Hammond teen charged in Gary woman's murder
Jack A. Marcardo, 19, is charged in the July 7 shooting death of Danielle Ellis, 30, of Gary.
A potential motive is not clear in charging documents. No witnesses appear to have seen the shooter and it is not on camera. Court filings do not yet show a lawyer.
He is in custody, held without bond.
Hammond Police estimated Ellis was shot around 1:30 a.m. They arrived at the 5400 block of Haywood Avenue, finding her shot in the upper torso and lying on a sidewalk.
She was taken to Community Hospital, before she was transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just after 5 a.m.
A man said he and his female relative went to Gary around 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. to pick Ellis up to hang out at their Hammond home. Somewhere during the evening, Ellis and the man got into an argument.
The man and Ellis went for a walk.
Along the way, he heard gunshots and Ellis fell down, an affidavit states.
Meanwhile, the man's relative said she wanted to leave at some point and told his little brother to come with her as she went driving to look for them. Someone was riding a bike on the 900 block of State Street. She heard a gunshot and saw the man trying to aid Ellis.
A witness told police they saw a blue Divvy bike abandoned nearby after the shots were fired. Police found two casings by the bike. Witnesses said they saw Jack – a friend of the man's little brother – on a bike in the area when the shooting happened. A witness said Jack was armed with an AR-style rifle that evening, charges state.
Police went to Marcardo's mother's home, who said her older son – not Jack – rode that bike. The elder son hadn't been home for two weeks, she said. She didn't mention Jack and refused to let officers inside her home.
A video showed a man running around the corner from where the shooting happened. The bike was found abandoned there.
Police executed a search warrant July 8, where they arrested Jack. He refused to talk with police.

Midtown Manhattan office shooter fired 47 rounds in deadly rampage: Police
The Midtown Manhattan office shooter fired 47 rounds from his M4-style rifle during the rampage, a number that indicates the suspect, Shane Tamura, reloaded his rifle at least once, the NYPD said. There were 23 shell casings and 13 bullet fragments recovered from the lobby of 345 Park Avenue, police said. Detectives also located 24 spent shell casings and 15 bullet fragments on the 33rd floor of the office building, police said. An additional 800 rounds and a .357 caliber handgun were recovered in Tamura's BMW, which was double-parked outside the building, the NYPD said. Four people, including off-duty New York City police officer Didarul Islam; Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner and security guard Aland Etienne, were killed in Monday's mass shooting. Montgomery man sent to federal prison on gun charges
A Montgomery man has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison on firearms charges. On July 31, Calvin Craig Griffin, 22, of Montgomery was sentenced to 81 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, said acting United States Attorney Kevin Davidson. Following his prison term, Griffin will serve three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. According to court records, on Aug. 28, 2024, officers with the Montgomery Police Department were conducting patrols in the area of Eastern Boulevard and Carmichael Road when they saw an person entering a hotel room carrying what appeared to be an AR-style pistol. Hotel management informed officers that they suspected illegal activity in that room and requested assistance in having the individuals removed from the property. Inside, they recovered an AR-style pistol with an extended magazine containing 63 rounds of ammunition. Because of prior felony convictions, Griffin is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition. Griffin pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on April 21. The case was investigated by the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance from the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, which includes the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, ATF, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and MPD.
