Manipur Police denies existence of Kuki group that threatened Meiteis

Manipur Police have denied the existence of 'Kuki Zo Village Volunteers Eastern Zone' group which had issued a directive threatening members of the Meitei community against entering Kuki areas during the upcoming state-level tourism event of 'Shirui Lily Festival'.
In a statement, police said, "It has come to the notice of Manipur Police that a press statement dated 11th May 2025 issued by one unknown organisation Kuki Zo Village Volunteer-Eastern Zone (KZVV-EZ), is being circulated on social media and local vernaculars. The unknown organisation has warned members of the Meitei community against entering or crossing Kuki-inhabited areas for the upcoming Shirui Festival." Following an enquiry by the district police, no such organisation has been found, it said, requesting the general public "not to believe such unfounded and baseless press note issued by the unknown organisation".
"Police will make adequate security arrangements to ensure and facilitate free movement of the public during the Shirui Festival," it said.
It also urged the public to cooperate with the police for ensuring security related to Shirui Festival.
The Shirui Festival is held in honour of the state flower Shirui Lily, which is found in the hills of Tangkhul Naga-dominated Ukhrul district. The festival is scheduled from May 20 to May 24.
Meanwhile, NSCN, in a statement, has called the directives of the Kuki group as "outrageous" and "provocative".
"NSCN shall not tolerate if KZVV EZ makes any wild attempt to disturb the streaming tourists targeting any particular community travelling to Ukhrul/Shirui village. Let this message be loud and clear that the territorial jurisdiction of the so-called Kukiland doesn't cover even an inch of Naga territory in Ukhrul," it said.
On the other hand, Kuki group 'Village Volunteers Eastern Zone' has stated that it has "no affiliation" and "no connection" with the Kuki Zo Village Volunteers Eastern Zone.
More than 250 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic conflict between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023.

Team from three Manipur groups to meet MHA officials for conflict resolution

A 19-member delegation from three Meitei-led groups in Manipur is scheduled to meet the officials in Delhi on Monday (June 30, 2025) to resolve a long-drawn ethnic conflict. These groups are the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation, and Federation of Civil Society Organisations. A member of one of these organisations said the discussion would focus on four issues: territorial integrity of Manipur, opening of two arterial highways, resettlement and rehabilitation of the internally displaced people, and security for farmers living and working on the periphery of the Imphal Valley. 'Non-Meitei members are part of the delegation,' he said. Manipur has been in turmoil since May 3, 2023, when the ethnic conflict between the non-tribal Meitei people and the tribal Kuki-Zo communities broke out. The conflict left more than 250 people dead and some 60,000 displaced. The scale of violence has come down over the past few months, but tension prevails, specifically along the 'buffer zone', a strip separating the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley from the surrounding foothills where the Kuki-Zo people are in the majority. The issue of territorial integrity refers to the demand of some Kuki-Zo groups for the creation of a 'separate administration.' The Meiteis continue to be 'barred' from using the National Highway-2 and National Highway-37, which connect the Imphal Valley to the rest of the country through areas controlled by the Kuki-Zo people. Farmers in the valley operating in their fields close to the 'buffer zone' have occasionally come under fire from armed groups in the hills. In the latest incident on June 19, a Meitei farmer was killed in the Phubala area of the Bishnupur district adjoining Churachandpur.

Manipur's Naga Groups Demand Kukis To Hand Over Accused In Attack On Vehicle

Imphal: Tangkhul Naga civil society organisations in Manipur on Friday issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Kuki tribes, demanding the handing over of those involved in an attack on a passenger vehicle in Ukhrul district. The attack happened on June 26, leaving two people injured. The Tangkhul Naga, one of the major Naga tribes, is an ethnic group primarily living in Ukhrul district of Manipur and parts of neighbouring Myanmar. The ultimatum, jointly issued by the Katho Katamnao Long and the Tangkhul Naga Valley Students' Association, came a day after a mob, suspected to be of the Kuki tribes, allegedly assaulted the driver of the vehicle and injured a woman passenger in Mongkot Chepu village. The civil society organisations demanded that the miscreants be handed over to them within 24 hours, failing which there would be "serious consequences" and no member of the Kuki tribes would be allowed to enter Ukhrul district where the Nagas are in majority. The vehicle was going to Ukhrul when it was allegedly intercepted and attacked. This was not the first instance in which Kuki tribe members settled along the stretch of Ukhrul to Imphal road have engaged in such unwarranted actions against commuters, the Naga groups said in a statement. Alleging that Kuki tribes have proved that they do not want peace, the statement said, "Ever since the May 3, 2023, incident, our efforts to live in peace and cordial harmony have been overlooked and often seen as weakness and cowardice." Manipur, where over 260 people have been killed in ethnic violence since May 2023, is under President's rule. The strife between the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes also left thousands of people homeless, forcing them to stay in relief camps.

Student bodies issue 24-hr ultimatum to Kukis over assault on taxi

Imphal: In a fresh flare-up amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, the Katho Katamnao Long (KKL) and the Tangkhul Naga Valley Students' Association (TNVSA) have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Kuki community to identify and produce those allegedly involved in a mob attack on a taxi heading to Ukhrul. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday in Mongkot Chepu village, where a woman passenger was injured after a mob assaulted the vehicle's driver and damaged the windshield. Sources said the confrontation began near Litan Bridge after two persons on a bike overtook the taxi in a reckless manner. When the driver confronted them for their dangerous driving, the bikers allegedly stopped the van and assaulted him. A mob then gathered at Mongkot Chepu and vandalised the vehicle, injuring the woman passenger. The Tangkhul student bodies condemned the incident, claiming that members of the Kuki community residing along the Imphal-Ukhrul highway (NH-202) were responsible. They also criticised the Mongkot Chepu village chief for allegedly threatening the driver and passengers, reportedly while under the influence of alcohol. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta CFD de BCP está en los titulares — y está haciendo ganar dinero a la gente. They asserted that previous appeals for peace had been ignored, and their restraint was being interpreted as weakness. In a joint statement, the KKL and TNVSA warned of "serious and unbearable consequences" if the accused are not produced within 24 hours. They threatened to block all movement of Kukis along NH-202 and bar their presence in Ukhrul district. According to the officer-in-charge of Litan police station, the incident occurred around 7:15pm on Thursday. He said both parties are currently negotiating a compromise, and no FIR has been registered as of now.
