NEW DELHI: Former Australian captain
Michael Clarke
and ex-England cricketer Nick Knight have called for spinner
Kuldeep Yadav
's inclusion in India's bowling attack after the pacers underwhelmed in the first Test at Headingley.
Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, who stood out, the rest of the Indian bowlers struggled on a placid surface that offered little help.
The pace unit looked ineffective, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a below-par performance and Prasidh Krishna failing to find the right length. Shardul Thakur couldn't make his usual impact, while
Ravindra Jadeja
managed to extract some turn but lacked adequate support from the other end.

"Bowling-wise, I do not want to be hard on any individual, but I think they've got to play Kuldeep Yadav.
I think it is an absolute no-brainer. I think he's a wicket-taker and would have offered a lot more than what he saw the attack do in this Test," Clarke said on the Beyond23 Podcast.
Clarke also criticised India's selection mindset.
"India have done this for a while. They care so much about extra batting or stacking the batting deep, and they are willing to risk picking the number one spinner to do that. I think to win in England, you've got to look to pick 20 wickets," Clarke said.

Why Team India will practice behind closed doors in Birmingham, details of bonding session and more
Knight echoed similar sentiments, especially considering the dry English summer.
"I would be looking for every opportunity to play Kuldeep Yadav. England will find it hard against Kuldeep. If Kuldeep is on top of his game, that could be a defining moment in the series, or moments, because England likes to be aggressive. When you want to be aggressive, you have to be certain about which way the ball is turning. If there is a little bit of assistance from the pitch, Kuldeep will be able to bowl all his varieties," he said.
The second Test between India and England is scheduled to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2.

After bowlers script Eng collapse, Jaiswal keeps India afloat

London, Aug 1 (UNI) Fortunes swing wildly as India rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal's audacious fifty to roar back on a volatile day two of the fifth Test at The Oval by bowling England out for 247 in their first innings and responding with an assertive 75/2 at stumps. England, resuming post-lunch at a commanding 109/1, imploded spectacularly to 215/7 by Tea, undone by a relentless Indian bowling unit. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna spearheaded the counterattack with sustained hostility and timely strikes. Zak Crawley's fluent 64 off 57 balls (14x4) ended with a mistimed heave off Prasidh, caught by Jadeja at mid-wicket — the moment that cracked England's momentum. Siraj, then claimed Ollie Pope leg before after a successful DRS challenge, and removed Joe Root soon after in a mirror dismissal — a sharp inswinger pinned him in front and India had their man. Jacob Bethell was then undone by a searing yorker, falling LBW to Siraj. Prasidh Krishna removed Jamie Smith with a rising delivery to second slip, and followed it up by trapping Jamie Overton LBW with a sharp in-dipper, a review confirming the wicket after England burned one earlier in the same over. Harry Brook alone resisted with flair and fight. He struck Siraj for a stunning sweep-scoop six — reminiscent of Rishabh Pant — then raised his 50 in style with a pair through long-off. He reached 53 off 64 balls (5x4, 1x6), but fell in Siraj's final over — an inside edge crashing into the stumps. Chris Woakes, nursing an injury, did not come out to bat, and England were bowled out for 247 in 51.2 overs. Siraj (4/86) and Prasidh (4/62) led India's charge, ably supported by Akash Deep and Jadeja's pressure. India's response was full of intent. Despite the early loss of KL Rahul for 7 — caught by Root off Tongue after multiple teasing away-seamers — Jaiswal launched into England's bowlers with authority. He tore into Atkinson and Tongue with crisp drives, ramps, and cuts. His 50 came off 44 balls, capped with a ramp six over the keeper off Overton. England dropped him twice — Liam Dawson at long leg and Brook in slips — adding to their frustration. Sai Sudharsan was edgy, surviving a dropped chance before falling LBW to Atkinson for 11. His review was in vain, and the dismissal sparked an exchange with Duckett, requiring intervention from Brook and Pope. Akash Deep, sent in as nightwatchman, got off the mark with a boundary and remained unbeaten on 4 at stumps alongside Jaiswal (51*), who had taken India into the lead with a flurry of boundaries, including three in one over from Atkinson. India closed the day at 75/2 in 18 overs, leading England by 52 runs, and Jaiswal looking ominous. With Jaiswal in fine touch and the pitch easing out, Day 3 promises high-stakes drama in this finely poised series decider. Score Summary: England 1st Innings: 247 all out in 51.2 overs (Brook 53, Siraj 4/86, Prasidh 4/62); India 1st Innings: 75/2 in 18 overs (Jaiswal 51*, Atkinson 1/26, Tongue 1/25). UNI BDN SSP

Deion Sanders kept his cancer battle quiet - Brett Favre calls him a true fighter after finding out: "He's a grinder"

Deion Sanders' cancer battle leaves Brett Favre shocked (Getty Images and X/Brett Favre) In a year that has tested the resolve of legendary NFL figure Deion Sanders, the Hall of Famer has emerged victorious in a deeply personal battle. Known as 'Coach Prime,' Sanders recently underwent surgery to remove his bladder after being diagnosed with cancer. While the news stunned fans and peers alike, it was Brett Favre's heartfelt response that highlighted just how much Sanders' journey has resonated within the NFL community. Brett Favre was 'caught off guard' but never doubted Deion Sanders' willpower When TMZ Sports reached out to NFL icon Brett Favre, the former quarterback didn't hold back his emotions. 'Thank God they found it, and it was a successful surgery. But I was completely caught off guard with the news, but I'm thankful that the prognosis looks good,' Favre said. Despite his surprise, he wasn't at all shocked by Sanders' unyielding spirit in facing adversity. 'He played every play in practice as if it were the Super Bowl-winning play,' he recalled. The two shared a locker room briefly with the Atlanta Falcons back in 1991, yet their bond clearly transcended time. "I'm not surprised [he isn't taking time off]. He's a grinder. When I was with Atlanta my first year, Deion had already solidified his place in NFL lore already. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of Gutter Replacement For 2500 Sq Ft House LeafFilter Gutter Protection Get Rates Undo But one thing about Deion, he was never a tackler, and he would admit that. But he worked his butt off… He played every play in practice as if it were the Super Bowl-winning play. So I'm not surprised he's digging his heels in and is going to keep coaching," Favre said.. He even offered heartfelt encouragement, saying, '"Not that he needs my advice, but just keep doing what you're doing. And as long as you enjoy it, whatever that may be, in his case it's coaching… keep doing it," Favre said. "You're impacting so many people and so many people are pulling for you, just keep it rolling." Favre, who is battling Parkinson's himself, understands the emotional weight of health struggles. His admiration for Sanders was evident, not only as a former teammate but as someone who sees Sanders as a resilient symbol of inspiration. Coach Prime remains undeterred and focused on the 2025 season Following his successful surgery, Sanders made it clear he has no plans to step away from the sidelines. Currently leading the Colorado Buffaloes, the 2024 season marked a turning point as the team went 9-4 and landed an Alamo Bowl appearance. With sights now set on the 2025 opener against Georgia Tech on August 29, Coach Prime affirmed his commitment: 'I was always going to coach. It was never in my spirit, in my heart, that God wouldn't allow me to coach again. ' He also addressed the speculation about his retirement with a touch of humor and confidence: 'I know you're probably thinking something's going to happen today that ain't gonna happen… I don't know where you get the news from.' Sanders also used his public platform to urge others, especially men, to prioritize their health. 'Men, everybody, get checked out… please get yourself checked,' he said. His cancer was only discovered during unrelated testing, reinforcing the need for routine care and early detection.
