Rishabh Pant must save risky shots for IPL, Test cricket needs discipline: Engineer

India Today20-07-2025
Former wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has advised Rishabh Pant to save his risky shots for the IPL (Indian Premier League) and bat in a disciplined manner in Tests. Pant has been in marvellous form in the ongoing Test series against England, being the second-highest run scorer of the series so far.The southpaw has left England bowlers frustrated with his audacious strokeplay as he's not been afraid to charge down the track against the seamers. Pant's bravado has left everyone on the edge of their seats as he's redefined batting in the longest format.advertisementHowever, Farokh Engineer feels that the India star should be showing a lot more discipline at the crease and save his big shots for the IPL.
'Absolutely. Save those (risky shots) for IPL. Test cricket demands discipline. From a number three or four, you expect them to play proper cricket, get big scores, and build innings. Rishabh has scored centuries in both innings of a Test, which is remarkable. So yes, he could play purely as a batsman, especially with England's strong bowling lineup, now including Jofra Archer and Atkinson,' Engineer told RevSportz.Furthermore, Engineer said that Pant can also play as a pure batter in the fourth Test in Manchester and needs to be more responsible in crucial moments.'For the runs he's scored, yes, he can play as a pure batter. But Rishabh is unpredictable. Whatever comes to his mind, he does it. I joked with him about his shot selection, and he just laughed—said he does what feels right in the moment. He has the confidence and has gotten away with it often. But he needs to be more responsible in crucial moments, like right before lunch or at the end of a day's play. Still, he's immensely talented. He invents his own shots, and thankfully, helmets allow that now. In our time, we wouldn't have had any teeth left,' he added.Pant injured his finger while wicketkeeping on Day 1 of the third Test and didn't don the gloves for the rest of the match, with Dhruv Jurel filling in his place behind the stumps as a substitute wicketkeeper. Hence, Pant's participation in the fourth Test remains in doubt.India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has hinted at playing Pant as a pure batter, given his prolific form and the importance of the fourth Test. Trailing by 1-2 in the five-match series, India might be tempted to play Pant at any cost with the series on the line.- EndsMust Watch

‘Can't wait to be back doing what I love': Rishabh Pant posts after he gets ruled out of 5th IND vs ENG Test

India wicket-keeper batter posted a message on his social media handles after he was ruled out of the fifth and final Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series with a fractured foot, thanking the fans for their constant support. 'Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way. It's been a real source of strength. I will begin rehab once my fracture heals and I am slowly settling into the process. Staying patient, following routines and giving it my 100 per cent. Playing for the country has always been the proudest moment of my life. Can't wait to be back doing what I love,' he said on X. Pant, who had injured his foot in the opening day of the 4th Test in Manchester also thanked his team for backing him in a video posted by BCCI on Monday. 🙌#RP17 — Rishabh Pant (@RishabhPant17) July 28, 2025 'Just a gesture from my side. Whatever it takes to make our team win or put the team forward instead of thinking about the personal goal, that was all for me. Definitely, it's been amazing the way they backed me. The team is under pressure. Everything is there, but when the whole country stand behind you for the same cause, that is something, that emotion is difficult to explain, how proud I feel to represent my country,' said Pant in the video. 'The only message I'm going to give my team is, let's win it, guys. Let's do it for the country,' he added. On Sunday after the 4th Test match betwen England and India ended in a draw, the BCCI had confirmed that Pant would not be taking any further part in the series. The BCCI Medical Team will continue to monitor his progress and the team wishes him a speedy recovery. The Men's Selection Committee has named Narayan Jagadeesan as replacement for Rishabh Pant for the fifth Test, which begins on July 31, 2025 at Kennington Oval, London,' a statement from the board read. Pant fractured his toe while attempting a reverse sweep on Day 1, which led to him having to retire hurt. He then remarkably continued his innings while batting almost on one foot and scored 54 in 75 balls. Pant was advised six weeks of rest and was expected to not travel to the ground on Day 2. However, he was eventually spotted in the dressing room in full gear and he then hobbled out after Shardul Thakur was dismissed shortly before Lunch. On Day 5, the keeper wasn't required to bat due to Jadeja and Sundar's gritty knocks which ended the 4th Test in a stalemate.
