Movies to see this week: 'The Birdcage,' 'Carnival of Souls,' 'Friday the 13th' originally appeared on Bring Me The News.
Pride Month has proven to be a fruitful impetus for theaters to put some excellent movies back on screens.
There are familiar classics like The Birdcage and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but also some that deserve to have their merits sung more frequently, including Happy Together and Inappropriate Behavior.
Here's more on those and many other movies that you can see around the Twin Cities this week.
June 11–12, 14–15, and 18 at Alamo Drafthouse and June 12–15 at AMC Inver Grove and AMC Southdale
Dogma is a beloved but (until now) hard-to-see movie in the catalog of Kevin Smith.
It had been caught in limbo through a winding series of events that involved producer Harvey Weinstein, who eventually sold off the rights. While the film had a DVD release at one point, it hasn't been in theaters or on streaming, so it's been a big return for the movie that stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as a pair of fallen angels who've found a loophole that could get them back into heaven.
Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) is tasked by a surly angel (Alan Rickman) to stop their inglorious return. She's given a pair of "prophets" in the form of Jay and Silent Bob (Smith and Jason Mewes), and a litany of cameos that includes Chris Rock, George Carlin, Alanis Morissette, Janeane Garofalo, Salma Hayek, and Jason Lee. Various theaters
Thursday, June 12, at Grandview Theatres
Director Wong Kar-Wai's Palme d'Or-nominated drama follows two men (Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai) on a trip to Argentina, where they're isolated from their home in Hong Kong. Their love is tested as they begin to drift apart. Traumatic experiences elicit empathy but not a rekindling of passion as they navigate the shifting sands of their relationship. It's a beautifully shot exploration of the mysteries of love, well-trod territory — both love and beautiful cinematography — for Wong. 1830 Grand Ave., St. Paul ($14.44)
Thursday, June 12, at St. Michael Cinema and Friday, June 13 at Alamo Drafthouse and AMC Inver Grove
Friday the 13th on Friday the 13th? That's an easy yes. Three Twin Cities theaters will play the movie that started the world of Jason this week. (Though, one chose to play it the night before Friday the 13th for whatever reason.)
It may have lost some of its original spark simply for being so imitated, but it remains a classic slasher movie, even if, at this point, everyone knows who the killer is. Various theaters
Sunday, June 15, at Emagine Willow Creek
Taking place simultaneously in the present, where Shirin (played by writer and director Desiree Akhavan) is reeling from a breakup with her girlfriend, and in snippets from their relationship, particularly moments when she hides her bisexuality from her Persian parents, Appropriate Behavior is a darkly comic dive into how identities are built, maintained, and spurned.
Shirin can't seem to settle herself into any single identity — or at least not into the identities that others seem to want for her. She struggles to be the perfect daughter, a politically correct partner to her activist girlfriend, or even to find what her own sexuality means to herself. Akhavan has a knack for finding the awkward moments that not only offer cringe-inducing laughs, but where characters unintentionally reveal themselves. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($11.60)
The Birdcage (1996)
Sunday, June 15, at Alamo Drafthouse and Tuesday, June 17 at The Parkway Theater
Pride Month series at the Alamo and The Parkway have dropped this classic Nathan Lane and Robin Williams comedy into the lineup this month. (Though, The Parkway's screening has the added bonus of pre-movie burlesque.)
Lane and Williams are absolutely fantastic as a team, and it's a shame they didn't get a run like Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon or William Powell and Myrna Loy. They star as the cabaret owner and drag queen who have to put up a straight-laced front when their son (Dan Futterman) gets engaged to the daughter of a Senator and co-founder of the Committee for Moral Order (Gene Hackman). It's a lot of chaotic humor that is also played with heartening compassion. Various theaters
Tuesday, June 17, at Alamo Drafthouse
After her car is forced off a bridge and she miraculously survives, Mary (Candace Hilligoss) leaves town to become a church organist. However, she begins seeing a man no one else can see and feels an irresistible pull toward an abandoned carnival. As her reality unravels, the tension builds slowly with incredibly beautiful cinematography that has influenced generations of filmmakers. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($11.91)More movies playing in the Twin Cities this week:

Horoscope for Saturday, Aug. 2nd, 2025

Saturdays are often great for fun and socializing. However, today may be better spent doing something low-key with a tight-knight group of family or friends rather than going big on entertainment. This is because the need for closeness and emotional safety will be strong. The current cosmic weather might also leave us feeling a bit moody. There's tension in the air, but it can be best diffused by moving our bodies, cleaning up junk, or watching a sporting event or a powerfully gripping movie. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) If chores and clutter have been piling up, it's a good day to tackle both and get them out of the way. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The day bodes well for romance whether you're single or in a committed relationship. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Working on your wellness goals can help you feel good on the inside and out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Engaging with art and creativity can put you in a good mood. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You might feel more like a homebody rather than a partygoer today. This is OK; you could use some time to veg out and practice self-care. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) There could be something fun, new or interesting to check out in your neighborhood or town. If you seek it out, chances are, you'll find it. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You may not know what you want right now, but you soon will. For now, just let yourself be in the moment. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) You may need to take the lead on planning a group outing or activity. Just make sure to give yourself and others a little wiggle room. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Schedule a few hours of alone time for yourself so that you can handle some of the important business you've been putting off. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) You're encouraged to find community through learning, whether it's something like a fitness class, a museum crawl, or a language course. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Know that you're equipped to handle whatever curveballs today tosses at you. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Spend time with someone who enjoys introducing you to new people, things or places. It will be an enriching experience for both of you. FOR TODAY'S BIRTHDAY 'Go hard or go home' is your motto. You've got a gigantic heart that's full of love. You're fearless and free-spirited. You're also smart. You enjoy doing anything that allows you to learn something new, especially if you can have fun with it as well. When you're not spreading joy and positivity around with your sense of humour and optimism, you're probably leading the charge for a noble cause. This year, you may be moved to withdraw yourself from anything that isn't emotionally nourishing. Consider it self-care. BIRTHDATE OF: Skylar Diggins , professional basketball player; Kevin Smith, filmmaker; Charli XCX , singer-songwriter.

Whoa There Are a Lot of Restaurants Opening in Seattle Right Now

covers Seattle and Portland for Eater. A Seattle native, he's been a journalist for 15 years. Here's a list of notable openings we've clocked in the Seattle area in the last month. If we missed something, please email us: seattle@ GREEN LAKE — Highly anticipated Southern takeout spot Zax Eat 'N Three is no longer anticipated — it's here. It's serving meatloaf, chicken with horseradish sauce, and icebox cakes. CAPITOL HILL — Pitch the Baby, the second-ever women's sports bar in Seattle, is now open. Sister restaurant Condesa, which used to be a popular takeout window before it closed years ago, will reopen soon, but in the meantime you can get Mexican snacks and small plates alongside drinks. QUEEN ANNE — Six months after neighborhood institution Queen Anne Cafe closed, buzzy Capitol Hill Pizzeria Cornelly has opened its second location in the space. Expect lines at peak hours for this no-reservations place. QUEEN ANNE — For a different flavor of pizza in Queen Anne there's Swing. That's a new 'za and sandwiches joint that's notable for its $3.50 slices, which now counts as a bargain in Seattle? SEWARD PARK — There's a new pizzeria within a olive's throw of the water at Seward Park Pizza Co., a casual spot that also serves wings and sandwiches. WEST SEATTLE — Yet more pizza news, though this is a little more on the fancier end: Matt Gorman, formerly of Fremont standout Lupo, now has a takeout window only open on Friday evenings called Pizza Ritual. REDMOND — The fifth Washington location of upscale ice cream chain Salt and Straw opened in Redmond on July 5. MERCER ISLAND — The newest cafe from Macrina Bakery, whose breads and pastries are sold everywhere, just opened near Mercerdale Park. BALLARD — More expansion news: Brown liquor and meat purveyor Radiator Whiskey has opened its second location on Ballard Avenue. BALLARD — Just down the street from Radiator is another meat-focused restaurant, Little Beast, an upscale English-style pub and eatery from Beast and Cleaver owner Kevin Smith. (We're already celebrating its meat pies.) So if you're in Ballard, should you eat at Little Beast or Radiator? That's a real carnivore's dilemma. SOUTH PARK — El Rey Peruvian Restaurant, one of the few restaurants in the Seattle area serving that style of cuisine, is now open in South Park. (There's another restaurant with the same name in Lynwood, but the two appear to be unaffiliated.) WALLINGFORD — The already crowded Japanese food scene in this neighborhood is now even more crowded thanks to Sushi Taiyo. It doesn't have a website but the Seattle Times reports that it's been 'packed.' WALLINGFORD — And there's another new Japanese restaurant in Wallingford, Daruma Sando, which specializes in pork and chicken katsu. CHINATOWN–INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT — And speaking of Vietnamese cuisine, La Ka Saigon, a spot serving street food and milk tea, is now open on Jackson Street. CAPITOL HILL — A lively bar with street, Gol Mok Korean Market Bar has opened on Pike Street in the heart of Capitol Hill. It's owned by the same folks behind nearby Meat Korean BBQ. REDMOND — Japanese restaurant Momoji has opened a second location on the Eastside, in a mixed-used building next to the Downtown Redmond light rail station. As with the Capitol Hill location, it serves a standard selection of Japanese standards like sushi, sashimi, and yakisoba. PIONEER SQUARE — Day Made, a small cafe on the edge of Pioneer Square, is now open and serving the usual coffee drinks (and matcha), alongside primo baked goods from Ben's Bread. ALKI — Taking over the old Locust Cider space is the accurately, if unimaginatively named Seaside Grille, which serves mainly burgers and sandwiches. CAPITOL HILL — Colibri Mexican Kitchen has opened in the former Plum Bistro space, reports Capitol Hill Seattle Blog, with 'large portions and full plates.' Looks like a lot of steak on the menu too. UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — In a move that absolutely makes sense vibes-winse, juice-and-sandwich joint Joe and the Juice is open inside the swanky outdoor shopping complex.
