Antino blitzes the field in Doomben Cup stunner
Now a dual Group 1 winner, $3 favourite Antino was as impressive as his 6-½ length victory in last year's Toorak Handicap, Blake Shinn once again circling the field to score by four lengths over $8.50 chance Fawkner Park, with Kovalica ($7) just edging Militarize ($19) for third.
Relishing the typically punishing tempo set by Pride Of Jenni, who was a noted betting drifter and a spent force early in the straight after being dug up to lead, Antino backed up his 3-½ length win in the Hollidale Stakes to confirm his position as one of the top horses in Australia.
This was Tony Gollan's eighth career Group One win and third in his home state of Queensland, and 'special' was the word he felt best described the win.
'He's been the best horse I've trained for some time,' Gollan said.
'Took until last year to win the Toorak, win the Group One and from then, I think we've all just got better as a team, haven't we? We've done things better and he's gone to another level.
'What we've seen today is pretty special. It's a pretty good Doomben Cup field. He's won impressively and we can set our sights now on Melbourne in the spring.
'He's a very good horse, a world class jockey, and I've got a world class team to help me get him ready.'
Now clearly proven over 2000m, targets don't come much bigger than the race Gollan has set his sights on, suggesting the Cox Plate would be his Spring goal.
'We'll put him away now for the Cox Plate. I think his style of racing, suits a race like that, that amphitheatre there, where they can build and build and build,' Gollan said.
'I just said to Blake today, I couldn't get him any better than what he is today and when it's time to go, he'll give it to you today. He's really spot on.
'At the Gold Coast he was a little bit soft. Today, he's rock fit and that's pretty impressive. That's as good a win as I've been involved in. It means a lot to the whole team.'

Dunn deal: Trainer eyes Kempsey treble to finish season with flourish
One of NSW's top country stables is eying off a potential treble at Monday's Kempsey meeting that could kick-start a big finish to the current season. Ahead of Friday's new season feature Coffs Harbour Cup meeting, where he will likely have a big team on show, Matthew Dunn has pinpointed some very winnable races at Kempsey – especially late on the program. But he will look to strike earlier in a maiden plate over 1250m with an emerging filly by Cox Plate runner-up Castelvecchio. Torque Ti Amo caught the eye when hitting the line hard to beat all bar the winner first-up at Grafton in only her second start, more than nine months after making a solid debut. A lengthy break broken by two pairs of trials has the filly primed to make a big statement, despite drawing the outside barrier. Then one of Dunn's better chances all day arrives in a benchmark 58 handicap over 1000m. Progressive and sparingly-raced four-year-old Written Fame is well-placed to capture a fourth career win second-up, having finished close-up in a tougher class 3 at Grafton three weeks ago. And in the penultimate race – a class 1 handicap over 1250m – ultra-honest four-year-old Champonnet will be out to grab a second win from four starts this preparation since switching to the Dunn camp on the Far North Coast from Annabel Neasham's Qld training base earlier this year. It's the start of a big week of country racing, with Dunn confident he can also snatch the $150,000 Coffs Cup on Friday – a Big Dance Qualifier – with progressive five-year-old Cranky Harry.

Pinstriped on course for another memorable Memsie tilt
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. The start will be the same but Enver Jusufovic wants a longer journey with stable star Pinstriped in his latest spring campaign. Pinstriped provided Jusufovic with his greatest high in racing when he won last year's Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield after a solid second in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes a fortnight earlier. Pinstriped beat a strong field fair and square in the Memsie Stakes but Jusufovic was keen for more attempts at Group 1 level with the exciting galloper this time in. Pinstriped has scored important victories at his last two second-up appearances in the spring. 'History will show that he seems to go well in the spring at his first two runs and his form sort of tapers off a bit but I'm hoping this time in that I can get more than two decent runs,' Jusufovic said. READ: Beriman's appeal for concussion protocols to be strengthened 'He's due to win the PB Lawrence, I think, he's run second twice. 'There will be good horses in the Memsie Stakes, like there always is in Group 1 races, but it's a feather in his cap that he was able to beat the two highlight horses, Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni, and the new kid on the block Antino.' The son of Street Boss ran in last year's Makybe Diva Stakes but pulled up with a problem before unplaced runs in the Cantala Stakes and Cranbourne Cup to round out 2024. 'He should be cherry ripe for the Memsie,' Jusufovic said. 'Hopefully he'll go to the Makybe Diva after that. 'Last year, I thought I had him right but he pulled a muscle or something after that. 'I think that was the end of his campaign.' READ: Big bets review: Bookies clean up as shorties go under Pinstriped had two unplaced autumn runs but Jusufovic quickly identified a back issue as the course of irritation for the rising seven-year-old. He said he abandoned Pinstriped's autumn campaign to give him ample time to spell before his latest preparation, which has moved into the jumpout phase. 'We identified that his back was playing up and it was hurting a bit,' Jusufovic said. 'For that reason, we pulled the pin and he was able to have a really good break. 'He's come back well. He'll have a jumpout on Monday at Cranbourne but we're happy with the way he's progressing. 'His back is great at the moment.'
