South Africa reopens inquiry into murders of 4 apartheid-era activists by police hit squad
No one has been brought to justice for the 1985 killings of the so-called Cradock Four, and their families have accused the post-apartheid government of intervening to block the case from going to trial.
Teachers Fort Calata, Matthew Goniwe and Sicelo Mhlauli and railway worker Sparrow Mkonto were abducted and killed while returning home from a political meeting in the southern town of Cradock.
'After 40 years, the families are still waiting for justice and closure,' Advocate Howard Varney, representing relatives of the four men, told the court in an opening statement.
'We intend to demonstrate that the deaths of the Cradock Four were brought about by way of a calculated and premeditated decision of the apartheid regime taken at the highest level of the government's state security system,' Varney told the court in the Eastern Cape city of Gqeberha.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up to uncover political crimes carried out under apartheid refused amnesty to six men for the Cradock Four killings.

Man, 92, convicted of rape and murder in the UK's longest-running cold case
A 92-year-old man on Monday was convicted of the rape and murder of a woman in southwestern England in what is thought to be the UK's longest-running cold case ever to be solved. A jury at Bristol crown court found Ryland Headley, then aged 34, guilty of attacking 75-year-old Louisa Dunne in June 1967. 'Louisa Dunne died in a horrifying attack carried out in the place where she should have felt safest – her own home,' prosecutor Charlotte Ream said. 'For 58 years, this appalling crime went unsolved and Ryland Headley, the man we now know is responsible, avoided justice.' Dunne was found dead in her home by a neighbour on June 28, 1967. The cause of her death was found to be strangulation and asphyxiation. She had also been raped. Investigators retained Dunne's clothing, including a blue skirt, and other samples from her body for further examination. They also recovered a palm print from a window which Headley is believed to have used to gain entry to her home. In 2023, the case was re-examined and the skirt was sent away for forensic testing in May last year. DNA recovered from the item of clothing linked Headley to the murder scene after his DNA was added to the national database in 2012 for an unrelated incident.

Duo jailed for 6 months each for helping Abby Choi's ex in Hong Kong escape bid
A yacht rental agent and a woman have been jailed for six months each for conspiring to help the ex-husband of slain model Abby Choi Tin-fung in a failed bid to flee Hong Kong after the socialite's murder two years ago. Advertisement Kowloon City Court handed down the sentences to Lam Shun, 44, and Irene Pun Hau-yin, 31, on Friday for a count of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Earlier this month, the court found the pair guilty of agreeing to arrange a boat to Macau for a person named 'Alex' to evade criminal sanctions, even though there was insufficient evidence to show they knew the suspect was Choi's former partner. Alex Kwong Kong-chi, 30, was wanted by police on suspicion of murder after Choi's remains were discovered in a Tai Po village house on February 24, 2023. She was 28.
