Everyone Wants Their Own Jane Austen Adaptation, and They're Getting Them
It's the year 2025 and we are blessed with not one, and dare we say not even two, but three new Jane Austen adaptations. Ms. Austen herself turns 250 years old this year, and it's not a moment too soon to celebrate the life and works of the iconic author.
Now, exactly two decades after Joe Wright's 'Pride & Prejudice' made cinematic history with the Darcy (Mathew Macfadyen) hand flex seen 'round the world, there are a number of modern adaptations in the works, not to mention other recent works inspired by her life and most beloved novels, from the film 'Jane Austen Wrecked My Life' to the series 'Miss Austen.'

And 'Pride & Prejudice' is hardly the only Austen book getting new life in two (!!) formats, as Austen seems to suddenly be everywhere, all over again. Ahead, we break down the upcoming adaptations, and provide some guidance on earlier entries you can enjoy right now.
Format: Limited TV series
Cast: Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden, and Olivia Colman

'Pride and Prejudice' (note: no ampersand) is in the works at Netflix as a limited series. 'The Crown' alum Emma Corrin returns to the streamer as an executive producer on the series; they will also star as lead Elizabeth Bennet. 'Slow Horses' actor (and Mr. Saoirse Ronan) Jack Lowden has been cast as Mr. Darcy. The iconic Olivia Colman, who also is already a Netflix staple with 'Heartstopper,' will be Mrs. Bennet.
The six-part series is billed as a 'faithful, classic adaptation' of the novel, with author Dolly Alderton ('Everything I Know About Love') writing the script. 'Heartstopper' helmer Euros Lyn will direct. 'Pride and Prejudice' will be going into production in the UK in 2025.
Previous versions to watch now: Joe Wright's 'Pride & Prejudice' (2005) is a must-see for any Austen-phile. The feature starred Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the lead roles, with Rosamund Pike, Judi Dench, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, and Carey Mulligan (in her film debut) co-starring.
And if you really want more 'P&P,' the Colin Firth-led 1995 BBC miniseries is worth all eight or so hours.

And the buzzy 'Pride and Prejudice' adaptations aren't just limited to the screen: Audible is launching an audiobook retelling of the literary classic with a star-studded cast. 'Babygirl' star Harris Dickinson, who just made his directorial debut with Cannes stunner 'Urchin,' will play Mr. Darcy, with Marisa Abela as Elizabeth Bennet. Bill Nighy, Jessie Buckley, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Glenn Close, Sophie Wilde, Will Poulter, and David Gyasi also lend their voices to the project.
'Pride and Prejudice' was adapted from Austen's novel by Lulu Raczka ('Women,' 'Beware the Devil'), with Dionne Edwards ('Pretty Red Dress,' 'A Thousand Blows') directing. The audio drama 'Pride and Prejudice' will be released worldwide in English on September 9.
Previous versions to watch now: While this is the first of its kind for the platform, we can recommend the UK-released Audible dramatized production the 'Northanger Abbey' which is narrated by Emma Thompson, who also happened to write and star in the beloved 1995 'Sense and Sensibility' film.

Focus Features is getting back in the Austen game: The studio just re-released its 2005 'Pride & Prejudice' in theaters, and also greenlit a 'Sense and Sensibility' adaptation with Daisy Edgar-Jones in the lead as Elinor Dashwood, the eldest of three sisters. 'Blue Jean' director Georgia Oakley will helm the feature from a script by bestselling author Diana Reid.
Focus and Working Title both collaborated on 'Pride & Prejudice' and Autumn de Wilde's 2020 version of 'Emma.' There is no word yet on when the film will start production, but the project was announced in June 2025.
Previous versions to watch now: The 1995 Ang Lee version is required viewing. Emma Thompson won the Academy Award for the screenplay for the film, and also led the feature as Elinor Dashwood. The character is secretly in love with Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), who is engaged to someone else. Plus, it's the 30th anniversary of this masterpiece.

Star Dakota Johnson made her period piece debut with the critically acclaimed adaptation of 'Persuasion,' which was theater director Carrie Cracknell's feature directorial debut. Johnson's Anne Elliot (Johnson) is famously a non-conforming woman with modern sensibilities. Yet all logic flees after Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) returns back into her life.
'Rain Man' Oscar winner Ron Bass co-wrote the 'Persuasion' script with Alice Victoria Winslow; 'Persuasion' was Austen's final completed novel before her 1817 death.

Anya Taylor-Joy transformed into beloved matchmaker (or meddler, based on who you ask) Emma Woodhouse for Autumn de Wilde's directorial debut. The Focus Features release is a who's who of rising stars, including Josh O'Connor, Mia Goth, and Callum Turner. Austen staple Bill Nighy and Gemma Whelan co-star.

Austen's actual final novel was 'Sanditon,' which she only wrote 11 chapters of before her death. However, Andrew Davies who also wrote the BBC limited series version of 'Pride & Prejudice' in 1995 expanded upon Austen's last written words to make this 2020 show. Rose Williams stars as Charlotte Heywood, a heroine who dreams of living in the big city instead of her family country home. She is later invited to the seaside Sanditon to stay with the Parker family, led by patriarch Tom (Kris Marshall) and his brooding brother Sidney (Theo James). Of course, a love triangle ensues. Actor James also executive produced this iteration of the would-be novel. However, the series only lasted for one season.

Glastonbury Festival clean-up begins as thousands of music fans head home
A major clean-up operation has begun at Glastonbury Festival to return the site from a pop-up city of 200,000 music fans to a Somerset dairy farm. The festival's clean-up team began picking up thousands of discarded items including paper cups and food containers as festival-goers began to make their way home, leaving the festival in a steady stream. Cleaners tackled over-flowing bins and big items such as camping chairs and blow-up mattresses, as well as slippers, flip-flops and shopping bags. Glastonbury will not return in 2026, as the festival enters a fallow year to give the ground time to recover before the next event takes place in 2027. Organiser Emily Eavis told the on-site newspaper, Glastonbury Free Press, she had a 'huge list of things' to improve the festival ahead of its next iteration. She said: 'We're always looking to make it better. The detail is critical. Even just a small touch – like putting a new hedge in – can make a real difference. 'And that's what fallow years are for: you lay the ground to rest and you come back stronger.' This year's edition of the festival saw punk duo Bob Vylan and Irish rap trio Kneecap have both of their sets on Saturday assessed by Avon and Somerset Police to decide whether any offences were committed. Bobby Vylan, of Bob Vylan, led crowds on the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of 'death, death to the IDF', before a member of Irish rap trio Kneecap suggested fans 'start a riot' outside his bandmate's upcoming court appearance, and led the crowd in chants of 'f*** Keir Starmer'. Sir Keir had said in the run-up to the festival that he thought Kneecap's set was not 'appropriate' at Glastonbury. On Friday, festival-goers were treated to surprise performances from alternative pop star Lorde, who played her new album Virgin in full, and Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi, who played two years after a set at the festival during which he struggled to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms. The 1975 took to the Pyramid Stage to headline that night, with a set which saw singer Matty Healy joke he was his generation's 'best songwriter', with the band playing songs such as Chocolate, Love Me and About You. Pulp were revealed to be the act billed as Patchwork, appearing on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday to a backdrop paying homage to their classic 1995 set. Their appearance came 30 years after their breakthrough headline performance at the festival when they stood in for The Stone Roses after the Manchester band's guitarist John Squire was injured in a cycling accident. Candida Doyle, the band's keyboard player, had previously appeared to confirm the band would not perform at the festival, despite being keen to play, telling BBC Radio 6 Music last week 'they (Glastonbury) weren't interested'. Also on Saturday, Haim made a surprise appearance on the Park Stage, opening with one of their best known songs in The Wire, before performing a mix of older songs such as Summer Girl and new singles including Relationships. The day saw veteran rocker Neil Young headline, performing some of his best known songs including Cinnamon Girl, Like A Hurricane and Rockin' In The Free World, performing at one point with Hank Williams' guitar. Brat star Charli XCX headlined the Other Stage on Saturday, performing tracks from last year's summer sensation such as 360, Von Dutch and Club Classics. Sir Rod Stewart took to the Pyramid Stage for the Sunday legends slot, bringing out former Faces bandmate Ronnie Wood for Stay With Me, Lulu for Hot Legs and Simply Red's Mick Hucknall for a performance of his band's If You Don't Know Me By Now. He was also joined by the festival's founder, Sir Michael Eavis, who was wheeled on to the stage by his daughter, organiser Emily Eavis. The Pyramid Stage was headlined by pop rocker Olivia Rodrigo on Sunday evening, who brought out The Cure frontman Robert Smith to perform his band's songs Just Like Heaven and Friday I'm In Love. As the 66-year-old indie-goth star arrived on stage on Sunday night, Rodrigo said: 'Glastonbury would you please welcome Robert Smith, give him a big welcome, come on.' At the end of Just Like Heaven, the pair hugged, before Rodrigo said 'give it up for Robert Smith you guys' before adding she was 'so honoured to play with him tonight'.

With that said, it can be a lot to scroll through, so allow me to offer my humble services in helping you find the new movies on streaming that you are not going to want to miss. The below list of movies are taken from the major streaming services: Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Hulu, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock and Prime Video. I'm also specifically picking movies that are new to streaming this month — in this case, these are 11 movies that are landing on one of the major streamers for the first time, or coming back to streaming services after only being available via on-demand. So without further ado, here are my picks for the 11 movies to stream in July. The Amateur slid a little under the radar in movie theaters, but the spy thriller starring Rami Malek did earn a "Fresh" score from critics and an 88% positive rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Those reactions point to this being a movie that likely deserves more of a look when it becomes easier to watch on streaming this month. In the movie, Malek plays a CIA analyst Charlie Heller, whose wife tragically dies in a terrorist attack. He wants to go after those responsible, but when his superiors deny that plan, Charlie goes out on his own using his analytical and technical skills at his disposal to get his revenge. Stream The Amateur on Hulu in the US starting July 17. Streaming plans for The Amateur in the UK are unconfirmed; movie is currently available via on-demand. Let's be honest, nobody likes taking tests. But what if a test decided whether or not you could have children. That's the premise of this sci-fi psychological drama that stars Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as hopeful parents and Alicia Vikander as person running the assessment and deciding if they get to become parents. The indie movie, which only saw a limited release in movie theaters, is officially "Certified Fresh." Stream The Assessment on Hulu in the US starting July 19; currently streaming on Prime Video in the UK. I had plans to see Billy Joel in concert this September before the Piano Man unfortunately announced that he would need time to recover from a medical condition and the concert was cancelled (bummer, but warranted). That just makes this upcoming HBO documentary about Joel more of a must watch for me (and any fan of his music). A two-parter that will release on Max in back-to-back weeks, Billy Joel: And So It Goes explores the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting, providing never-before-seen performances, home videos, personal photographs and one-on-one interviews. Stream Billy Joel: And So It Goes part 1 on July 18 on Max, with part 2 premiering July 25. There's no info on a UK premiere for Billy Joel: An So It Goes at this time. The language barrier on Netflix may be a thing of the past based on how many foreign language movies have become solid hits on Netflix so far this year. Whether they're watching dubbed versions or subtitles, Netflix subscribers have given movies like Exterritorial (from Germany) and Bad Influence (from Spain) their attention. We could have the next example of that this month in Brick, another German-made movie. Matthias Schweighöfer, the breakout star of Netflix's Army of the Dead, leads this sci-fi, mystery thriller where an entire apartment building becomes encased by a mysterious brick wall, forcing the residents to find a way out. Stream Brick on Netflix worldwide starting July 10. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is one of the funniest sports comedies of all time. The battle between Vince Vaughn and his team of misfits and the fantastically over-the-top villain played by Ben Stiller is, as the title suggest a classic underdog story, played out in hilarious fashion. With sports options a bit minimal at the moment, Dodgeball can help fill your competitive drive, while getting you howling. Stream Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story on Hulu in the US starting July 1; currently streaming on Disney Plus in the UK. Another classic sports movie highlights July's streaming options, with Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 teeing off on Netflix. The sequel to Sandler's golf comedy sees his hot-headed, long-driving character trying to reignite his golf career to help his daughter achieve her dreams. Original cast members Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen and Ben Stiller, are back, while new to the scene are Sunny Sandler, Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and a number of real-life golf professionals. Can they all help recreate what made the original Happy Gilmore a fan-favorite? Stream Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix worldwide starting July 25. In the new action comedy Heads of State, a pair of world leaders have a bit more of a hand in international affairs as John Cena and Idris Elba play the US president and UK prime minister that have to stop a global conspiracy on their own. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jack Quaid and Paddy Considine also star in the movie that hopes to bring some summer fun to Prime Video's streaming lineup. Stream Heads of State on Prime Video worldwide starting on July 2. Pick your preference on Mortal Kombat movies, as both the 1995 movie and the 2021 reboot return to Max in July. For, it's the 1995 movie all the way. In a nutshell, both movies involve some of Earth's strongest fighters being tasked with saving the planet from adversaries from an other world looking to the planet over, with its fate to be decided in a series of fights known as Mortal Kombat. The timing is good too, as a sequel to 2021's Mortal Kombat is set to be released later this year. So you can use this opportunity to refamiliarize with the new movie's characters. Stream Mortal Kombat (1995 and 2021) on Max in the US starting July 1. Both Mortal Kombat movies are available on-demand in the UK, with no streaming plans available at this time. It's been a long five-year wait for The Old Guard 2, the sequel to Netflix and Charlize Theron's hit action movie about immortal mercenaries. But that officially ends early in the month, with the added bonus of Theron and company taking on a new villain, played by Kill Bill icon Uma Thurman. This is one of Netflix's answers to the summer blockbuster season, and if it can live up to the first movie it should be a pretty good one. Stream The Old Guard 2 on Netflix worldwide on July 2. Max is adding a number of recent A24 movies to its library this month, including Opus and Death of a Unicorn. But the most intriguing will be On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, an international indie that has a rare 100% "Certified Fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie follows a Zambian family whose secrets come out as funeral proceedings for their uncle take place. Interested? Stream On Becoming a Guinea Fowl on Max in the US starting July 4. Streaming plans for On Becoming a Guinea Fowl in the UK are unconfirmed; movie is currently available via on-demand. What I dubbed as the first great movie of the year, Sinners arrives on streaming in July, meaning there is little excuse if you're one of the few people that has not seen this excellent entry from Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. A blend of horror, action and music, Sinners is expertly made, written and acted, and should play just as well on your TVs at home as it did on the big screen. Stream Sinners on Max in the US starting July 4. Streaming plans for Sinners in the UK are unconfirmed; movie is currently available via on-demand.

Ozzy Osbourne says 'Birmingham forever' as he reflects 'my dad went into debt for my microphone'
Ozzy Osbourne has reflected on his humble beginnings growing up in Aston as Black Sabbath were awarded their latest honour. The Prince of Darkness opened up on how the heavy metal band first began here in Birmingham - before the bandmates became pioneers of the genre. A young Ozzy had placed an advert in a music store in town, searching for help in finding a gig. Little did anyone know, it would be this small note that brought together one of the greatest bands in history. He spoke out with Birmingham city council as the founding members of Black Sabbath were awarded the Freedom of The City of Birmingham this weekend, Saturday, June 28. 'I first put an advert in a music store in town. If these guys hadn't come to my door, I wouldn't be sitting here now," he said, reflecting on the new accolade. "It seems to have flown by so quickly. It's amazing. I think about my dad, who went into debt to buy me a microphone. If only he could be here now. "I think he would be very proud. I'm a Brummie and I always will be a Brummie. Birmingham Forever!' Terence 'Geezer' Butler, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward now each have the title of an Honorary Freeman, along with Freedom of the City scrolls and medals. Terence 'Geezer' Butler added: 'This is a great working class city, and we're all working class, from Aston. "We weren't given a chance when we started out, but Birmingham has always been behind us. People used to make fun of our accents, but we're all proud Birmingham people and we love this city. It's one of the greatest cities ever, it's given the world so much and we're proud to be here.' The Freedom of the City honour is the one of the oldest traditional ceremonies in the country, which recognises people's exceptional service to the city. Birmingham city council says the honour recognises Black Sabbath's "significance to the cultural and musical identity of Birmingham", along with their strong association with the city and "continued influence as pioneers of heavy metal." Tony Iommi said: 'It's a great thing to receive. Birmingham is our home, and we love what Birmingham has done for us. We've got the bridge and the bench, things like that. We're very grateful.' As part of the ceremony at the City Council House, their names were engraved on the Freedom of the City marble board. Bill Ward added: 'It's completely overwhelming. I'm so proud to be an Astonian. That's where I got my attitude. It was a blessed – and cursed! – to meet Tony when I was 15, and I'm so proud that I got to know Geezer and Ozzy. They're my brothers. I love them very much and we love our city very much.' The engravings in the Council House building joins Black Sabbath bridge on Broad Street as a permanent tribute to the band and their accomplishments. Cllr Sharon Thompson, Deputy Leader of the city council said: 'From the streets of Aston to global success, the ceremony has been a fitting celebration of their achievements and connection to our city, showcasing the band's incredible career as pioneers of heavy metal and recognising their continued legacy as part of Birmingham's rich musical identity. "Black Sabbath are global ambassadors of our city, and their music continues to inspire musicians across the world, so it has been wonderful to recognise the band with this honour.' They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, awarded a Lifetime Ivor Novello Songwriting Award in 2015 and were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
