wow who would have thought that electing a rapist would have complicated the release of the Epstein Files?' the congresswoman wrote. @AOC / Via Trump was found civilly liable in 2023 for sexual abuse and defamation of columnist E. Jean Carroll. He maintains his innocence. Related: The Trump administration faces a slew of public backlash, including from its own fanbase, for going back on its promises of releasing the 'client list' that some believe Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, used to blackmail powerful figures. Earlier this year, Attorney General Pam Bondi claimed the client list was on her desk. But her Department of Justice said in a memo with the FBI this week that there was no evidence Epstein had such a list. The memo also sparked outrage by stating that Epstein's death was definitively a suicide, contradicting theories popular with the MAGA base that foul play was involved. Related: FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino is reportedly threatening to quit after getting into an argument with Bondi over claims that he leaked stories to the media about his agency's dissatisfaction over the case being closed. The congresswoman's comments came over a month after billionaire and former Trump ally Elon Musk alleged the president was in Epstein's files in a fit of rage against his so-called 'Big Beautiful Bill.' Related: Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, railed against Ocasio-Cortez's Friday remarks. 'AOC likes to play pretend like she's from the block, but in reality she's just a sad, miserable blockhead who is trying to overcompensate for her lack of self-confidence that has followed her for her entire life,' he said in a statement sent to The Daily Beast. 'Instead, she should get some serious help for her obvious and severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her pea-sized brain,' he added. Ocasio-Cortez previously called Trump a rapist at a rally in April, stating, 'When he talks about 'rapists and 'criminals,' he should look in the mirror.' California tax expert admits role in illegal alien's multimillion-dollar fraud scheme
A California tax preparer pleaded guilty Monday to helping an illegal immigrant file fraudulent federal income tax returns that claimed $25 million in refunds, the Justice Department said. Victor Cruz, 40, of Bakersfield, helped Miguel Martinez, a Mexican national who was in the United States illegally, carry out the scheme from November 2019 through June 2023, prosecutors said. Martinez allegedly used stolen identities to create fake businesses and report phony wage and withholding information for the businesses to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He then allegedly submitted hundreds of income tax returns using the stolen identities while claiming that they worked for the fake businesses and were owed tax refunds based on the phony information. Cruz prepared and filed more than 500 of the fraudulent tax returns, authorities said. In exchange, Cruz received thousands of dollars in fees from Martinez in exchange for his services. The IRS actually paid out $2.3 million of the $25 million in refunds that were claimed. Martinez has pleaded guilty for his role in the scheme and was sentenced to six years in prison. Cruz is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 17, 2025. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
