Chelsea's Maresca fumes at Real Betis having 48 hours longer to prepare for final

Yahoo27-05-2025
Enzo Maresca has hit out at Real Betis being given an extra two days to prepare for the Uefa Conference League final against Chelsea.
Maresca, whose immediate focus is on ensuring that his side seal Champions League qualification when they visit Nottingham Forest on Sunday, did not hide his displeasure at the scheduling around next Wednesday's clash with Betis in Wroclaw. Chelsea's head coach claimed it is unfair for the Spanish club to be playing on Friday night when they end their La Liga campaign by hosting Valencia.

Betis have nothing to play for in the league and will have more time to rest before the final, whereas Chelsea will have little time to recover from their daunting trip to the City Ground on the final day of the Premier League season. The Stamford Bridge club must beat Forest to guarantee their place in the top five but Maresca is also looking to claim silverware in his first year in charge.
''I am not happy, 100%,' the Italian said. 'You cannot allow a team 48 hours more time when they are playing a European final. 'I don't know if it's [down to] the Premier League, La Liga or Uefa but it is not normal to play a team who has had 48 hours more time than you.
Maresca was asked if Uefa should have intervened and made Betis play on Sunday. 'It is not correct,' he said. 'I don't know who it is but there should be rules, absolutely yes.'
Nicolas Jackson is missing through suspension against Forest, leaving Chelsea without their main striker. Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu have returned to training but Maresca said that neither forward is at full fitness yet. He added that Chelsea's reserve goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen, who has played throughout the Conference League, will not step aside for Robert Sánchez against Betis.
'Filip is going to play in the final,' he said. 'He's played all competition, it would be unfair to take him out now. It will be Filip plus 10 players, I'm not sure who else will play. He deserves to play in the final.'

Manchester United 2 Everton 2 – Mbeumo's debut, defensive errors and Berrada talks transfers

Manchester United fans were treated to a glimpse of summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha on the pitch alongside each other for the first time as Ruben Amorim's side played out a frantic — and briefly farcical — draw with Everton in Atlanta, Georgia. Mbeumo, who completed a potential £71m move from Brentford last month, looked bright as he played the first 45 minutes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, forming part of a new-look United attack that didn't include Rasmus Hojlund, who started on the bench while the subplot of United weighing up a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko bubbles in the background. Advertisement United were twice pegged back by Everton, with Bruno Fernandes' penalty cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye in the first half. After the break, Mason Mount's fine strike made it 2-1 before Amad's attempted clearance skewed into the United net off Ayden Heaven, all while Fernandes and Ndiaye scuffled off the the ball after the former had lunged at the Everton man from behind. A draw was also more than enough for United to win the Premier League Summer Series, even if skipper Fernandes opted not to hoist the trophy aloft in celebration. Laurie Whitwell breaks down the main talking points from the final game of United's U.S. tour. Mbeumo's first start for United, with Rasmus Hojlund dropped to the bench, meant questions ahead of kick-off as to who would start up top. The warm-up gave clues but even then, Amorim's system was a little tricky to detect, with the team going through their customary front-five-versus-back-five drill. At times, Mbeumo moved into the middle. In other moments, Cunha was the focal point. When the match started, it was Cunha who took up the striker position, although he did in a different manner to Hojlund, with much rotation from the three attackers. Cunha occasionally dropped to allow Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes, the two No 10s, to run beyond. In other passages, Fernandes ran from left to right, with Mbeumo going the opposite direction. All three were, at some stage, the most advanced in Amorim's team. It made for an entertaining attacking display by United, with Mbeumo at the heart of things. It was his turn and pass inside to Fernandes that started a move inside five minutes that saw United's captain unleash Amad down the right. Amad in turn slipped in Cunha, whose shot was off target. Those players combined again when Kobbie Mainoo found Cunha in midfield with a great pass between two Everton players, and the Brazilian fed Amad out wide. Fernandes tearing away on overlap gave space for Amad to find Cunha on the edge of the box, although his shot was blocked by James Tarkowski. Quick passing was again the key for the move that led to United's opener. Mbeumo took a ball by Fernandes first time and clipped it round the corner to Amad, who was once more sprinting forward from wing-back. It is the way Amorim wants the position to be played. Amad went over when tugged by Tarkowski to win a penalty, converted cooly by Fernandes. Advertisement Mbeumo's determination to score goals was seen consistently last season as he hit 20 in the Premier League for Brentford, and he showed it here when he followed up Jordan Pickford's parry to a Fernandes shot, winning the ball but seeing both his efforts blocked. Mbeumo nearly capped his promising 45-minute display with a goal, drawing a save from Pickford with a free kick, but he still looked a little short of peak physical condition after starting pre-season later than the rest of his team-mates, and he was replaced by Patrick Dorgu at half-time. Hojlund's place on the bench felt like the first step of Amorim showing him what his future would look like if he stays. For all that United looked the better, more threatening team, Everton created chances and it was not a total surprise when they equalised. Their goal five minutes before the break was well created and taken, with a crisp cross from Idrissa Gueye and a precise finish from Iliman Ndiaye, but it also owed to United being sloppy defensively. Vitali Mykolenko dispossessed Manuel Ugarte as he tried to dribble out from his own third with the ball, and Gueye struck a fantastic cross first time. Ndiaye timed his run perfectly to volley in the finish, with Fernandes' appeals for offside in vain. Amorim, giving his view during a half-time broadcaster interview, felt his team had lost concentration in enabling Ndiaye to be onside. 'When Ugarte has the ball, you see the difference — walking towards the box,' Amorim said. 'We need to sprint when Ugarte loses the ball; we need to be at least on the edge of the box. These small details we have to improve.' Later, Ugarte again lost possession when on the ball near United's box and Luke Shaw was able to block Ndiaye's shot. United had earlier been saved by the assistant referee's flag when Beto rounded Altay Bayindir to put the ball in. Bayindir did not appear confident, allowing Beto to seize the ball first, and earlier, he had parried James Garner's free kick to the feet of Jake O'Brien, who hit the post. United's brittleness was exposed late in the second half when Everton equalised for a second time in comical fashion. A shoving match between Ndiaye, Fernandes, Mason Mount and O'Brien ensued after Fernandes took a swipe at Ndiaye. Yet Everton kept attacking and scored when, as he tackled Dwight McNeil, Amad hit the ball against Ayden Heaven to screw into bottom corner. Mount had earlier come off the bench to put United ahead with a quality goal, turning and curling the ball into the corner in one swift movement. Chief executive Omar Berrada said United's recruitment team are 'working around the clock' to progress talks on targets to improve the squad. Discussions continue to be held on RB Leipzig striker Sesko, with director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves back in England. Director of football Jason Wilcox has been in the United States with the squad. Advertisement Berrada gave a pitchside interview to MUTV in which he predicted a good campaign ahead, and explained how his time has been balanced between commercial and sporting elements on the tour, and transfers across the Atlantic. 'We have to do a lot of multitasking,' he said. 'We have a team back home, led by Jason; a recruitment team who are working around the clock to ensure we continue to find opportunities to strengthen our squad. 'There has been lots of late calls and early-morning meetings to make sure we stay on top of it.' Berrada hinted he wanted to add more signings after Mbeumo, Cunha and Diego Leon. He said: 'The mood has been very good; the culture, the standards, the values. We're trying to make sure we create a team spirit that allows the players to compete at the highest level. 'We have very high standards, Ruben has been very clear about that. With Jason, it's something we want to see with the players, the staff, everyone, because what we want to do is win; start winning titles as soon as possible. 'Of course, adding players helps. We've seen the arrival of Bryan, Matheus, Diego; they've adapted really well. All the signs are positive. We're cautiously optimistic and we hope we're going to have a great season.' Asked how the club instils such standards, he said: 'It's about being very disciplined. We have to make sure everybody abides by them, everybody believes in them, and nobody falls out of line, to create that sense of togetherness around a single idea.' Berrada added: 'I feel very confident and I think we are going to see a much better season than we saw last year. I see it in the players, I see it in Ruben. That makes me feel quite optimistic about what we have ahead.' Saturday, August 9: Fiorentina (Home), pre-season friendly, 12.45pm UK, 7.45am ET

Son announced his decision to leave Tottenham after 10 years in an emotional press conference on Saturday. Son had his farewell with the club on Sunday with his teammates, Newcastle players and almost 65,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. The pre-season friendly in South Korea between the Premier League teams ended 1-1, with the high point being Son's second-half exit in likely his last game for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was surrounded by both sets of players before eventually sitting on the bench in tears. ADVERTISEMENT Son scored 173 goals in 454 games for the London club but was unable to find the target in what Frank said is likely to be his last appearance. His trademark "camera" goal celebration was, however, borrowed by Brennan Johnson who put Tottenham ahead after four minutes with a low shot from the edge of the area. Sky Sports Provide Update on Liverpool's Pursuit of Alexander Isak

Liverpool Remain Firm in Pursuit of Isak as Negotiations Edge Forward Liverpool Continue Push for Alexander Isak Liverpool are not walking away. Despite having an opening bid of £110 million turned down by Newcastle United, the Merseyside club remain keen on securing the services of Alexander Isak. The Sweden international, one of the standout forwards in the Premier League last season, has returned to training in England, as reported by David Ornstein, an update that only fuels further speculation. This is not a saga Liverpool intend to lose. While Newcastle have projected the image of a club unwilling to sell, those within the corridors of Anfield sense an opportunity. Isak's quality is not in question. He blends power, precision and composure with a striker's instinct that is increasingly hard to find at the highest level. For Arne Slot, a manager now tasked with defending a league title, the forward would represent both a statement and a solution. Newcastle's Position Strong but Not Unmoveable Newcastle are understandably wary of optics. Selling one of their best players to a direct rival, particularly so early in their own project under Eddie Howe, risks backlash unless the fee is undeniably substantial. Hence the reported asking price of £150 million. Photo IMAGO It is a towering figure, but one that may be more negotiation tactic than outright expectation. As Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany reports, Liverpool are not walking away from the table, and it seems only a matter of time before a second bid is launched. There is belief within the recruitment setup, led by Richard Hughes, that a deal could be struck for closer to £130–140 million. That may prove enough to satisfy Newcastle's need to be seen resisting firmly while ultimately doing business on their own terms. Timing Points Towards Progress Some observers have noted that Isak's return to training may signal a reconciliation with Newcastle. Others are not so sure. Context is key. Newcastle have already made moves for a replacement, showing firm interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. That interest suggests planning, not panic. A new number nine would not arrive as backup, it would come as a strategic replacement. Photo: IMAGO With that in mind, Isak's reappearance at the training ground could be less about commitment and more about practicality. As Liverpool continue to monitor the situation, it becomes harder to argue that this story is going away. Slot's Plans Could Hinge on One More Signing Isak would not be arriving to fill a gap but to elevate Liverpool's attacking line. With uncertainty around Darwin Núñez's role, and questions about long-term depth up front, the Swedish forward would offer Slot variety and reliability in equal measure. A fluid front three, with Isak flanked by Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz or Cody Gakpo, is one that could carry weight across all competitions. With pre-season already underway, Liverpool will want clarity sooner rather than later. For now, the club remain composed, confident in their approach and unwilling to panic. But with each day that passes, the feeling grows that this pursuit has substance, and may not end until Isak is wearing red.
