MLB All-Star Game has slight drop in viewers despite having its first swing-off

Boston Globe15 hours ago
Major League Baseball and the players' association made the change in 2022 amid concerns about running out of pitchers because hardly anyone throws more than an inning in the game anymore. The game was decided by having three batters from each league take three swings each off coaches in what was baseball's equivalent of soccer's penalty-kicks shootout.

Baseball continues to have the best ratings for an event featuring All-Stars. The NHL did not have an All-Star Game this year, while the NBA's averaged 4.7 million on TNT. The NFL's Pro Bowl games, a series of skills competitions and flag football, also averaged 4.7 million on ABC.

Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov requests trade after misunderstandings with coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Blue Jackets right wing Yegor Chinakhov, the No. 21 pick in the 2020 NHL draft, has requested a trade. Shumi Babaev, Chinakhov's agent, posted a statement from his client about his intentions on X on Thursday. 'I had some misunderstandings with the coach during the season. Now I would be glad to have a trade," Chinakhov said in the post. "I would like to move to a different location. Will I return to Russia? As long as I can play in the NHL, I will keep developing here.' Dean Evason was in his first season as Blue Jackets coach this past season. Columbus went 40-33-9 and finished two points out a wild-card spot. Babaev later posted that he has talked to the Blue Jackets front office about granting Chinakhov's request. Babaev added: 'I understand that Yegor's desire to be traded did not come out of nowhere.' The Russian forward has been plagued by injuries in his four NHL seasons, including missing 40 games last season due to back injury. He had seven goals and 15 points in 30 games. He has one season remaining on his contract. Chinakhov's best season was 2023-24, when he had 16 goals and 29 points in 53 games. ___ AP NHL: The Associated Press

4 wide receivers Chargers could acquire after Mike Williams' retirement

The Chargers had to address the wide receiver position this offseason, and part of that solution was in the form of veteran Mike Williams. The veteran spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Chargers before an eventful 2024 season with the Jets and Steelers. Well, on Thursday, the eight-year wideout announced a surprising retirement from the NFL. He was expected to be a part of this year's 53-man roster, so the Chargers suddenly have a hole in the wide receiver room. While he may not have had a significant impact on the field, Williams would have certainly provided some veteran leadership in the locker room. Let's examine four potential additions that Los Angeles could sign to replace Williams. Keenan Allen As a former teammate of Williams, you knew Allen's name would appear on this list. Despite a relatively productive 2024 campaign with the Bears, Allen remains unsigned late into the summer. He spent the first 11 years of his career with the Chargers and accumulated 10,530 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns along the way. Perhaps most importantly, he has a known rapport with Justin Herbert already. The two connected for most of the 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns that Allen produced just two years ago in 2023. Furthermore, Allen would help replace the leadership hole that has been left by Williams. Amari Cooper Cooper showed serious signs of decline in 2024 after his prior campaign in which he had 1,250 receiving yards en route to his fifth career Pro Bowl selection. At this point in the summer, Cooper is still worth the flyer to fill out the wide receiver room. Gabe Davis While this may be the lowest-upside option, it would also be the cheapest. Davis' tenure in Jacksonville didn't go as planned, as his 2024 campaign was cut short after 10 games due to a torn ACL. The 2020 fourth-rounder has been connected to the Steelers in recent months, but it appears he may not be fully healthy quite yet. If/when he is recovered from that knee injury though, he has a deep-play presence that could help fill the void of a guy like Joshua Palmer, who signed with the Bills this offseason. Tyler Boyd After eight seasons in Cincinnati, Boyd spent just one year with the Titans. It was the worst full season of his career, as he finished with just 39 catches and 390 yards without a touchdown. Boyd started just eight games for the AFC South side, the lowest number since 2020. While he would come cheap like Davis, it's worth wondering if he has much left in the tank. Additionally, Boyd has typically operated better out of the slot. Ladd McConkey will be the one who occupies most of the time in the slot for the Chargers. Of the four options, this seems to make the least sense.
