PM Anwar invites Aeroflot, others to resume direct Malaysia flights

The Sun14-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has invited Russian airlines, including Aeroflot, to resume direct flights to Malaysia as soon as possible.
'We have taken a position of centrality in Malaysia, as well as ASEAN, to decide for ourselves what is best for Malaysia and its people,' he said during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, today.
Aeroflot is the largest Russian airline group, which includes the Rossiya and Pobeda airlines.
The Aeroflot Group is the undisputed leader of Russian commercial aviation. In 2024, Aeroflot carried 30.1 million passengers; 55.3 million if other Aeroflot Group airlines are included.
Aeroflot is constantly expanding its domestic route network, including flights between the country's regions, developing socially oriented transportation programmes and implementing its flat fares on flights to cities in the country's Far East and Kaliningrad.

Russian attack kills 3 in Ukraine's city of Dnipro, governor says

REUTERS/Mykola Synelnykov KYIV (Reuters) -Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles in an overnight attack that killed three people in Ukraine's Dnipro and the nearby region on Saturday, Ukrainian officials said. Moscow's troops launched 235 drones and 27 missiles, damaging residential and commercial buildings and causing fires, the Ukrainian Air Force said. It said in a statement that 10 missiles and 25 attack drones hit nine sites. The rest of the drones and missiles were brought down, the Air Force said. "A terrible night. A massive combined attack on the region," Serhiy Lysak, the Dnipropetrovsk regional governor, said on the Telegram app. He said three people were killed in the attacks and six others wounded in the city of Dnipro and the nearby region. Lysak posted pictures showing firefighters battling fires, a residential building with smashed windows, and charred cars. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy vowed retaliatory strikes. "Russian military enterprises, Russian logistics, and Russian airports should feel that Russia's own war is now hitting them back with real consequences," Zelenskiy said on the Telegram app. Ukraine's attacks on Russia have heated up in recent months, with Moscow and Kyiv exchanging swarms of drones and fierce fighting raging along more than 1,000 kilometres of the frontline. Two Foreign Investment Projects Underway After Spate Of Trade Missions

Two foreign investment projects announced during the government's trade and investment missions abroad have now begun, refuting claims Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visits abroad are fruitless. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Gul Technologies, a company announced during the trade and investment mission to China last year, is currently building its factory in Kulim, Kedah, with an investment of RM350 million for Phase 1. He said the project is set to create 350 jobs for locals. 'What is interesting is that this company is collaborating with Kulim Advanced Technologies Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Kulim Hi-Tech Park Corporation Sdn Bhd, which is responsible for training young talents. 'Through this collaboration, the company will employ 100 local technicians who will be sent to China for training,' said Tengku Zafrul in a post on X today. Meanwhile, another company, EDA, which was announced during the trade and investment mission to Italy last year, has started an investment worth RM100 million in Jasin, Melaka. 'EDA also has 150 vendors among local companies. This means EDA is not only creating jobs at their facilities, but also supporting Malaysian workers in 150 local companies,' he said. These two projects are among the 2,198 manufacturing projects that have been approved throughout the Madani Government's administration from 2023 to the first quarter of this year. The minister said that of that total, 1,849 projects, or 84.2 per cent, have been implemented as of July. Related

Tian Chua gives ‘Turun Anwar' rally a miss

Tian Chua said he will not attend today's rally but respects the people's right to assemble. PETALING JAYA : Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua will not be attending the anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally at Dataran Merdeka, despite his name being included in the programme. According to the programme shared by an opposition leader, the former Batu MP was scheduled to arrive at 3.15pm. Tian Chua told FMT the organisers invited him to attend the rally on Thursday or Friday. 'But I told them I couldn't attend because I won't be in town. Maybe, by that time, they may have already printed the programme,' he said. He also said he told the organisers he respected their right to assemble. Tian Chua, a staunch supporter of Anwar Ibrahim after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998, was sacked from the party in 2023. The decision came after he contested the Batu parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 15th general election. According to the programme for the rally, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin will be present at the event, aimed at calling for Anwar's resignation as the prime minister.
