Over 12,000 traffic offenses recorded in Iraq in one day

Iraqi News2 days ago
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Ministry of Interior revealed on Sunday that 12,150 traffic violations were recorded in one day, indicating wide disdain for laws.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Ministry of Interior's spokesperson, Miqdad Miri, mentioned in a statement that the huge number of violations took place merely on Saturday.
The results highlight the ministry's intentional attempt to enforce traffic regulations more strictly throughout the country.
The ministry's efforts are part of a continuing push to improve road safety in Iraq, according to Miri.
Miri issued an urgent warning to drivers, emphasizing the ministry's steadfast commitment to decreasing reckless driving while holding offenders responsible.
The ministry's primary goal is to protect residents, and drivers must follow traffic laws or face numerous penalties, according to Miri.
The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, recently installed a thorough traffic monitoring system in an attempt to improve road safety and enforce traffic laws.
This system uses radars and traffic signal cameras that are placed strategically across the city to record incidents of drivers failing to use seatbelts, speeding, and running red lights.
This program is a major step in encouraging safe driving practices and lowering the number of traffic-related accidents in Baghdad's metropolitan area.
A report on road accidents in 2021 revealed that car drivers and pedestrians in Iraq represent the highest percentage of fatal injuries, followed by motorcyclists.
The report indicated that most road accidents in Iraq are caused by high-speed driving and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Baghdad court sentences former traffic directorate employee to life for embezzlement of 10 billion dinars

Baghdad ( – Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity (CoI) announced today, Tuesday (July 22, 2025), that two in-person lifetime imprisonment sentences have been issued against a former employee of the General Traffic Directorate for embezzling over 10 billion Iraqi Dinars. The CoI stated that the Rusafa Criminal Court issued the two verdicts in the case of the former General Traffic Directorate employee, whom the commission had investigated following his arrest. The court sentenced him to lifelong imprisonment and ordered him to pay the embezzled sum of 10,446,442,000 Iraqi Dinars. The CoI added that the court issued these verdicts based on Article (315/Part Two) of the Penal Code, granting the aggrieved party the right to claim compensation before civil courts once the verdict becomes final. The Commission noted that on March 5, it had announced a specialized operation that resulted in the seizure of 3,390,000,000 Iraqi Dinars from the embezzled funds of the General Traffic Directorate. These funds were hidden by four relatives of the convict in travel bags, along with 5 kilograms of gold jewelry, found in an abandoned house in a Baghdad neighborhood. The CoI affirmed that it continues to investigate the case, including other embezzled amounts, as well as real estate and vehicles suspected of being acquired through the embezzlement of General Traffic Directorate funds.

Sulaimani-based Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) and the Directorate General of Intelligence and Security (DGIS), which is affiliated with the federal defence ministry, carried out the joint operation, according to separate statements from both forces. "Arrest warrants had been issued against them according to the provisions of Article (4) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Legal procedures were taken against them, and they were referred to the competent investigative authorities," the DGIS said. The identities and nationalities of the suspects were not revealed, and it remains unclear which group they are affiliated with. Sulaimani-based security forces and Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS) said late last month that they killed three "terrorists,' including a senior commander, during a joint operation in Kirkuk province. Federal and Kurdish security forces, especially those based in Sulaimani, often carry out joint operations against terrorists. They have recently increased joint efforts to close security gaps between their territories, which have been exploited by extremist groups, including Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

Baghdad provincial council votes to retire governor, he calls decision illegal

Baghdad ( – The Baghdad Provincial Council voted during its latest session on Sunday (July 20, 2025) to stop the powers of Baghdad Governor, Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi, and refer him to retirement. This decision is part of a series of resolutions adopted by the council and officially documented with the signatures of its members, according to a source within the council. The source also indicated that during the same session, the council discussed the issue of audio leaks with a 'spyware nature' and voted to hold all those involved or negligent accountable. In response, Baghdad Governor Abdul Muttalib Al-Alawi issued a clarification regarding the decision to refer him to retirement and the audio leaks. Al-Alawi stated that the Baghdad Provincial Council's decision to retire him was made during an extraordinary session, noting that this matter was not on the agenda nor was it voted on for inclusion. He emphasized that the council's internal regulations do not permit discussing any topics outside the agenda during extraordinary sessions, rendering the decision against him lacking formal and legal legitimacy. Al-Alawi highlighted that since assuming responsibility for Baghdad Governorate, he has faced repeated attempts to remove him through retirement, totaling ten attempts so far, all under the pretext of reaching the legal age. He clarified that he was elected Governor of Baghdad by a unanimous vote of the current 52 members of the Provincial Council in a session held in January 2024, at which point he was already retired. He also asserted that the law does not specify an upper age limit for those appointed to the position of governor. He affirmed his commitment to legal and professional responsibility and public service, stating he would resort to legal mechanisms outlined in Law No. 21 of 2008 concerning governorates not organized into regions and its amendments, by challenging the decision before the competent judicial authorities. Regarding the recent audio leaks, Al-Alawi confirmed that as the capital's governor, he operates according to professional legal and administrative principles and has never used any illegal methods under any circumstances. He clarified he has no connection to those leaks, whether they are true or false, and has directed the formation of an official investigative committee according to administrative and legal procedures to follow up on the matter.
