Fury as girl, 12, put in school isolation for Union Flag dress on culture day

Courtney Wright was left 'embarrassed' after she was pulled out her class at Bilton School in Rugby for wearing the 'Spice Girls' dress - the school apologised for the 'distress'
A schoolgirl was thrown into isolation just for wearing a Union Flag dress to celebrate being British at her school's culture day.
'Straight A' student Courtney Wright, 12, was left feeling devastated after she wore a Spice Girls -esque dress and wrote a piece about history and traditions as part of the celebrations last Friday. She was told the dress was "unacceptable" and she was hauled out of lessons and forced to sit in reception until her dad collected her.

Stuart Field, 47, said he was stunned to learn that his daughter had been segregated from her friends due to her choice of attire at Bilton School in Rugby, Warwickshire. The marine restoration worker said: "Courtney was so embarrassed and couldn't understand what she'd done wrong.

"She should not be made to feel embarrassed about being British. And she shouldn't be punished for celebrating being British - nobody else I've spoken to can quite get their heads around it.
"Somebody at the school has politicised a Union Jack dress even though that was clearly not Courtney's intent. Courtney didn't do anything to be political.

"It's about being British, the Spice Girls and even the freedom at being able to wear a dress. This is just what being British means to her."
In a permission letter sent to parents, it said the day was "designed to promote inclusion, understanding, and appreciation of different backgrounds, traditions and heritages". But Stuart said the school's actions went against the message and other pupils with St George's flags and Welsh flags were also turned away from the school gates.

He added: "It's the school who have made it political and it went against everything the event was being held for. She chose the dress and wrote the piece off her own back.
"They day was to celebrate everyone's cultures and Courtney chose this Union Flag dress so she could celebrate hers. She also wrote this speech to go with it and was very proud of what she'd done.
"The next thing I get a call at work at around 9am to say she's not allowed in school dressed like that and that it was unacceptable. I wasn't able to get away from work until about midday. They made her sit in reception all morning in front of the receptionists and kept her in isolation.

"She's a straight A student, one of the brightest in her year and she's never been in trouble before so she was really upset. All the kids there are British in my eyes, I like to think I'm a tolerant person but this was just not right.
"I wanted an answer as to why they thought this was acceptable - and nobody could give me a straight answer, I wanted to know how they had justified it. I spoke to her head of year, and he said he wasn't the best person to talk to about it, so I can only assume he didn't really agree with it either.
"It obviously came from above him but I don't know for sure who made the decision. I was fobbed off and told that I'd get a phone call and I took Courtney straight out for a nice meal to cheer her up.

"If anything I was extremely proud of what she chosen and what she had written in her speech. She wanted to celebrate being British, she couldn't understand what was wrong with that.
"She wasn't the only kid picked out either - one child from a farming background was turned away at the gates for wearing traditional flat-cap and checked shirt. Another with a St Georges flag and another with a Welsh flag were not allowed in either. It was ridiculous.
"It just seemed anything that was remotely British wasn't allowed. Others were allowed in burkas, niqabs or traditional Nigerian clothing.

"They didn't even read or listen to her speech which actually celebrates inclusivity and other cultures. It was just like British culture could not be celebrated.
"The school backtracked and eventually apologised, I think once the school governors became involved. But the damage had already been done, Courtney should not be have been made to feel that way.
"I put a post on Facebook and I've had messages of support from all over the world really, from Poland to Australia. Everybody is saying how ridiculous it is that any young person cannot celebrate where they are from."

The school contacted Stuart over the weekend and have since apologised for the move. A spokesman for Stowe Valley Trust said: "At Bilton School, we are proud of the diversity of our students and the rich heritage they bring to our community. We are committed to fostering an environment where every pupil feels respected, valued, and included.
"On Friday 11th July, an incident occurred during our Culture Celebration Day that caused considerable upset to one of our pupils, her family, and members of the wider community. We deeply regret the distress this has caused and offer our sincere and unreserved apologies.
"We have since spoken directly with the pupil and her family to listen to their concerns and reflect on how this could have been handled better. We are committed to learning from this experience and ensuring that every student feels recognised and supported when expressing pride in their heritage.

"As a school, we are reviewing our policies and strengthening staff training to ensure our practices reflect our values of inclusion, respect, and understanding for all.'
Courtney's speech for cultural day
"Today I want to talk about my culture — British culture — and why it's important to me. In Britain, we have lots of traditions including drinking tea, our love for talking about the weather and we have the royal family.
"We have amazing history, like kings and queens, castles, and writers like Shakespeare. It's also modern, diverse and always changing - with music fashion and food from all around the world blending into daily life. And let's not forget fish and chips!
"It's also the way we speak, our humour, our values of fairness and politeness, and the mix of old traditions and new ideas But sometimes at school, we only hear about other cultures — which is great because learning about different countries is interesting and important.
"But it can feel like being British doesn't count as a culture, just because it's the majority. I think culture should be for everyone — not just for people from other countries or backgrounds.
"Being British is still a culture, and it matters too. It's part of who I am. So let's celebrate all cultures — whether they come from far away or right here at home."

The Three Lions ace, 27, and childhood sweetheart Lucia, 26, were together during a photoshoot before he was unveiled as the Catalan giants' latest signing at the Camp Nou stadium. Rashford was later seen emerging from the kiosk in a post on FC Barcelona's social media, captioned: 'Hello? Barca? For sure, I'm coming.' The striker has signed a year-long deal with Barcelona, who have an option to buy him next summer for around £26million. Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim has made it clear he will not play for United while he is in charge. Rashford has been given the No14 shirt previously worn by big names including Johan Cruyff, Thierry Henry and Ronald Koeman. The Sun understands that Rashford has asked calming influence Lucia, who works in PR, to help him settle in to life in Spain so he can focus on his football. But they were not seen together until they were unwittingly snapped preparing for his phone box stunt. A source said the pair have stayed close, despite their 2022 engagement fizzling out, and have grown close again of late. They added: 'Marcus knows that some of the best moments in his career have occurred when Lucia has been at his side. 'They got together when they were very young and have had ups and downs, but a friendship has always remained. Barcelona announce loan signing of Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford 'He knows that she is good for him and she is one of the few people in the world he knows has got his best interests at heart. 'It feels like I'm at home and it's a big factor in my choice to come here. It's a family club and people are comfortable here.' Rashford, who flew out yesterday with his new teammates for his new club's Far East pre-season tour, and Lucia have been friends for at least a decade. They met at Ashton on Mersey School in Manchester where both were pupils. He was sent there as a teenage United academy player. He scored twice in the 5-1 victory at Old Trafford. They split in 2021 after Covid put a strain on their relationship but reconciled the following year. In February 2022, they were seen at the world premiere of Amazon Prime documentary 'Rooney' at HOME cinema in Manchester. Three months later, he proposed to Lucia after a romantic meal at celebrity restaurant Catch LA in West Hollywood, California. He got down on one knee and handed her a £250,000 engagement ring, posting a picture on Instagram of them kissing. Behind them was a large heart made from white flowers. Beneath the picture was the date and a love heart emoji. Lucia, who graduated with first class honours in Advertising and Brand Management, was a regular in the stands at Old Trafford. But in June 2023, sources said Rashford and the former Manchester Metropolitan University student had split after he was seen with a model outside a hotel in Miami. 7 Sources said Rashford and Lucia had split in June 2023 Credit: Getty She was later identified as personal trainer Courtney Caldwell. In November 2023, Rashford and Lucia were seen having dinner at a restaurant in Manchester. He was briefly linked to model and former Love Island contestant Grace Jackson last year, but the relationship ended in December. Back in Spain, meanwhile, Rashford is expected to be on 15 per cent less than the £315,000-a-week he was paid at Man United. He spent the second half of last season at Aston Villa after Amorim made it plain he would not be part of his plans for United's future. Barcelona almost signed Rashford in January, a move the star said he wanted to go through. After the deal was finally signed on Wednesday, club president Joan Laporta said: 'We are very happy because a player of great quality is coming, at a great age. 'We have him as strong as a rock. He came in very motivated.'

'I'm part of British royal family after Queen's secret marriage and love child'

Queen Victoria had a secret lovechild with her manservant, a new documentary claims. Here a woman, who believes she's a descendent of the royal, speaks out Queen Victoria and John Brown were not only secretly married, they had a love child, a new documentary will claim. Historian Dr Fern Riddell believes she has found proof that the monarch and her manservant were deeply in love – and that the Queen gave birth to her tenth child, a girl called Mary-Anne, whose father was John. ‌ "I believe Victoria and John were madly in love. I believe I've found evidence that they got married, and I really do believe there's a strong possibility they may have had a child together," she says. ‌ TV lawyer Rob Rinder, who appears in the documentary to cast his sceptical eye over her findings, says: "Big claims. If you're right, that changes our understanding of history." ‌ In her new book, Victoria's Secret, Riddell reveals that she has located a direct descendent of Mary-Anne _ Angela Webb, who lives in Minnesota, USA. John Brown was her grandfather's great uncle and she grew up knowing all the stories about her family coming from an illegitimate branch of British royalty – but never thinking it could be proved. She shows off a basket of heirlooms in the Channel 4 programme and explains: "They were originally Queen Victoria and John Brown's and have made their way to me. There are books, there's jewellery, there's documents. ‌ "This brooch was commissioned by Queen Victoria. It says March 29, 1896. It does have a lock of hair in the back as well. "This is a handwritten note from Victoria. It has the royal seal. It says to place a wreath and flowers in dear John Brown's room on his bed on the 27th, which would have been the anniversary of his passing." ‌ Angela says the story she grew up with is that John Brown was far more than a close companion of Queen Victoria's. She says: "We were told there was a romantic relationship, that there was a long boat journey and there was a baby, Mary-Anne, that was Queen Victoria's and John Brown's – and my family has descended from that baby." Dr Fern says that the secret Brown family archive that she has unearthed proves beyond all doubt that the pair were lovers – and had a baby girl who was given to John's brother Hugh to bring up with his wife Jessie. The couple, who were childless, then moved to New Zealand with the baby, and it helped to avoid a scandal. But later it's said that Queen Victoria begged them to return to Scotland with the child – and they did. In the film, Dr Fern says that the end of Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert had been an unhappy time. Victoria had struggled through her nine pregnancies and suffered from post-natal depression, plus symptoms including hallucinations that may have been mistaken for the madness that had afflicted King George. ‌ She says doctors had warned against any further pregnancies, meaning the couple would have had to practice celibacy. "So in her late 30s, she is told to no longer have a sexual connection with her husband. It's going to cause a real issue in their marriage for her." Dr Fern believes the Queen always had a strong sex drive. "She was sensual, she adored physical pleasure." One example of this is a young Victoria writing that she had been riding in the rain with Albert, who was wearing "tight white cashmere pantaloons" and noting that he had on "nothing under them", which she had also underlined. ‌ Fern says that she can understand why Victoria would have been drawn to John Brown at this time, because he was young and handsome and dashing. She explains: "When you look at this, you can see why Queen Victoria is irresistibly drawn to him." When her marriage to Albert becomes strained, the couple spent more time in Scotland at Balmoral, where John would have spent much time with Victoria. "This allows a space for a wounded Queen to indulge in a flirtation with a strong, sexy young man," Dr Fern says. There are many examples of love letters, unearthed from the Brown family archive, including one that the monarch wrote to John's brother Hugh in 1886, to let him know how she felt about his brother. It says: "I took and held his dear kind hand. I told him no one loved him more than I did. And he answered, nor you than me, no one loves you more." ‌ In one Christmas card she tells her lover: "My lips may give a message better of Christmas love than even my letter." And in case that wasn't clear enough, another says: "I have loved thee with an everlasting love." Rinder agrees this could only mean they had a "deep, meaningful and enduring" love affair. But the affair was hushed up, and so too was the pregnancy, Dr Fern believes, which happened when the Queen was in mourning over Prince Albert and out of public life. ‌ She finds evidence to suggest that Victoria and John were secretly married and declares: "I think there was a surprise baby, spirited away to New Zealand. Then, once Victoria and John had committed to one another, they decided to bring Hugh and Jessie and Mary-Anne home." Angela was "flabbergasted" when Dr Fern contacted her to ask questions about her ancestry. She believes she can "see myself" in pictures of Queen Victoria and is now keen to do a DNA test. She says: "I'd love to be able to prove that they had a really beautiful love story. I'd love to be able to say this was a legitimate part of John Brown's life - that he was her second greatest love." But the American admits: "If it's proven that I am a descendent of Queen Victoria, I'm not sure how I'll feel."

James Whale shares he 'probably won't be here next week' as he enters hospice

James Whale has said that he has entered hospice care, as he recorded what he said would be his final podcast with his wife. The radio and TV host, 74, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, revealing in 2020 that his kidney cancer had returned and spread to his brain, spine and lungs. Whale is best known for hosting The James Whale Radio Show, as well as for his work for talkSPORT and talkRADIO over the years. The Celebrity Big Brother star has been hosting the podcast Tales Of The Whales with his wife Nadine and has now said Friday's (July 25) episode would be his last, with his voice was barely a whisper during the recording. He said: 'I'm in a hospice. I probably won't be here next week. I'm fine. I've got so many drugs in me, I can't feel a thing.' He then went on to say: 'A lot of people get really upset when someone is going to die. I'm the person who's going to die and I'm quite relaxed about it.' His wife Nadine also said that he had 'perked up' since arriving at the hospice and had changed his medications so he was 'more lucid'. She admitted she has been finding it harder to come to terms with his diagnosis, but praised how 'brilliantly' he has been coping with it. The couple said they had been crying a lot, reading messages and voice notes from listeners who praised Whale's contribution to their lives. When it came time to say goodbye to their listenership for the last time, he said to his wife: 'We've had the best time together haven't we. I love you.' More Trending He added: 'Thank you for being a listener. I hope it helps in some way. Who knows what is next so I can only say au revoir.' Earlier this year, Whale announced he had stopped receiving treatment and recently marked what he called his 'last birthday', surrounded by close friends and family. He has been a fixture of British broadcasting for over 50 years, receiving an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting and charity. He also founded the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer in 2006 – now Kidney Cancer UK – the country's leading charity focused on the disease. Got a story?
