ABOUT six years ago, fresh out of matric at Hudson Park High School in East London, a 19-year-old Sinethemba Qeshile set the country alight with a List A century against a then-Temba Bavuma-led Lions side.
That innings of 121 runs in one-day cricket was followed by a first-class knock of 99 in Gqeberha against a Knights bowling attack led by Duanne Olivier, who at the time was feared by most of the top batters in the world.
Despite earning a Proteas T20 International cap a couple of weeks after his maiden List A century, Qeshile would somehow almost vanish into the domestic cricket wilderness, like many Eastern Cape-based cricketers before him.
Despite having played some big knocks in the Four-Day Series, including a century against the Kagiso Rabada-led Lions bowling attack, Qeshile's one-day cricket returns just never met the expectations, having scored a century in the format at 19.
The inconsistency in his role while playing at the Warriors also did not help as the right-handed batter simply struggled for six consecutive years.
However, in the ongoing South Africa A tour of the West Indies, it seems that something has finally clicked for Qeshile in the limited-overs arena.
The now-26-year-old announced his arrival in St Lucia with a half-century in the first one-day game, and followed up with an innings of 126 off 106 balls (18x4, 1x6) in the second encounter as he smashed international bowlers such as Oshane Thomas all around the Daren Sammy International Cricket Ground.
Though he fell cheaply in the third and final match of the one-day series on Tuesday, Qeshile's heroics saw the visitors secure a 2-0 series victory as the second match was abandoned due to persistent rain in the second innings.
Qeshile also finished as the leading run-scorer in the series with 197 at an average of 65.66, and was followed by Cape Town-born Jason Smith with 153 at an average of 76.5 and Rivaldo Moonsamy with 149 at an average of 49.
With the bat, Marques Ackerman, Jordan Herman and Mihlali Mpongwana brought up at least one half-century in the series, playing a key role in helping the visitors win the contest.
Mpongwana, as a seam-bowling all-rounder, made his presence felt with the ball as well, taking a total of four wickets, while seamer Tshepo Moreki finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with six scalps.

Orlando Pirates pull off another major coup with the signing of Oswin Appollis

Once and always Orlando Pirates have won the race to sign Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City. Photo: BackpagePix Orlando Pirates continue to flex their muscles in the transfer market after securing the heavyweight signing of Oswin Appollis. The midfielder joins the Buccaneers from Polokwane City following constant speculation over several seasons linking him to the Soweto-based outfit. The 23-year-old joins an already impressive list of new arrivals at Pirates, which includes former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Mbule, Chippa United's Sinoxolo Kwayiba, and AmaZulu winger Tshepang Moremi. Pirates have been the busiest team during the off-season, and after finishing second to Sundowns last season — with a 13-point gap — the lack of squad depth was widely seen as the key factor that separated them from the champions. Now, with their aggressive movement in the transfer window, the Buccaneers have significantly bolstered their depth while also planning for the future. Appollis becomes the latest young talent to join the club, reflecting a shift towards building a squad that can compete next season and for years to come.

‘I still need to pinch myself that everything is real' — Corbin Bosch on his dream start to Test cricket

Corbin Bosch's record, despite a tiny sample size, is on par with the best to play Test cricket. Corbin Bosch has had a scarcely believable start to his Test career. He averages 108.5 with the bat and 19.1 with the ball, elite numbers for any cricketer. His unbeaten century and second-innings five for 43 in South Africa's 328-run victory over Zimbabwe in their first Test certainly helped that. What makes Bosch's statistics even more remarkable is that he has only played two Test matches so far, highlighting just how well the 30-year-old Durban-born all-rounder has taken to international red-ball cricket. His success at the highest level has been years in the making, having debuted in first-class cricket in 2017 for the Titans. It took three years since winning the under-19 World Cup with South Africa in 2014 before he made his professional red-ball debut, and another seven before his Test debut. Everything happened slowly for Bosch and then all at once, with the past seven months of action leading to several highlights. Among them is debuting for South Africa in One Day International and Test cricket, winning the SA20 with MI Cape Town, making his Indian Premier League debut and being part of the squad that won the World Test Championship final at Lord's. 'I was actually speaking to my mum about it the other day,' Bosch said in a press conference from Zimbabwe on Wednesday. 'I still need to pinch myself that everything is real. 'I've pretty much had a magical seven-month period. I've played some really, really good cricket. 'But I've surrounded myself with some fantastic people that have just guided me and pushed me even when times were tough. I knew that, eventually, when I got the opportunity, I was going to try and grab it with both hands. 'Fortunately for me, the rub of the green has gone my way thus far, and hopefully it may continue.' Fighting for a spot Coming in at No 8 for the Proteas against Zimbabwe, Bosch played with supreme composure as he first played second fiddle to a belligerent Lhuan-dre Pretorius before guiding the tail and notching up his first century in professional cricket. Bosch's technique is sound and he evidently has the ability to go through different gears depending on the situation in the match. And yet, 'I love my batting, but my DNA is fast bowling', the big quick said. Bosch's father is Tertius Bosch who played one Test match for South Africa, in 1992, as a fast bowler. 'It's not many that can bowl 140km/h and bat the way he does,' stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj said about Bosch at the conclusion of the first Test. Despite all of his attributes, Bosch is seemingly down the pecking order on the Test team's list of all-rounders. Wiaan Mulder, who has been made captain for South Africa's second Test against Zimbabwe following a groin injury to Maharaj, is being handed an increasing amount of responsibility, which indicates his importance to the side. The squad in Zimbabwe is also missing regular faces, including Marco Jansen who usually bats at No 8 and opens the bowling. 'I think we have a healthy competition in South Africa at the moment,' Bosch said about where he sees himself in the hierarchy. 'I said to Shuks [Conrad] in Arundel that I'm going to make his job as hard as possible, whether it's the bat and the ball. 'But we're in a fortunate position in South Africa that it's such a good and healthy competition that it forces the guys at the top to be at their game. 'I don't know where I stand in the pecking order, but it doesn't bother me. If I represent my country, I just want to give it my best. If I'm on the side, I will support the guys to the end. So to me, I don't really focus on that.' DM

Kaizer Chiefs: FIVE more players heading out of Naturena

Kaizer Chiefs have released five players. Five more look set to face the same fate. Kaizer Chiefs squad continues to rapidy change with a plethora of changes having already taken place. Amakhosi has released five players. Meanwhile, the Soweto giants have signed THREE new Chiefs players. However, this is just the beginning of the player movements at Naturena. So, another FOUR Chiefs players face probably departures. Fiacre Ntwari, Bongani Sam, George Matlou, Edson Castillo and Tebogo Potsane are all facing likely departures out of Natuena. Ntwari is set to be loaned out by Chiefs, according to KickOff. Meanwhile, Sam is set to part ways with Amakhosi having not played a single game. 'Bongani Sam has parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs, concluding a surprising tenure without making a single competitive appearance for the club. He becomes the sixth player to part company with the club in this transfer window,' the insider reported on FarPost. Finally, these THREE Chiefs midfielders are all heading out of Naturena. Matlou, Potsane and Castillo are all in the same boat. They all sit behind the likes of Yusuf Maart, Gaston Sirino, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Mduduzi Shabalala, Samkelo Zwane and Mfundo Vilakazi in the Chiefs midfield pecking order. Meaning, they will struggle for game time if they stay at Naturena. Therefore, it is in their best interest to find a club where they can play more frequently. Matlou has been linked with a departure for several transfer windows. So, this is the most likey time for Chiefs to release him. Whilst, Potsane is not a part of Nabi's future plans. Finally, Nabi is considering letting Castillo go. 'It's been said head coach Nasreddine Nabi could be open to his [Castillo's] potential exit, allowing the club to be more flexible in the market as they look to lure new foreign recruits to bolster the squad for the upcoming season, ' the report read on iDiskiTimes. Chiefs have a whole team worth of new players – these 11 new players have reportedly joined the first team. This includes TWO European-based signings, FIVE promotions and FOUR players from PSL rivals. Meanwhile, they are expected to sign these players from Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. In contrast, as mentioned, FIVE Amakhosi player departures have been confirmed. Whilst, a total of FOUR more Chiefs players are heading out of Naturena. Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
