Carlow schoolkids make their own radio shows for Cruinniú na nÓg
Cruinniú na nÓg 2025, Ireland's national day of free creativity for children and young people takes place on Saturday, June 7.
Muine Bheag Arts worked with students from St Brigid's NS, Muine Bheag in Carlow to develop, produce and record two radio plays, The Portal (2024) and The Curse of CountVlas (2025). Over the past two years they've led a series of hands-on workshops as part of Cruinniú na nÓg in which the students wrote the material for the plays, acted out the roles of all the characters, created foley sounds and learned how to use recording equipment.
The Portal (2024)
The Portal recounts the tale of the Murphy twins, Mince and Marmalade, along with their associate Benice, who travel through the portal in Dublin to New York on a mission to save Ireland from darkness.
The Portal will play out on RTÉjr Radio at 10am this Saturday, with a repeat at 2pm.
The Curse of Count Vlas (2025)
The Curse of Count Vlas tells the story of four 6th class friends who embark on a spooky adventure to rescue their town from a greedy property developer, Count Vlas, who has put a strange curse on Grandad Noel's farm.
The Curse of Count Vlas will play at 11am with a repeat at 3pm.

Muine Bheag Arts is an artist-run organisation based in Carlow that engages with the local context to present projects in the public realm. The programme includes exhibitions, workshops, events, residencies, publishing and radio broadcasts. The organisation adopts a collaborative, welcoming and experimental approach and aims to foster dialogue between artists, audiences, community and place.

Fans offered first look at Cillian Murphy in new Netflix film ‘Steve'
The film, which is a reimagining of the bestselling book by Max Porter, Shy, follows headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school 'amidst a world that has forsaken them' as he fights to keep the doors open while facing his own struggles. The movie will release in select cinemas and on the streaming service on October 3. Young actor Jay Lycurgo plays Shy, a troubled teen 'caught between his past and what lies ahead' while stars like Tracey Ullman, Top Boy star Simbi Ajikawo and Small Things Like These actor Emily Watson join Murphy on screen. The Netflix film is being directed by Tim Mielants, while author Max Porter has also written and executive produced the project. Murphy is also among the producers billed on the film alongside Alan Moloney and Tina Pawlik, while the music is written by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow. The Cork-born actor is also set to return for the Netflix film Peaky Blinders, the series he starred in as Tommy Shelby. An auction of original costumes from BBC TV series Peaky Blinders, including a suit worn by actor Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in the show's final scenes, has raised £19,000 (over €22,200) for charity. The 48-year-old Cork actor wore the period-style grey three-piece suit in the final episode of the sixth series. The highest price of £3,000 (€3,500) was fetched by a three-piece woollen suit, also worn by Murphy as Tommy Shelby, which comes with a label reading 'Tommy suit C'. Across six series, Peaky Blinders tackled the rise of fascism, Irish republican politics, and communist activities through the period following the First World War, along with Shelby's political ambitions. The sequel movie written by the show's creator and screenwriter Steven Knight is due for release this autumn.

Cillian Murphy returns to screens in school drama Steve
Cillian Murphy is reuniting with Small Things Like These director Tim Mielants and co-star Emily Watson for Steve, a school-based drama that is coming to select cinemas in September and Netflix on 3 October. Steve is described as "a reimagining" of Max Porter's best-selling novel Shy. The British author has written the screenplay and is also the film's executive producer. "The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve (Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy) and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them," says Netflix. "As Steve fights to protect the school's integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. "In parallel to Steve's struggles, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence." Joining Murphy, Watson, and newcomer Lycurgo in Steve are Tracey Ullman (The Tracey Ullman Show, Mrs America) and Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy) aka rapper Little Simz. Having launched their company Big Things Films with the acclaimed adaptation of Claire Keegan's bestseller Small Things Like These, Murphy and his production partner Alan Moloney are releasing Steve as their second feature. Murphy and author Porter previously collaborated on the stage adaptation of Porter's Grief is the Thing with Feathers and the short film All of This Unreal Time. "I just adore Max's writing and the thing his writing does for me, which Claire Keegan's writing does as well - and it's something I've always chased down in writing - is something that has an actual visceral effect on you, an emotional effect," the Cork actor told entertainment trade publication Deadline when Steve was first announced in February 2024. "I remember reading Foster, Claire's short story, I remember actually crying reading the book and having to put my hood up on the train to try to hide, I was so embarrassed. "And then Shy was also that book. Max gave me that book in a proof edition before he finished it, and again it just broke my heart. They're the sorts of things I love as a reader and as a performer, so I really wanted to do something with him."

Netflix reveals first image of Cillian Murphy in new film, Steve
Netflix has released the first image of Cillian Murphy in his forthcoming film, Steve. The 49-year-old Cork actor stars in the title role of a movie adapted from the novella Shy, by Max Porter. The released image shows a bearded Murphy leaning against a blackboard in a scene from the film which follows the titular headteacher at a reform school during a pivotal day in his life. Due for a limited cinema release in September, before appearing on Netflix from October 3, the impressive cast also includes Tracey Ullman and Emily Watson, as well as Simbi Ajikawo (better known as London rapper Little Simz). Murphy has had a strong association with British novelist Porter in recent years, having first appeared in a stage adaptation of his breakthrough novel Grief Is The Thing With Feathers in 2018, and also collaborating with him on short film All of This Unreal Time. Murphy first encountered the Belgian director while working on Peaky Blinders, and also enlisted him to direct the adaptation of Small Things Like These (2024). The release of the film in September ensures a busy month for Murphy and Porter as both are also involved in Cork festival Sounds From A Safe Harbour (Sept 11-14). The Oppenheimer star and his artist wife, Yvonne McGuinness, also recently revealed their plans to refurbish the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle, and turn it into an arts centre. Murphy has also been involved in the 28 Years Later trilogy of sequels with Danny Boyle, the director of 28 Days Later, the 2002 film that gave the Cork actor his international film break. While Murphy doesn't appear in the first of the trio of new films, he is expected to have a prominent role in the next instalment of the franchise, due in 2026.
