Indian police find Russian mom living in a cave with her 2 young daughters
The discovery came last week, inspectors said, as they were patrolling a landslide-prone forest in the southern Indian town of Gokarna, when one of the group members spotted a statue of a Hindu deity peeking out through some dense foliage.
As they got closer to inspect, police Insp. Sridhar S.R. noticed bright coloured saris strung along the length of a rope. As he pulled back the fabric, a woman and two young girls were spotted inside a cave.

Russian national Nina Kutina, 40, and her two daughters, ages four and six, had been living in the cave for about a week, officials said. Kutina had previously used the cave as a retreat to practice yoga and meditation, and told the inspectors they were happily making it a home now.

According to ABC News, she told investigating officers she was 'interested in staying in the forest and worshipping God.'
In an interview with South Asian news agency ANI, Kutina explained her reasoning for living in the forest with her girls.

'We have big experience to stay in nature, in jungle. We were not dying. I did not bring my daughters to die in jungle,' Kutina told ANI.
Kutina recounted making art and using clay with her daughters, and cooking 'tasty food.'
'They did not feel bad. They were very happy,' she said.

Eventually, the trio were taken to a shelter for women run by a non-profit group, the New York Times reported. They have since been moved to a detention facility specifically for foreigners who are in India illegally. Police said they are taking steps to repatriate Kutina to Russia for overstaying her visa, but added that her children do not have Russian passports.
Police inspectors said records showed Kutina arrived in India in 2016 on a business visa that expired in April 2017. She left the country for Nepal in September 2018, but returned to India.
Kutina was 'reluctant to provide proper details regarding her and her children's passport and visa,' police Supt. M. Narayana said.
She did not reveal whether her children were born in India or Russia, but she told authorities she had a son who died in Goa, Narayana told CNN.
'She does not want to leave as she loves the nature, but we have to follow procedure,' Narayana said. He said the fact that she managed to be in India undetected since 2017 was a security concern.
'Going (into) caves is a dangerous thing, and with two children, and to live there for a week or more is astonishing.'

A police statement said Kutina sent a message to her friends after she was found.
'Our peaceful life in the cave has ended — our cave home destroyed,' she wrote in the message, according to the statement.

Vietnam tour boat survivor describes his escape
HA LONG BAY, Vietnam (AP) — A Vietnamese man who survived the capsizing of a tour boat in Ha Long Bay described his escape from the overturned vessel. At least 38 people were killed in the accident and a search is continuing for five who are still missing, according to Vietnamese state media. The Wonder Sea embarked early Saturday afternoon for a three hour excursion in the popular bay, carrying 48 passengers and five crew. But a storm quickly covered the sky, bringing high winds and pouring rain, survivor Dang Anh Tuan told The Associated Press. Tuan said the passengers asked for the boat to turn back to shore, but the crew reassured them they were almost at their destination and kept the boat moving forward. 'It rained for about 15 minutes, and then the boat started to shake vigorously, tables and chairs were jostled around and seconds later the boat overturned,' the 36-year-old fire extinguisher salesman said. 'Water gushed in and I lost all orientation.' 'I tried to breathe. But more water came in. I took a deep breath, got rid of my life vest and dove down. I saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out, escaping the boat, and then I climbed on the overturned boat to look for help,' he said. Tuan and three others survived by clinging on to the capsized boat and its propellers, waited out another two hours until the rain stopped and rescued arrived. Rescue workers saved 11 people, but one died in hospital due to injuries, VNExpress newspaper said. The boat turned upside down because of strong winds, the newspaper said. A 14-year-old boy was rescued after four hours trapped in the overturned hull. The newspaper said that most of the passengers were tourists from Hanoi, including about 20 children. Tuan was a holiday with 11 university friends, only three of whom survived. Tuan has only minor cuts, but one of his friends suffered multiple injuries in his head and the other's tendons were cut by broken glass as he escaped the boat through a window. The other nine members of the group were killed, including one who was traveling with his wife and 3-year-old son. The wife and child were also drowned. A tropical storm is also moving toward the area. Last: Riesling – the white for all seasons and all foods (almost)
Article content When I started my career in the wine biz, over 30 years ago now, riesling was the one grape that had eluded me. It was like bebop jazz, I knew it existed, but that didn't mean I had to like it. I eventually came to love both, sometimes together, and now I regard riesling as the Miles Davis of the wine world. The problem, initially, was that, like many, all I had tasted were the cloyingly sweet, mass-produced examples, such as the one with a depressed nun on the label. Cheer up, sister, a little less sugar and a bit more acidity will fix things. The light went on when I was in an Indian restaurant in London and noticed the wine list had an extensive riesling section. They were pouring a good Kabinett by the glass, and my server suggested it would go nicely with the spicy chicken dish I had ordered. It did, of course, and it was one of those aha moments that left me wanting more. Article content Article content Years later, on my first media trip to Germany, I noticed the locals were mostly drinking dry (trocken) rieslings, and many had at least a decade of age behind them (the wines; the patrons were considerably older). The searing acidity found in the younger wines had melded into a basket of peaches and Meyer lemons, and the wet-stone minerality and vibrant acidity seemed to tie it all together. I couldn't help but notice that even the top wines from the very best producers rarely exceeded $75, and that still holds true, whereas the fancy white Burgundies I had come to appreciate were eroding what little disposable income I had. I had found my white grape; affordable, age-worthy, and the perfect foil to exotically flavoured foods. Article content Article content Article content If there's a defining word that appears in riesling descriptors, and numerous other wines, it's minerality, but what does minerality taste like? Many years ago, I was visiting Ernie Loosen, of Dr. Loosen wines, one of the most famous riesling producers in Germany's Mosel region. It was raining lightly as we strolled through his vineyards, and we were discussing that very flavour profile. He told me to pick a piece of the blue slate that proliferates many vineyards in the Mosel and give it a lick. In the back of my mind, I wondered how many journalists he had convinced to do this, if for no other reason than sheer entertainment value. But there it was, the stony, flinty combination of rain, soil, and a hint of salinity. It's almost more of a sensation than a flavour, but when combined with the classic stone fruits, citrus, and piercing acidity inherent to German riesling, you have wine that sates the palate on multiple levels. Article content Article content Riesling is a grape that requires cooler climes to allow its trademark acidity to shine through. As such, places like Germany and Austria are ideal, and here, in Canada, the Okanagan Valley and the Niagara Peninsula can produce some excellent examples. In the Okanagan, Tantalus's Old Vine Riesling is a stellar example, winning scads of awards, and, from Ontario, Cave Spring Vineyard is another solid choice. Their ice wine is always a contender for Canada's best. Article content Article content Article content In Germany, the epicentre for benchmark riesling, the key regions include the Mosel, Rheinghau, Rheinhessen, Nahe, and the Pfalz. At one time, the Rheinhessen took a back seat to the others, but now producers like Keller (considered by many to be Germany's best, and arriving in Alberta soon), Wittmann, St. Antony, and Wagner-Stempel have pushed the region to the forefront. The Rheinhessen is also their largest wine region, both in terms of area and volume, although we tend to see more wines from the Mosel in terms of selection in Canada.

Main rotor blade struck overhead cable while emergency landing, says AAIB's preliminary report on Uttarkashi helicopter crash
New Delhi [India], July 19 (ANI): The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Saturday released the preliminary report into the May 8 Uttarkashi helicopter crash which claimed the lives of six people including the pilot. The report said that the helicopter crash near Gangnani in Uttarkashi was caused during emergency landing by the main rotor blade striking an overhead fibre optic cable. The report said that 20 minutes after takeoff, the helicopter began to descend from its assigned altitude. One passenger survived but sustained serious injuries. The crash occurred around 08:35 am during a chartered Char Dham Yatra flight. The Bell 407 helicopter, registered as VT-OXF and operated by Aerotrans Services Pvt. Ltd., had departed from Kharsali Helipad to Jhala Helipad with six passengers. This was a single-pilot operation and followed an earlier routine hill familiarisation flight completed earlier that day. 'The purpose of the flight was Charter flying for Char Dham Yatra. This was a single pilot operation flight, and this sector was planned to be operated by another pilot. The assigned flight level for this entire sector was 10,500ft AMSL... The helicopter airborne again at 08:11 IST from Kharsali helipad,' the report said. Investigators noted that the helicopter began descending from its assigned cruising altitude and attempted an emergency landing on the Uttarkashi-Gangotri Road (NH 34), near Gangnani. During the descent, the main rotor blade struck an overhead cable that ran parallel to the road. The impact also damaged nearby metal barricades before the helicopter tumbled down a steep slope. It eventually came to rest against a tree roughly 250 feet into a gorge. 'The helicopter flew for 20 minutes before descending from its assigned altitude... Eventually, it came to rest against a tree, approximately 250 feet deep into a gorge,' the report said. The accident claimed the lives of the pilot and five passengers, leaving one passenger with serious injuries. 'The pilot and five passengers were fatally injured in the accident, while one passenger sustained serious injuries. The helicopter was destroyed in the crash. However, there was no fire,' the preliminary report said. The report said the aircraft was airworthy at the time of the flight. Records show a tail rotor defect had been fixed two days prior to the crash and is not believed to have contributed to the incident. All required inspections were current as of April 25, 2025. 'The BELL 407 helicopter was manufactured in 2008... The last scheduled inspections were carried out on April 25, 2025,' the report noted. The technical logbook showed the last pilot-reported defect was tail rotor skin peeling on May 3, 2025, which was corrected by May 7. 'The last defect reported by the pilot was 'surface skin peeled at the tail rotor tip'... the Certificate to Release to service was issued on 07th May 2025,' the report said. The wreckage has been transported to a secure facility for further examination. Experts from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), and Rolls-Royce are aiding in the investigation. 'The investigation team visited the accident site and carried out onsite investigation... The identified helicopter and engine components were brought to the AAIB Headquarters by the investigation team,' the report said. Additional coordination with international authorities and technical advisors is ongoing as investigators continue to gather and analyse evidence to determine the root causes. (ANI)
