Minister Narayana gets set to realise his promise to revive his Alma mater
Ever since he won the Nellore City Assembly constituency in the 2024 general elections and got into the State cabinet, the Minister has been focusing on reviving his Alma mater, where he not only studied, but also worked as a teacher in the past.
Mr. Narayana, who celebrated his birthday on Sunday, reiterated his resolve to get the modernisation work in progress completed at the earliest and get the school opened from the current academic year.
Chequered history
During the British regime, Sunku Narayanaswamy Chetty, headmaster of the Free Church Mission High School in Nellore, resigned owing to differences with the management and established this Hindu Anglo Vernacular School on May 3, 1875.
After he stepped down in 1878 expressing inability, erstwhile Diwan of the Venkatagiri Rajah's Estates Haji Mohammad Rahimtullah, shouldered the responsibility, bought a huge chunk of land and donated it to the school. However, the issue came back to the proverbial square one after Mr. Rahimtullah also stepped down in 1886.
V. Rajagopala Krishna Yachendra Bahadur, the 28th Raja of the Venkatagiri Samsthanam, provided a permanent corpus fund of ₹50,000, in recognition of which the school came to be known as Venkatagiri Rajah School.
As the school came under the management of the politically powerful AC Subba Reddy family, internal bickerings within the clan led to a legal tussle. The TDP government in 2018 appointed a Special Officer to run the affairs, but the school was completely closed down during the ensuing YSRCP regime in 2021.
Modernisation under way
Mr. Narayana has mobilised funds to the tune of ₹15 crore from Nagarjuna Construction Company under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for modernising the school and setting up smart boards, science labs and sports infrastructure.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Narayana said the school would offer a ray of hope for children hailing from impoverished sections of society. He also proposes to provide breakfast, lunch and snacks to the students.
The school is all set for inauguration by the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu soon.

Tirupati: Former chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Thursday alleged that Andhra Pradesh is in a "state of emergency" due to the "autocratic and undemocratic practices" of the NDA govt. Himanta Sarma On Why NIA Should Probe Case Linked To Congress Leader's Wife
Guwahati: A day after Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted at transferring an ongoing state inquiry - into 'links' between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi's wife and a Pakistan-based non-governmental organisation - to the anti-terror body National Investigation Agency, the Assam chief minister explained on Thursday why he feels a need for this. Stating that the Assam Police special investigation team (SIT) has been informed that its term will not be extended and it has to wrap up its probe into the case by September 10, Mr Sarma said, "The Assam SIT has a limited scope. We cannot access telephonic interactions beyond two years. But the National Investigation Agency (NIA) can trace conversations till 2010. The Assam SIT has done a good job, but ultimately, the case is related to citizenship. It is the Centre which has to finally take over the investigation." The chief minister had, earlier this year, ordered the registration of a case against a Pakistani national, who is believed to have links with Mr Gogoi's wife Elizabeth Colburn, for "trying to interfere in domestic matters" of the state and the country. Mr Sarma had also said that Ms Colburn will be probed over her alleged links with Pakistan and its intelligence agency ISI. Besides, he has said, she will also be investigated over her alleged participation in the Lok Sabha election campaigns despite being a "British citizen". The Assam SIT had taken over the case and questioned several people. "We will refer the case to the Centre, but not now. We have given a deadline of September 10 to the SIT to wrap up its probe. It will submit a report and I will table that report before the cabinet, which can recommend the case's transfer to NIA," he added. Mr Gogoi has denied the allegations.

Prayagraj to have manuscript library soon
Prayagraj: State govt has approved the establishment of a manuscript library and cultural complex in the city. These facilities will be housed in a new five-storey building of the regional archives. For this purpose, land in Mumfordganj has been identified. The new building will become a repository of valuable ancient knowledge and historical documents, featuring a vast manuscript library with approximately 10,000 manuscripts in various languages and on diverse subjects. These manuscripts include precious collections dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Notable among them is a 1940 record containing the land grant issued by Sher Shah Suri, royal decrees from Bajirao Peshwa, and royal charters (sanads) from Emperors Akbar, Shah Jahan, Jahangir, and Aurangzeb. The existing Regional Archives office near Medical Chowraha will be relocated soon to this new site. The library will also house documents related to the First War of Independence in 1857, including records linked to Rani Lakshmibai and Nana Saheb. Records pertaining to Begum Hazrat Mahal and Liaqat Ali will be preserved as well. The archives hold extensive British-era records from the commissionerates of Allahabad, Faizabad, Agra, Banaras, and Meerut. Documents from as early as 1790 related to Banaras and Sarnath will also be part of the collection. Besides historical documents, the library will safeguard important manuscripts on the vedas, astrology, ayurveda, logic, and Jainism. Rare palm-leaf manuscripts such as the Tulsi Ramcharitmanas and Valmiki Ramayan will be displayed alongside Persian texts like Akbarnama and Ain-i-Akbari. Other significant works include Bahadur Singh Bhatnagar's 1200-page 'Yaadgare Bahaduri' and the manuscript of 'Tareekh-e-Farishta'. The Manuscript Library will serve as valuable resource for scholars and researchers to study and deepen knowledge in multiple disciplines. The Cultural Complex will provide insight into the social and cultural identity of society, showcasing India's rich heritage. Additionally, an Archaeological Museum will be established to display artefacts. "The govt has approved the proposal for constructing a Manuscript Library in the city, the work for the same would expedite once the land is provided by the Prayagraj district administration," said Manuscript Officer (culture department), Ghulam Sarvar.
